Case Study No. 1182: Staff of the Great Library of Bismark

Let's Play Off - Part 11: Electric blue library
14:59
This zone sure has some bright tasteless colors.

By the way, when I saw the Bismark book I said Prussian, not Russian, okay?

Okay.

[the player enters Zone 2 and walks up to the Great Library of Bismark, where some graffiti can be seen on the exterior wall]
THE BATTER: There's an arrow painted on the wall.
[the player enters the library, where a male librarian is speaking to another male librarian behind the front desk]
LIBRARIAN 1: Yes. You shouldn't lend any more books to that man. He tears out the pages. It's almost dangerous.
LIBRARIAN 2: Yes.
LIBRARIAN 1: I'm going back upstairs.
[the first librarian heads upstairs, and the player walks up to the second librarian (who, like all Elsen, has a square white head with nothing but two black eyes and a mouth, as well as a shirt and tie)]
LIBRARIAN 2: Hello. Welcome to the library. Uh ... I should point out that the upper floors are inaccessible because of the spectres.
THE BATTER: There are specters in this building?
LIBRARIAN 2: Uhh ... Y-Yes. Why do you ask?
THE BATTER: I will eliminate them.
LIBRARIAN 2: El-eliminate the spectres? But ... uh ... uh ... You know, uh, you ... you could get hurt ... and uh ... there's nothing for you up there. Just walls, shelves, stairs, and an old cat.
THE BATTER: A cat? I'll purify the upper floors.
LIBRARIAN 2: Ah ... Um ... good ... Okay. Don't be too loud, then. And the fourth floor is not really accessible ... People have torn pages out of the books. So I don't want to go up there. It could be dangerous.
[the player talks to the librarian again]
LIBRARIAN 2: The fourth floor is inaccessible. I don't want to endanger the books. There's already someone who rips out the pages, and more so if chaos ensued ... Someone could blame me. And if you go on upstairs, don't be too loud ... If you please.
[the player talks to a male patron standing near the stairs]
PATRON 1: I'm doing nothing wrong ... I'm just looking at the wall.
[the player enters the backroom of the library and looks at a bookshelf]
THE BATTER: These shelves are fake.
[the player walks up to another male patron]
PATRON 2: It's not easy to navigate around here ... Everything looks the same.
[the player walks up to another male patron]
PATRON 3: This ... is a great building.
[the player returns to the entrance, then climbs up to the second floor and speaks to the other male librarian]
LIBRARIAN 1: Don't turn the pages ... It makes too much noise ... O-Okay?
[the player checks one of the bookshelves]
THE BATTER: This book is entitled "Explanations." Read?
[the player selects "Yes", then cut to a "scan" of the book's contents]

A long time ago, lived an evil king. His face was so repulsive that he was nicknamed the Toad King. One day, a masked man met the King during an audience. He said the following words to him: "Greeting wretched monarch, leave this land at once or perish at the tip of my blade."

The King replied: "I am the king and you are my subjects. You are not to go against my will." And so the Masked Man slew the King with his mighty sword.

THE BATTER: I put every page back in their place. The books are fine, now.
LIBRARIAN 2: Ah ... ha! That ... That's very good. I ... I'll let you up then. That ... That's great. The fourth floor's now accessible ... for you and you only.
[the player heads up to the fourth floor (whose entrance is no longer blocked), where a small white cat appears]
JAPHET: Who ... Who are you? What is that in your hand?
THE BATTER: You're not the Judge.
JAPHET: The ... the Judge? No. No, I am not. My name is Japhet. I am the creator of this city. I am also the leader of the phantoms, my royal instruments of vengeance.
THE BATTER: You're the chief of the specters?
JAPHET: Specifically, they are my arms, sent to me by the Queen to restore justice to this zone. You must have been very determined to come up here. I recognize in you a certain courage, an exceptional trait for a place such as this. But I will not leave the guilty unpunished. So, you shall be the first to succumb to the ectoplasmic blasts of my army!
[the cat attacks]
JAPHET: I do not need any spectres to eliminate you yet, you sport pajama-wearing clown. I will finally get a taste of justice!
[the player attacks]
JAPHET: Your arms ... they are as valiant as your spirit. I must admit that I may have underestimated you. Unfortunately for you, I would discard all manners as a gentleman when necessary. Especially for a new enemy ... Spectres, come to me! Dance together and echo the song of the righteous! The torment of men heals my wounds. Your body will feed the intangible spirits for eternity.
[nothing happens]
JAPHET: [pause] Phantoms? Phantoms, come to me! I command you!
[nothing happens]
JAPHET: Curses! By what magic, baleful human, do you manage to keep my ectoplasmic acolytes from joining me? No matter! You will taste my wrath!
[the player is able to defeat Japhet]
JAPHET: Hhh ... hhh ... hhh ... Poor fool! It is not yet time for me to reveal my true nature. But know that you will win nothing by waiting, obnoxious buffoon.
[the cat disappears, leaving a white ring which the player picks up]
NARRATOR: Add-On Omega has joined you.
[the player tries to climb up the stairs]
THE BATTER: This barrier prevents me from going upstairs. It's impossible to climb any higher at this point.
[the player returns to the librarian at the front desk]
LIBRARIAN 2: H-How are you? You didn't get hurt up there? Well, anyways ... I saw a cat ... I expect it to be by the south entrance ...
[the player exits the library, then speaks to another cat sitting underneath the arrow painted on the library's exterior wall]
JUDGE: Greetings, dear immaculate comrade. Has your journey not taken you to a place of optimum conditions? This is a drier area compared to previous surroundings. I must admit that I for one am delighted. The feline gent is not very fond of rain. I have heard from an old friend that the shopping mall in the northern part of the city is succumbing to ectoplasmic assaults ... Perhaps it would be a good idea for you to hurry on over there and inform the locals of your purifying light.

From starmen.net:

Hello! Posting on behalf of Mortis Ghost and his game team "Unproductive Fun Time", I present you the creepy-weird, RPGmaker 2003-created game "OFF"!

Originally in French with only few English resources, a part of the Reconstructed Game Team (including myself) have spent their summer break translating this gem to English to make it available to a wider public.

In "OFF" you take control of a mysterious person called "The Batter", who is described to be on an important mission. The Batter, and yourself as his controller, are dropped off in zone 0, the first of 4 zones in a perplexing, unknown world about which you slowly find out more and more in the process of the game.

"OFF" has been praised and known as an insider's tip between French gamers for its strong story, great characters and incredible atmosphere. Though we had to fix a few bugs in it so that the latter works on every Windows computer (the required system to play this game), I strongly agree to these opinions.

---

From tvtropes.org:

OFF is an RPG created in 2007 by Mortis Ghost, with music created by Alias Conrad Coldwood. Originally released in French, it has since received an English translation. The player enters his/her name and is informed that s/he is now in control of "The Batter," a quiet man in a baseball uniform and the game's main character.

Fairly simple, huh? Well, it gets weirder.

The game takes place in a world nothing like what you know. The Batter encounters, only a few moments after you gained control, a white, wise and snarky cat with a Cheshire Cat Grin that calls himself "The Judge." The people in this world - called Elsens, though otherwise human - are practically all Inexplicably Identical Individuals other than the items merchant Zacharie, who has perfected Breaking the Fourth Wall (not that the other characters are any better; the player is repeatedly addressed personally). Strange creatures called Spectres are terrorizing everything in sight and mighty Guardians rule over the lands of the world, called Zones.

The Batter's mission is to "purify the world" from these Spectres, and you have to help him with it.

From jayisgames.com:

If you're looking for a free indie RPG that's a little... different... you might want to try Unproductive Fun Time's surreal and unsettling OFF. Recently translated from its native French, the game follows you and The Batter, a stoic slugger whose goal is, he says, to "purify" the land of spectres and phantoms. With the help of an enigmatic and somewhat suspicious toothy cat, you'll travel through the Nothingness to such wondrous places as the Meat Fountains of Alma, to the labyrinthine library of Bismark and beyond, and pack you full of ghosts, profanity, puzzles, and nightmare fuel in the process.

Use the [arrow] keys to move around, the [spacebar] to interact, and hit [ESC] to open the menu. Battles are turn based in the most traditional fashion, with characters attacking in turn once their action bar fills up. If you don't feel like manually handling each battle yourself, you can just select the "Auto" option and your heroes will beat on their enemies as they see fit. As you level up, your characters will learn more moves ("Competence") that can help in battle, and, of course, you can find the obligatory, if somewhat disdainful, item merchant who will sell you not only more curative items, but better arms and armor to boot. You can find floating boxes that will restore your health and save your progress, but only the red ones will allow you to teleport to another Zone by returning to the Nothingness.

[...]

At the starting area of zone 2 is a red cube where you can save your game.

From there, move up twice to the south side of the Library, then move left to the west side.

Go down the bottom path of the west side to reach the shore.

Talk to the man standing alone on the right.

Pay him 100 Credits to receive Page 33 in your inventory. If you check this page in your inventory, it's the 8 of Hearts.

Move right to return to the west side of the library, then go through the open door to enter the library.

Go all the way down and through the door at the bottom to reach the reception area.

Talk to the man standing behind the desk to gain access to the upper levels of the library.

Climb up either stairway to reach the second floor.

Around this area you can speak to the two men in the room and read some of the books in the bookcases.

Most the bookcases are false, but the bookcases are indicated by a light colored section of the floor in front of it.

Read the book in the left bookcase at the upper right corner of the room.

Inside the book is an image of all the cardinal directions and their corresponding arrows, identical to the symbols on the walls outside of the library.

Remember these symbols if you're ever confused while traveling around the Outer Area.

Go up the stairs to the Third Floor.

Go to the upper right room.

Inspect Page 33 (the page you purchased at the Outer Area) in your objects list.

Note that the pattern on the blotted page looks just like a playing card, specifically the 8 of hearts.

If you read the book in the bookcase at the upper right corner of the room, you'll see the page of the book is a 7 of hearts.

Insert Page 33 - 8 of Hearts from your inventory into the book.

Loot the chest at the lower right corner of the same room.

Move to the upper left room.

Take Page 33 - Queen of Spades in the middle of the wall to the left of the blocked doorway.

Go to the lower right room.

Read the book in the bookcase on the left side to view the left page with an ace of spades pattern.

Insert Page 33 - Queen of Spades into the book.

Take Page 33 - 3 of Clubs from the wall at the upper left corner of the room.

Go to the upper left room.

Read the book in the bookcase at the upper right corner of the room to view the left page with a 2 of clubs pattern.

Insert Page 33 - 3 of Clubs into the book.

Take Page 33 - 5 of Diamonds from the space in the wall between the two middle bookcases

Go to the lower left room.

Loot the chest in the middle of the top section of the room.

Read the book in the bookcase at the lower left side of the room to view the left page with a 4 of diamonds pattern.

Insert the 5 of Diamonds into the book.

Go back down to the First Floor.

Speak with the man at the desk to let him know that all the pages are in order.

In return, he will give you access to the fourth floor.

Return to the Third Floor, then continue up through the door to reach the Fourth Floor.

At the middle of the stairs you can use the yellow cube to heal your party and save the game.

Continue up the stairs to reach the first room.

Speak with Japhet to engage him in combat.

After his defeat, pick up the white circle in the middle of the room for Add-On Omega to join your party.

Exit the Library to go back to the Outer Area.

From wikia.com:

Zone 2 is a residential zone, overseen by Japhet. It is known by the alternate names "Bismark" and "The Pink Fortress" due to its bold magenta color. A circular path surrounds it and branches off into the amusement park, residental area, and shopping mall.

At the center of zone 2 is the library, a very large building containing real books, fake books, and specters. The Elsen inhabiting the zone have grown discontent and paranoid, and many of the shelves are full of books that cannot be torn or damaged, but in the upper floors the Batter can find books that are still able to be read, and a puzzle where he must replace several missing pages. One page is held by an Elsen standing near the entrance to the park, who will give it to the batter in exchange for 100 credits. Japhet is initially met in this building once the puzzle is completed, and later is fought on the roof. Omega is found here.

---

From wikia.com:

Japhet is a firebird who is the Guardian of the second Zone.

Role in the game
He is first introduced as a small cat, bearing a striking resemblance to The Judge. In reality, he is a songbird who can assume the form of a giant phoenix. He possesed the body of The Judge's brother Valerie after the latter attempted to eat him. Japhet is frequently alluded to within the books of the Library in the second Zone as a glorious king of his people, the Elsen. Unfortunately, he became resentful after his subjects became fearful and paranoid. Japhet decided to take revenge on the Elsen by summoning Spectres against them, although it is unclear whether he actually controls the spirits or whether this is only a delusion of his. After the Batter makes his way to the roof of the library, he purifies Japhet, with the audience of The Judge.

The story of Japhet
In the upper levels of the Library, the Batter must collect page numbers corresponding to a puzzle to reach the top of the Library. In these pages, a story alluding to Japhet is able to be read by the player:

* Drawing from his waning forces, he created the Library, more beautiful than ever before. Its height pierced the smoky clouds and there he stood.

* Much like a guardian angel, he had done everything for them. He had brought them peace, security and entertainment. Such was his generosity.

* For a while, that was all good and well for all, they enjoyed the new land with the innocence of a child. They were running down the streets, enjoying ...

* But the dynamics of the world soon drove the people mad. They forgot about their joys and eventually succumbed to their neurosis of fear and worries.

* Meanwhile, the Flaming Winged Sovereign weeped on his throne, their joys saddened to have been forgotten by Man. He had no more time for their worries.

* And so the Flaming Bird turned into a cat and the cat into a Ruler. Driven insane by his anger and sadness, he summoned forth a storm of evil spirits upon his sujects. His madness had ...

* While the spectres where destroying the world he had created, he sought helter [sic] at the summit of his most wonderful creation, the Great Library.

* There was nothing else to be done but wait for the man who would rise forth to destroy him. For deep inside his soul, there was no doubt the what he did was evil. The End

Battles
Japhet is battled twice in the game. He is first fought in the Library, possessing Valerie. In this battle, he tries to summon Spectres against the Batter, but fails and quickly escapes. This form of Japhet is easy to beat. Though he does use an attack that hits both The Batter and Alpha for massive amounts of damage, he will only do this once and flee shortly after. Add-On Omega is found immediately after this fight.

Japhet is then fought on the roof of the Library as the boss of Zone 2 and the second boss of the game. He has three phases, gradually emerging more and more out of Valerie. Since Japhet is a songbird, his Competences are all sound-related. The battle against him is easy overall, though his Head Voices attack hits very hard for his level.

The Room
In The Room, The Batter encounters an entity known as The Bird. This entity appears to be a version of Japhet before the events through which he became a guardian. He repeatedly warns The Batter to be careful not to fall off of the cliff he is perched upon. The Batter asks him to help The Big Mister out of the hole he is trapped in, which he is able to accomplish by attaching a flock of birds to The Big Mister by ropes and instructing them to lift him up. He does this in return for a book, which contains a diagram of an orchid.

The orchid book can also be found in Japhet's library earlier on in Zone Two, and an orchid is seen painted on a wall near the top of the library while ascending to battle Japhet.

---

From tumblr.com:

Four books with a torn page for each is used as a puzzle required to be solved in the Library of Zone 2 before meeting Valerie/Japhet. The 'eight unique pages' are based on the same two pages of text, differentiated only by the suit of the images' watermarks and where the text is faded.

Pages 32-33

This is the story of three Guardians chosen by the Queen to rule over the Zones, islets of life lost in the Netherworld.
The first Guardian, Dedan, was filled with anger. Thanks to his strong determination and his body made out of Steel, he ruled his Zone with an iron fist.
The second one, Japhet, was good and generous. Due to his kind personality, he was loved by all. He was constantly on his feet, doing his best to provide safety and peace to his subjects.
The third one, Enoch, was cold yet fair. He created the a fifth Element which he distributed in his Zone, sugar. Inhabitants of his Zone quickly became dependent of this Magical substance. Although they were happy, they were disconnect from reality.
According to some dark legends, the Queen lives with her Father in her room, creating ghosts to destroy the world they themselves had created. Some say that her beauty is comparable to the Heart of the Sun while others swear she is invisible. And yet, all those rumors are nothing but speculations.
