A fifty-three-year-old woman was allegedly 'brutally assaulted' according to the police, on Tuesday evening in Balangoda, when two individuals forcibly cut her leg off and ran away with it.

The victim, a 53- year old resident of the Dehigasthalawa area in Balangoda, has been identified as the librarian of the Balangoda Municipal Council. Police Media Spokesperson, SSP Ajith Rohana speaking to News1st said that the incident had ocurred at around 5.20 p.m. on Tuesday when the victim had been returning home from work.

Police have identified the suspects as the victim's own brother and his son. SSP Ajih Rohana said that the perprators had chopped off the lower part of the leg, carried it off to a jungle and later thrown it away.

After police initiated investigations in this regard, the two suspects were arrested in the Balangoda area at around 5.30 on Wednesday morning. The police along with the suspects, were also able to apprehend the machete which was allegedly used to severe the victim's leg.

SSP Ajith Rohana said that the suspects are to be produced before the magistrate on Wednesday. Police stated that the incident had been considered as a case of "attempted murder."
