[scene opens with Billy and Nick sitting at a computer in the public library, as a young female librarian (long brown hair, glasses, green blouse) is helping a little girl in the background]
NICK: So we're meeting our interviewer in here?
BILLY: No, not in here. We're meeting him in here.
[he points at the computer screen]
BILLY: It's a Hangout. This is how people do it now, Nicky. They have their interviews on the Internet.
NICK: Ohhh, I like it.
[he picks up some papers]
NICK: Now, it says here that the internship is only for college students, so--
BILLY: Guess who's way ahead of you. That's why I enrolled us at the University of Phoenix. That proud online institution. Go Fighting Phoenixes!
NICK: Nice ...
[he looks at the paper more closely]
NICK: Wait, you put my major down as physics? Wh-why would you put my major down as ... I don't know shit about physics.
BILLY: Look--
NICK: Physics scares me.
BILLY: These guys paint the corner of the plate with their pitches. They're not gonna come straight down the middle and ask you about physics. It's too obvious. I took it off the table.
NICK: Good. Hide in plain sight.
BILLY: Yes.
[he looks at the paper again]
NICK: But you put down ... sales? As your major?
BILLY: [pause] Well, 'cause I'm a talker. I figure I should probably dazzle. I want you to ... You know, I've thought about this. I just figure, like, hide your vacancy and let me dazzle.
NICK: Okay, dazzle.
[a little girl walks up to them]
GIRL 1: Are you done yet? There's a fifteen-minute limit.
BILLY: I'm sorry, you know what? The big boys are gonna need the computer a little longer, but maybe we can make this a win-win for you.
[he takes a dollar bill out of his pocket]
BILLY: Get yourself a soda pop.
NICK: Give her some money, yeah.
BILLY: Here you go.
[he hands her the bill]
BILLY: Yeah, just go put some sugar in your body. Enjoy it.
[she takes the money and leaves]
BILLY: What a cute kid.
NICK: I know a child who--
[a young man and woman appear in the Google Hangout window]
BILLY: Okay, here they are.
[cut to a shot of the two Google employees' POV, as Billy and Nick cluelessly stare at their computer screen]
BILLY: And when I hit this, they'll be able to see us.
NICK: Yeah, sit up straight.
BILLY: So come on in, get in there close so we can be seen on the webcam. See how small the webcam is?
NICK: They can see us.
BILLY: No, get cheek to cheek. Nick, come here, cheek to cheek.
[they put their faces uncomfortably close together (still oblivious to the fact that the Google employees can see and hear everything)]
NICK: Okay, but don't crowd me. You're crowding me right now.
BILLY: Nick, get cheek to cheek.
NICK: Will you get your cheek--
BILLY: Buddy, they can't see us.
NICK: I understand that. Here we go.
BILLY: Go cheek to cheek. Just go like I tell you.
NICK: Okay. Don't yell in my--
BILLY: Put your fucking cheek next to mine.
NICK: Yes, yes, I get it.
[cut to the two Google employees]
BENJAMIN: We can see you guys.
[cut back to Billy and Nick, as they both freeze for a second before yelling at the computer screen]
BILLY: Okay, great!
NICK: Good, ya got us?!
BILLY: Hi, my name is Billy!
[cut back to the two Google employees]
ALISON: Uh, we can hear you fine as well.
[cut back to Billy and Nick, as they lower their voices]
BILLY: Oh, great. Uh--
NICK: Good.
BILLY: Billy McMahon.
NICK: Nick Campbell.
[cut back to the two Google employees]
BENJAMIN: I'm Benjamin.
ALISON: Alison.
[cut back to Billy and Nick, as the little girl returns with some friends]
GIRL 2: We're thirsty, too.
BILLY: Okay, slow it down there, camper. I'm not an ATM. I got a job interview here, thank you.
GIRL 2: We'll be back.
[they leave]
BILLY: Okay, easy.
[cut back to the two Google employees, with confused looks on their faces]
BENJAMIN: Are you in a library?
[cut back to Billy and Nick]
BILLY: You know, we're in a program here called--
NICK: We are. There's some beautiful little kids here.
BILLY: Yeah, kids.
NICK: Helping kids program ...
BILLY: One of the things we're involved in, where we take suburban kids and we teach them what it's like to be homeless.
[cut back to the two Google employees]
ALISON: Oh, what's it called?
[cut back to Billy and Nick]
NICK: Oh, it-it's called, uh ...
BILLY: Attitude Adjustment.
NICK: Attitude Adjustment.
BILLY: And that's where we are today. We're helping the kids. And-and to be honest with you, we did the interview here because we wanted to help out, and also we don't have webcams for our computer.
[cut back to the two Google employees]
BENJAMIN: If you don't have a webcam on your computer, what type of computer do you use for your coding ability?
[cut back to Billy and Nick]
BILLY: Coding ability?
[cut back to the two Google employees]
BENJAMIN: Uh, yeah.
[he looks down at a piece of paper]
BENJAMIN: Under computer skills, you put "C-plus-plus."
[cut back to Billy and Nick]
BILLY: [pause] That's actually a C-plus.
[cut back to the two Google employees]
BENJAMIN: What's that?
[cut back to Billy and Nick]
BILLY: Well, the second "plus" is to reflect my attitude of how I felt about the C-plus ... But it's a C-plus. It was a typing class. You know, same principle, just not the engine inside the baby there.
[he moves his hands as if typing on a keyboard]
BILLY: But it was more like ... "quick brown fox!" You know, put your hands in the basin, and crushing it like that. But that h-helped me out a lot when I, as I started my journey into computers because I already knew where to put my hands, clearly.
[cut back to the two Google employees]
ALISON: Okay, if we could focus on this now ... You are currently enrolled at the University of Phoenix online?
[cut back to Billy and Nick]
NICK: Indeed, yes, we are.
BILLY: Damn right we are.
NICK: Damn right we are.
BILLY: It's, uh, the oldest institution of its kind, and as such, many people refer to it as the Harvard of Internet colleges.
[cut back to the two Google employees]
ALISON: Oh ... I hadn't heard that actually.
BENJAMIN: I ... No, th-that has not made it out here, that reputation.
[cut back to Billy and Nick]
BILLY: Well, we're Phoenix proud.
NICK: We're Phoenix proud.
[cut back to the two Google employees]
ALISON: Well, that's fine. Um, we're gonna ask you a few questions that some of our candidates find a little bit odd.
[cut back to Billy and Nick]
NICK: Let's get weird!
BILLY: No judgment. Shoot.
[cut back to the two Google employees]
BENJAMIN: You're shrunken down to the size of nickels, and dropped to the bottom of a blender. What do you do?
[cut back to Billy and Nick]
BILLY: I ... Is there anything else in the blender?
[cut back to the two Google employees]
BENJAMIN: Uh, I don't know.
[cut back to Billy and Nick]
BILLY: Well, that's gonna make a difference. Are there ice cubes to climb on? Are we working with a daiquiri here? Are we throwing a little rum in? Are we making a smoothie?
NICK: It's been a long week. Maybe we want to let these little guys live a little.
[cut back to the two Google employees]
BENJAMIN: Okay, for the sake of the argument, let's say it's empty.
[cut back to Billy and Nick]
NICK: Sure.
BILLY: Well, in that case, it's easy, then.
[cut back to the two Google employees]
ALISON: Why?
BENJAMIN: I'm sorry?
[cut back to Billy and Nick]
BILLY: If we're shrunk down to the size of a nickel and there's no liquid in the blender, we go ahead and put it on our backs.
[they both lean back in their chairs]
BILLY: So you take her flat on your back like this.
NICK: Right, right, right. You just lay back, enjoy that breeze.
BILLY: Lay stiff as a board, light as a feather.
NICK: Pretend it's a fan.
[cut back to the two Google employees, as he waves his arms to stop them]
BENJAMIN: Okay, once is--
[cut back to Billy and Nick]
BILLY: And let those blades just whip all around you like this!
[he spins his head around and makes whirring noises, as Nick leans in close and whispers to him with a smile on his face]
NICK: [whispers] Dazzle, dazzle!
[Billy stops and leans in close to the webcam with a smile on his face]
BILLY: It's like getting an MRI!
[cut back to the two Google employees]
BENJAMIN: Once this blender's on, it's on forever.
ALISON: It's on. Forever.
[cut back to Billy and Nick]
NICK: Respectfully, I gotta disagree. We sold blenders, and even the best model in the world is only gonna run nonstop for ... what, Billy?
BILLY: Even the Germans, the Germans could never--
NICK: Yeah. Even the German model. Even one of those Braun ones, they're only gonna run nonstop maybe ten or eleven hours. So we're getting out, and when we do, we're better off for it, because whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger.
BILLY: But let's just go ahead and big-picture this for a second, if I can. Just like the founders of Google. Big-picture Googling ... It's not so much getting out of the blender. It's what happens next. That's the question.
NICK: You've got two nickel-sized men free in the world. Think of the possibilities.
BILLY: I mean, I ... Off the top of my head, and I'm just spitballing here--
NICK: My head's swimming!
BILLY: Sunglass repair?
NICK: Yeah yeah, we could use the little--
BILLY: We'd be hell on those little screws!
NICK: Or maybe you stick us in those submarines that they put in people's bodies to fight diseases?
BILLY: That's cutting-edge right there!
[cut back to the two Google employees]
BENJAMIN: Okay, you ... That-That's not a real thing, the submarines.
ALISON: No.
[cut back to Billy and Nick]
BILLY: Wait a minute. I thought we were stuck in a blender. Now we're saving lives?
[he leans in really close to the webcam]
BILLY: What?!
[cut back to the two Google employees]
BENJAMIN: What?
ALISON: Uh, what?
[cut back to Billy and Nick, who now both lean in close to the webcam]
BILLY: What?!
NICK: What?
[cut back to the two Google employees, who look even more confused (and possibly annoyed)]
BENJAMIN: What?
ALISON: What?
[cut back to Billy and Nick]
BILLY: Lemmee just recap this for you real quick. We started off in a blend--
NICK: Yeah?
BILLY: Now we're saving lives ... What?!
NICK: What?!
[cut back to the two Google employees]
BENJAMIN: What? Uh--
[she turns to him with an exasperated look on her face]
ALISON: What?
BENJAMIN: Uh ...
[cut back to Billy and Nick]
BILLY: Wait a minute! We were stuck in a blender ...
NICK: What a journey!
BILLY: And now we saving lives?! What?!
NICK: You guys led us to this, thank you!
[cut back to the two Google employees]
BENJAMIN: I think we've gotten a little far afield.
ALISON: Just a little off topic.
[cut back to Billy and Nick]
NICK: Ally, I'll get inside you and I'll fight for you.
[cut back to the two Google employees]
ALISON: Uh, thank you. I ... I appreciate that, but--
[she looks down at some papers]
ALISON: Which one of you ... which one of you is physics?
[cut back to Billy and Nick (who suddenly gets a concerned look on his face), then back to the two Google employees]
BENJAMIN: Mister Campbell? You could maybe expound on this from a physics aspect?
[cut back to Billy and Nick]
NICK: Physics. Here, here ...
[he struggles to come up with something]
NICK: Listen, the ... I, I could bend your ear about physics and various physical phenomenon, but the truth is we were in a blender. We lost our jobs, we'd given up. So I think we already answered the question when we took this interview.
BILLY: We got ourselves out, and here we are. If you guys really want to know what happens when you take two guys out of a blender ... I'm sorry, Allison, is it?
ALISON: [from off camera] Yes.
BILLY: Then give us a shot. And I think you'll be happy that you did.

The Internship (2013)

In one of the early scenes in "The Internship," heroes Billy and Nick (Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson) have a video-conference interview with two recruiters from Google at a computer in a public library. Billy and Nick are two forty-something wristwatch salesmen who lost their jobs when their company folded (nobody uses watches anymore). Both men are now adrift in a world that has passed them by. After a long night of sadly Googling the "jobs for people with no skills", Vaughn's Billy stumbles upon Google's competitive internship program and signs up himself and his buddy Nick for an interview. Batting away the children who want to get on the public computer, Billy and Nick shout at top-volume into the screen, despite the fact that they are told by the recruiters, "Guys, we can hear you". Billy and Nick jam their heads close together like an old vaudeville team posing for a manic promotional photograph and jabber right into the camera, exuding not only obvious technical incompetence but blatantly embarrassing need.

Both men seem to be on the verge of mental collapse. They're Willy Lomans on speed. It's excruciating to watch. And hilarious.

Directed by Shawn Levy and written by Vince Vaughn and Jared Stern, "The Internship" stuffs some creaky gear-shifts and boring exposition in its first 15 minutes; even Will Ferrell's one scene falls a little flat. But the Google interview is the moment the film explodes. The energy is uproarious.

'The Internship': Google movie searches for laughs

It's not a terrible idea for a movie: Two 40-something guys (Vince Vaughn, Owen Wilson), who've just lost their jobs as watch salesmen ("Watches are obsolete, and so are you," says their boss), talk their way into an internship at Google. But Shawn Levy's "The Internship" gets lost somewhere along the way in a sea of "Flashdance" references and warm-and fuzzy high-tech high jinks; this movie isn't so much Google as goo.

Billy (Vaughn) and Nick (Wilson), after verbally tap-dancing their way through an online interview at a public library (it's the movie's funniest scene, with Wilson goofily riffing on "nickel-sized men"), show up at Google's California campus, stunned by the palatial grounds, the high-tech quirks, the free food - and how very much younger nearly everybody else is. As interns, they begin a series of challenges (a "mental Hunger Games" as Nick calls it), designed to win full-time jobs for the ultimate victors. Along the way, they make friends, find love interests and learn that Google is the very best place to work in the entire world.
