[scene opens in a public library, as the puppet female librarian (long blonde hair, red dress) addresses the children gathered around her, while Mister N (a yellow puppet with red cheeks and a giant horn-like nose) stands next to her]
LIBRARIAN: Come gather around, everyone. It's time for story hour ... That's good. Now remember, everyone wants to hear the story, so please be very quiet while I read to you.
[she opens her book]
LIBRARIAN: Ahem, today's story is a very special story about a very funny animal. The title is "Nancy the Nannygoat."
MR. N: Honk! Honk! Honk! Aa-ooo-gah!
LIBRARIAN: My goodness, there must be a lot of cars outside. Well, let's continue the story ...
[apparently unaware that Mister N's nose was the source of the noise, she looks down at her book and begins reading]
LIBRARIAN: "One day, Farmer Jones decided to clean up his barnyard. 'This place is such a mess, just look at all this junk' ... And Farmer Jones was right. Scattered about the farmyard were old tin cans, bottles, newspapers, and--"
MR. N: Honk! Honk! Honk! Aa-ooo-gah!
LIBRARIAN: My dear, there's lots of traffic today, so much noise ...
MR. N: Honk! Honk! Honk! Aa-ooo-gah!
[she finally looks over at Mister N]
LIBRARIAN: Why, it isn't traffic at all! It's you making all that racket! If you want to stay for the story, you'll have to be quiet, sir.
MR. N: I'm sorry, but y'see, I can't help it. I'm Mister N ... Everytime I hear a word that starts with the same sound that starts "Noisy Nose," my noisy nose makes a noise.
LIBRARIAN: Try to control yourself ... please.
[she drops the terse tone, then turns back to the children and addresses them sweetly]
LIBRARIAN: The others want to hear the story!
MR. N: I'll try.
LIBRARIAN: Very well. Now, where were we? Oh yes ...
[she starts reading again]
LIBRARIAN: "Farmer Jones wanted to clean up the awful mess in his farmyard, so he decided to ask Nancy the Nannygoat for some help."
MR. N: Honk! Honk! Honk! Aa-ooo-gah!
LIBRARIAN: What is it now, Mister N?
MR. N: That word you said, it made my noisy nose sound off.
LIBRARIAN: What word, "nannygoat?"
[cut to a drawing of a goat, as Mister N's nose goes off again]
MR. N: [in voice over] Yes, "nannygoat" starts with the same sound that starts "noisy nose." Listen, "nannygoat" ... "Noisy nose." The same starting sound. That's my very own sound.
[cut back to the library]
LIBRARIAN: That's wonderful, Mister N ... Can we go on with the story?
MR. N: Sure, I wanna find out what happens!
LIBRARIAN: So does everyone else ...
[she starts reading again]
LIBRARIAN: "Farmer Jones thought that goats loved to eat strange things, like tin cans, so he offered Nancy the goat a nickel to eat up all the trash."
[cut to a drawing of the goat looking at a nickel]
MR. N: [in voice over] Honk! Honk! Honk! Aa-ooo-gah!
[cut back to the library, as the librarian is getting more and more exasperated]
LIBRARIAN: What now?!
MR. N: That word you said.
LIBRARIAN: "Nickel?"
MR. N: Honk! Honk! Honk! Aa-ooo-gah!
[she puts a hand to her head and starts shaking]
MR. N: Yes, "nickel" starts with the same sound that starts "noisy nose." Listen ... "Nickel." "Noisy nose." "Nickel." "Noisy nose." The same starting sound.
LIBRARIAN: That's nice ...
MR. N: Honk! Honk! Honk! Aa-ooo-gah!
LIBRARIAN: Oh!
MR. N: Good for you! "Nice" starts with the same sound that starts "noisy nose." Listen ... "Nice." "Noisy nose."
LIBRARIAN: You listen, Mister N! I want to get on with the story!
MR. N: Of course! Go ahead ...
LIBRARIAN: Well ...
[she starts reading again]
LIBRARIAN: "Soon, the work was begun. The goat ate and ate. She ate an old tire, the battered old hat, and she even ate an old worn-out ..."
[she suddenly stops reading]
LIBRARIAN: Oh, I can't go on!
MR. N: Why not? What's wrong?
LIBRARIAN: This word, I can't say it!
[one of the children gets up]
GIRL: What is the word?
LIBRARIAN: Oh, it's ... Oh! It's ... "necktie."
MR. N: Honk! Honk! Honk! Aa-ooo-gah!
LIBRARIAN: Oh, I just knew it!
[cut to a drawing of the goat with a necktie in its mouth]
MR. N: [in voice over] "Necktie" starts with the same sound that starts "noisy nose." Listen ... "Necktie." "Noisy nose." The same starting sound.
[cut back to the library, as the librarian tries to press on through the rest of the story (with Mister N honking after every "N" word)]
LIBRARIAN: "By nightfall, Nancy the Nannygoat had nibbled a napkin, a nail, a newspaper, some nylons, and a notebook!"
[as Mister N's honking becomes one long continuous drone, the librarian tries to read faster]
LIBRARIAN: "The farmer paid Nancy the Nannygoat the nickel when the job was done! Unfortunately, Nancy ate too much and later that night her friend, Nat the Nightcrawler, had to call the neighborhood nurse!"
[she turns and looks at Mister N, waving her hands in the air while yelling out the final word from the story]
LIBRARIAN: Nurse!
MR. N: Aa-ooo-gah!
LIBRARIAN: Nurse!
MR. N: Aa-ooo-gah!
LIBRARIAN: Nuuuuurse!
MR. N: Aa-ooo-gah!
LIBRARIAN: Nurse!
[scene fades to black]
