[scene opens inside of the National Central Library, where Edward and Alphonse are looking for any evidence that might have survived the fire that decimated the First Branch building, when the male library assistant (black hair, glasses, brown sweater) puts down a box full of damaged books]
LIBRARY ASSISTANT: We've been searching since this morning, but these are the only books we were able to recover.
DENNY BROSH: This is terrible.
[Edward takes one of the burned books out of the box]
ALPHONSE: Brother ...
[a young female librarian (African American, brown hair pulled back into a bun, brown sweater) walks into the room carrying a notepad]
LIBRARIAN: Sure enough, there aren't any books authored by Tim Marcoh in the main building. If they had been moved there from the branch, there should be a record of it, after all.
EDWARD: Um, is there any possibility that it was checked out by anyone?
LIBRARIAN: Yes, but since the circulation records were also burned up ...
EDWARD: I see ...
ALPHONSE: It was probably burned up together with all the others.
EDWARD: If only we could have confirmed that his book was really even in there ... Was there anyone else that worked there?
[she looks over at the assistant]
LIBRARIAN: He and I were the only two people on staff in that branch.
EDWARD: Just you two?
LIBRARIAN: Only State Alchemists were permitted in the branch, and all.
EDWARD: I think I remember there being a young lady there who wore glasses.
LIBRARIAN: Ah, you mean Sheska? She was fired a little while back.
EDWARD: Fired?
LIBRARY ASSISTANT: That girl was a little unusual.
LIBRARIAN: Sheska was a bookworm.
EDWARD: Worm ... ?
[cut to the Elric brothers arriving at Sheska's home, as one of their bodyguards knocks on the door]
DENNY BROSH: [pause] I guess she isn't home.
EDWARD: The lights are on. Let's open it!
MARIA ROSS: You can't!
[Edward opens the door, and they see mountains of books covering every inch of the house]
EDWARD: What a mountain of books!
DENNY BROSH: Does someone actually live here?
[Edward yells inside]
EDWARD: Sheska-san, are you here? Sheska-san!
[there is no response]
EDWARD: [to himself] She's not here.
[there is suddenly a muffled cry from somewhere under a pile of books]
SHESKA: Help ... Help me!
[the group suddenly spring into action and start madly digging through the books]
ALPHONSE: There's someone ... there's someone buried here!
EDWARD: Dig! Dig! Just keep digging!
[cut to the young former librarian (brown hair, glasses, green eyes, sweatshirt and blue jeans) sitting on the floor and drinking some tea]
SHESKA: Thank you very much. I inadvertantly knocked over that pile of books. I couldn't breathe, and thought I was going to die.
EDWARD: Sheska-san, you used to work at the first branch, right?
SHESKA: Yes. All I ever did was read books while I was working, so I got fired. I have to support my sick mother, but I'm just no good at anything besides reading books--
EDWARD: Um, anyhow, Sheska-san, do you remember there being a book authored by someone named Tim Marcoh at the branch?
SHESKA: Tim Marcoh?
EDWARD: It would probably be a thick, handwritten research journal.
SHESKA: A thick, handwritten research journal ... by Tim Marcoh ... Ah yes, I remember! It was a leather-bound book, with handwritten manuscripts inside!
[a look of surprise comes over Edward's face]
EDWARD: Are you sure about that?
SHESKA: Yes, I remember all of the books in the branch's collection!
EDWARD: Which would mean, sure enough ... Damn. We're right back where we started.
ALPHONSE: Brother ...
SHESKA: Yes, indeed. It sure is sad when you can't find a book you want to read ... I know that feeling terribly well.
[Sheska has a flashback to searching through the books in her home]
SHESKA: I too once wandered among this mountain of books, for nearly three days, but still did not find the one volume I wanted to read.
[the flashback ends]
SHESKA: It's so sad, so sad ...
[she starts to cry]
EDWARD: Sh-Sheska-san, thanks. With your help, we at least confirmed that the book existed. We'll manage to do something from here on.
DENNY BROSH: You mean, there's still some other way?
[cut to everyone standing in front of the charred remains of the First Branch]
EDWARD: I'm going to take the cinders of all the books that were burned, and transmute them back to their original form!
DENNY BROSH: Incredible! Can you really do something like that?
EDWARD: Watch closely!
[a sudden gust of wind blows some of the ashes away, as the male bodyguard points in the direction of where the ashes flew off]
DENNY BROSH: Uh, what about that? Is it okay for that stuff to go flying off?
[Edward drops to his knees in defeat]
ALPHONSE: No matter how hard you try, it'll be impossible, brother.
SHESKA: Um, if you'd like, shall I reproduce the book for you?
[they look at her in surprise]
SHESKA: I remember the entire contents of a book, once I read it. And since I've read most of the books in the branch--
[Edward excitedly jumps up to his feet]
EDWARD: You mean it? Can you really do that?!
SHESKA: It's a silly little talent I have, but if I can help you out--
["Three days later ... " appears on screen, then cut to Sheska arranging several piles of paper on a table in her house]
SHESKA: Here you go! There was a lot of content, so it took me three whole days to write it all down!
EDWARD: This is Marcoh-san's research journal? Really?
SHESKA: Yes! Everything from light and easy hors d'oeuvres, to party dinners you'd invite guests to ... Tim Marcoh's "One Thousand Recipes for Today's Menus!"
[everyone gives her a confused look, but she remains upbeat]
SHESKA: Right?
[cut to Maria reading from one of the pages]
MARIA ROSS: "One tablespoon of sugar, a pinch of salt and pepper" ... This really is today's menu.
[Denny leans in close to Sheska]
DENNY BROSH: [whispering] Are you sure you didn't get the wrong author?
SHESKA: You're not serious! All I did was reproduce what I was told!
MARIA ROSS: It was all in vain, I'm sorry to say ...
[Edward reads through another pile of papers]
EDWARD: No ... you're sure that, word for word, this is the same thing that Marcoh-san wrote?
SHESKA: Yes, no doubt about it!
EDWARD: You're incredible! Thanks ...
[he looks up from the papers]
EDWARD: Lieutenant Ross! Give Sheska this amount of money for me!
[he hands her some papers, then opens the door]
EDWARD: If you go to State Alchemist Services with my references there, they'll take it out of my research budget for you! Al, let's go!
[the Elric brothers leave]
MARIA ROSS: Hold on .. Sargeant, here!
[she hands Denny the papers, then runs off after them, as he turns to Sheska]
DENNY BROSH: What is he planning to do with a book like that?
SHESKA: Indeed ...
[they both look at the amount of money written on the piece of paper, and blurt out "That much?!"]
DENNY BROSH: For him to pay out this amount all at once, he sure is a State Alchemist!

Full Metal Alchemist: Episode 18: Marcoh's Notes (2003 series)

On the night before Edward, Alphonse, and Major Armstrong return to Central City from Resembool, Lust is searching the National Central Library for Dr. Marcoh's research notes. Watching in secret, Scar notices her resemblance to his brother's fiancee just as she notices him with Gluttony moving in behind Scar. Lust makes it clear that she can't have Scar interfere with the Elric's quest, and signals Gluttony to attack forcing Scar to fight him off with his destructive alchemy.

The next day the Elrics and Armstrong leave the train station greeted by Armstrong's subordinates Maria Ross and Denny Brosh to relieve Armstrong of his duty to protect the Elrics while he reports to Central Command, though they mistake Al as the Fullmetal Alchemist. Despite not wanting the bodyguards, Ed learns that it is due to Scar back in Central again. Just as the Elrics leave, Ross mentions the information to Armstrong that the Elrics quickly find out that the Library has burnt down. At Central Command, after he annoys Roy Mustang over the phone about Elicia, Maes Hughes confirms that Scar was involved with the Library's destruction due to eyewitnesses and his blood stained clothes found right by the river, but suspects there were other people involved due to the evidence pointing to signs of a struggle. Hughes also mentions that with Basque Grand dead, Roy has a good chance of being transferred back to Central Command, warning him of dealing with potential enemies as well as gathering as many supporters as he can. Going to another library, Ed discovered few books survived the fire with nothing that can help him, and the head librarian can't find anything by Tim Marcoh in their records. When the head librarian mentions that she and the worker with her were the only ones on staff at the National Central Library, Ed recalls that another girl worked there when he visited three years ago. Recognizing this person as Sheska, the head librarian mentions she was fired not too long ago, and was a bookworm.

Arriving at Sheska's house, the group finds a mountain load of books and Sheska buried underneath them, forcing the four of them to dig her out. Sheska is able to confirm Marcoh's material was in the library but with it destroyed, Ed is back to square one and tries to rebuild the entire library and books from alchemy, but a windstorm ruins the plan scattering the ruined book pages. Sheska reveals she can reproduce the material thanks to her photographic memory taking three days to reproduce Marcoh's large research material. Ed leaves Ross and Brosh to pay off Sheska while he returns to Central Library to look over the material.

Despite it looking like a cookbook, Ed believes it to be encoded to avoid for the material to fall in the wrong hands. Spending a large amount of time working on the decoding, the Elrics are visited by Hughes. While talking about the security measures on dealing with Scar, once Hughes mentions the difficulties he is having due to numerous court files stored at the National Central Library destroyed, Ed recommends Sheska to him to reproduce the files. Sheska agrees with this due to Al's encouragement. Hughes leaves promising additional security the following day addressing Maria Ross's concerns by privately stating their job is to watch over the Elrics as they uncover something only they can do.

While in a coma, Scar recalls his encounter with Lust and Gluttony. After failing to destroy Gluttony with his destructive alchemy, suffering a chest injury, Scar blew off Gluttony's hand to break free and dodged Lust's attack. Recognizing them as Homunculus, Scar watches as the candles dropped by Lust start a fire and he uses his alchemy in a large attack to escape. Scar wakes up in an Ishvalan Refugee Camp and greeted by a boy named Rick who recognizes him as an Ishvalan. Rick takes Scar to his grandfather who recognizes him from the wanted posters, pointing out they would never sell out a fellow Ishvalan and reveals there are other Refugee camps scattered throughout the land. As the days go by, waiting for Ed to finish his research, Maria Ross overhears Ed as he finished the research and horrifically discovered the truth about the Philosopher's Store requiring the sacrifice of live human beings for it to be made. Scar is ready to leave the camp since he felt no reason to stay for betraying the way of God and Rick is admiring Scar's tattoo. Scar says he got it from his brother as a gift.

From wikipedia.org:

The Fullmetal Alchemist anime and manga series feature an extensive cast of fictional characters created by Hiromu Arakawa. The story is set in a fictional universe within the 20th Century in which alchemy is one of the most advanced scientific techniques known to man. Although the story in the first anime and the manga basically start the same, the first anime, midway through its run, begins to differ greatly from the manga; characters that are killed early on in the manga survive to the end of the first anime and vice versa. The second anime's (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood) events, however, follow the ones from the manga.

The story follows the adventures of two alchemist brothers named Edward and Alphonse Elric. While trying to revive their mother, the brothers lost parts of their bodies, with Alphonse's soul being contained in a suit of armor, and Edward replacing his right arm and left leg with two sets of automail, a type of advanced prosthetic limb. Advised by Roy Mustang, an alchemist from the State Military, Edward becomes a State Alchemist, and starts traveling with Alphonse through the country of Amestris in order to find a way to recover their bodies. In their search, they hear of the Philosopher's Stone, a powerful alchemy artifact that the brothers can use to recover their bodies. However, after becoming a State Alchemist, Edward discovers that several members of the military are also attempting to get the stone, most notably humanoid creatures known as homunculi, who start chasing the Elric brothers.

Sheska (Japanese "Shesuka")

Sheska (also spelled "Scieszka") is a mousy, bespectacled young woman who had previously worked as a librarian at the First Branch of the National Central Library in Central City. Because she spent all day reading the many documents stored there, instead of doing her job, she was fired.

She has a photographic memory and can remember and reproduce anything she has ever read, with word-for-word accuracy. Because of this, after the library burns down, the Elric brothers seek her out to see if she can remember any research papers by Tim Marcoh. She transcribes the entirety of his research for them, earning enough pay to last her a year for her troubles.

When Maes Hughes learns of how she helped the Elrics, he hires her to help recreate the criminal records that were destroyed in the fire.

In the first anime, after Hughes' death, Sheska helps Winry Rockbell discover the identity of Sloth.

Naomi Wakabayashi voices her in the first anime, and Gwendolyn Lau in the English dub. Her voice in the second series is provided by Chika Fujimura.
