Case Study No. 1962: James the Librarian

| SOCIAL MEDIUM | From San Francisco - James the Librarian
2:39
Beatrix has finally lost it and has started stalking James. Yes, James is real. Really weird but real. Do you guys actually think he's a ghost? He's in the video, at least we can rule out vampire. Oh, brother. This is Brandon and I officially think I need some distance from this project.

Social Medium' is a transmedia web series that follows hipster psychic Beatrix Beckett (Jayn) as she attempts to create a lifestyle vlog only to be interrupted by paranormal activity trying to make contact from beyond the grave through her psychic Internet abilities. With the help of her computer savvy stop-motion animator boyfriend, Fallon (Isaacs), and wry coffee slinging best friend, Zola (Hackett), she tries to discover her life's purpose while keeping the ghost and demons at bay.

[scene opens with a young woman speaking directly into the camera]
BEATRIX: Okay, quick James update, and then we are on the move.
[quick cut to another shot of the woman speaking directly to the camera]
BEATRIX: I haven't seen James in probably a week ... or more. I've been asking all the neighbors about him, and no one seems to know anything. There have been no new notes under my door ...
[quick cut to another shot of the woman speaking directly to the camera]
BEATRIX: And when I asked my aunt about it, she stared acting really really weird.
[quick cut to another shot of the woman speaking directly to the camera]
BEATRIX: Well, weirder.
[quick cut to another shot of the woman speaking directly to the camera]
BEATRIX: Weird for her.
[quick cut to another shot of the woman speaking directly to the camera]
BEATRIX: So, the only thing left to do at this point is to go to the library.
[quick cut to another shot of the woman speaking directly to the camera (while rolling her eyes)]
BEATRIX: And I am really starting to sound like a cliche character on "Buffy."
["Social Medium" appears on screen, then cut to the woman (shooting herself with a handheld camera) in the public library]
[cut to the woman's POV as she walks past several bookshelves, when she stops on a young male librarian (brown hair, beard, plaid short-sleeve shirt, blue jeans, sneakers) looking at a book]
BEATRIX: [from off camera] Shit!
[the camera shakes violently as the girl hides behind one of the bookshelves (before turning the camera on herself)]
BEATRIX: [whispers] That's James! See, I told you guys, he totally exists!
[she slowly points the camera towards the other side of the bookshelf, as the librarian (already looking in her direction) smiles and slowly waves]
BEATRIX: [from off camera] Oh!
[the camera shakes violently again, then she turns the camera back on herself (with a pained look on her face)]
BEATRIX: [whispers] Oh no ... Now he totally thinks I'm a stalker! Embarrassing!
[quick cut to the woman screwing up her courage]
BEATRIX: [whispers] I'm just gonna ... I'm gonna suck it up. Go say hi.
[she sighs, then slowly points the camera back towards the other side of the bookshelf ... only the librarian has now disappeared]
BEATRIX: [from off camera] Where'd he go?
[she moves towards the spot where he was standing]
BEATRIX: [from off camera] I, uh ...
[she moves the camera back and forth, then zooms in on a book sitting on the shelf, with a note taped to the cover reading "For B, Read Me"]
BEATRIX: [from off camera] What ...
[she puts the camera down, then picks up the book]
[quick cut to the woman putting the note on the shelf, revealing that the book is Stephen King's "The Shining"]
[cut to the woman back in her room, holding up the book while speaking directly to the camera]
BEATRIX: James left me "The Shining!"
[quick cut to another shot of the woman speaking directly to the camera]
BEATRIX: Okay, I have never read "The Shining."
[quick cut to another shot of the woman speaking directly to the camera]
BEATRIX: I've never read "The Shining," I've never seen the movie. I have no idea what it's about, except there's a boy, and his finger talks, and there's these two twin girls.
[quick cut to another shot of the woman speaking directly to the camera]
BEATRIX: Why James would leave me this book, I have no idea ... It's a clue!
[quick cut to another shot of the woman speaking directly to the camera]
BEATRIX: It's clearly, clearly a clue.
[quick cut to another shot of the woman speaking directly to the camera]
BEATRIX: But I'm baffled.
[quick cut to another shot of the woman speaking directly to the camera]
BEATRIX: It's not even a library book ... Look!
[quick cut to the woman holding up the book to show there's no label on the spine]
BEATRIX: See? It's a "book" book, from a bookstore!
[quick cut to another shot of the woman speaking directly to the camera]
BEATRIX: James went to the bookstore, bought a book for me, and brought it to the library to leave for me!
[she pauses, then starts to smile]
BEATRIX: Which is actually kinda sweet ...
[quick cut to another shot of the woman speaking directly to the camera]
BEATRIX: If you've read this book and have any idea what he's trying to tell me, please ... tell me!
[quick cut to another shot of the woman speaking directly to the camera]
BEATRIX: Looks like I got a book to read ...

From social-medium.com:

Beatrix, played by Tara Jayn always knew she was different. From the day she created her first MySpace page, she began receiving cryptic messages from Beyond The Grave. Literally, and account call BeyondTheGrave42, which really did turn out to be the lame screen name for a ghost! From that moment on, Beatrix became entangled in the world of ghosts, demons, witches, and the occasional mummy. Her psychic powers are always connected to the internet, which totally sucks when she just wants to send a text, watch a YouTube clip, or just get directions to the hot new tapas restaurant. Luckily, her boyfriend Fallon and her bestie Zolla are always there to support her. Or not.

Beatrix R. Beckett: I've you've been reading my blog, you've read about James. I know, it's so weird. I'm so bummed. I thought we were becoming friends, and I was really enjoying his company and he's a really nice sweet quiet guy. He likes to read books, how cute is that? And he got a degree in library science... I didn't even know there was a science to libraries!
