[the bald-headed African American female library assistant hands a book ("Hand Me Downs" by Rhea Kohan) to fellow prisoner Marisol "Flaca" Gonzales]
POUSSEY: Yeah, alright. Just make sure you reshelve this book in its proper place ... We on Dewey Decimal and shit in here, don't let me find no aquatic sports over in paranormal phenomena!
[she stares at her]
POUSSEY: Got it?
FLACA: Alright.
[she walks away with a bored look on her face, but not before placing the book haphazardly on one of the nearby shelves]
POUSSEY: [pause] Fuck you.

Season 2x09
"40 OZ of Furlough"

Book: Hand Me Downs - Rhea Kohan

Flaca and her "I'm not really a smoker" excuse - and then places the book back on a random shelf. We are not impressed.

Poussey Washington
Played by Samira Wiley
Season 1–present

A prison inmate, she has been in prison for two years at the start of the series and has four years left. Her mother died while she was in prison. Poussey is a good-natured jokester and is often seen with her best friend "Taystee" (whom she helps out in the library). During the season finale, she is revealed to have a great singing voice, and performs an improvised rendition of Amazing Grace. Flashbacks during the second season revealed that her father, who was in the United States Army, moved her family to Germany where he was stationed. In Germany she had a romantic and physical relationship with the base commander's daughter. When the relationship was revealed, the base commander reassigned her father to a post in the United States. It is also implied that she is in love with Taystee, who does not return her feelings. Vee antagonizes Poussey from the start, whether from jealousy that Taystee found someone important to her inside prison, or from implied homophobia, it isn't clear. She separates Poussey and Taystee, causing a rift in their relationship. She is the only African-American inmate not to fall for Vee's charms, and begins a long campaign to fight her throughout the season. Eventually, Poussey causes irreparable damage to Vee's tobacco business by smashing up several tins of tobacco and pouring bleach on them. Realising that no amount of intimidation will stop her, Vee decides to mollify Poussey by ejecting Taystee from the gang, and the two later make up after a physical fight in the library.

Poussey Washington is an inmate at Litchfield Penitentiary. She is portrayed by Samira Wiley.

First seen: "Tit Punch"
Season(s): S1 - S2
Family: Unknown
Status: Alive
Offense: Selling Marijuana
Occupation: Library (Litchfield)
Also known as: MacKenzie (by Taystee)

Poussey grew up in a military family and moved around a lot. Her first name comes from a place in France where her father once served. While living in Germany, she fell in love with a girl there, but after the girl's father caught them having sex, he made it so that the Washingtons had to return to the States. Initially, Poussey tried to get rid of her feelings for the girl, but eventually goes to confront the girl's father and even brings a gun. Just as she's about to pull it out, her father catches her and they leave.

Poussey's locked up for selling marijuana (Little Moustachioed Shit). She has a 6 year sentence, and has already served two of them as of Season One. During her second year, her mom passed away.

She makes toilet hooch for her friends, which Vee hopes to sell for profit, but the idea is rejected by Poussey. Vee then uses Poussey's unreciprocated romantic feelings for Taystee to isolate her from the tribe (A Whole Other Hole). She gave a bottle of the hooch to friends to help them mourn the death of Tricia Miller in Season One.

Poussey's zodiac sign is Aries.

Poussey is a funny, outspoken and caring woman. She likes to joke around with her fellow inmates and tends to avoid confrontation.

She is best friends with Tasha "Taystee" Jefferson and they enjoy joking around together to make the atmosphere lighter in the prison. She later develops unrequited romantic feelings for her. While goofing off, Taystee kisses her, but is unable to accept that she may have more than platonic feelings for Poussey. For a period later on, Poussey joins Vee's group to secretly sell cigarettes to the prison inmates for profit. However, she protests upon discovering Taystee is selling heroin, on Vee's directive, to the inmates. She does her best to interfere, even going as far as physically attacking Vee, which only causes herself to be beaten up by Crazy Eyes as retaliation. Pissed, Poussey deliberately wrecks Vee's entire secret stash of tobacco. This incident forces Vee to defect Taystee from her group as she knows Poussey's main reason for acting out is because of Taystee. In turn, Taystee, out of anger at Poussey's actions, which cost her Vee's protection, confronts the latter. When Poussey attempts to walk away from the argument, Taystee pushes her to the ground and nearly attacks her. However, when she sees Poussey cowering in fear, Taystee breaks down in tears and apologizes. The two hug and make up. From then on, they renew their friendship.
