[scene opens with a young female librarian showing a group of children the card catalog]
CATHERINE TAYLOR: This is the card catalog. Each book has its own address, and you can look it up right here. You can look it up three ways ... by the subject, the book's author, or the title. You can find any book you need once you know the streets in your library, and you can look up your book's address right here in the card catalog.
KID 1: Some libraries have computers, not the regular card catalog. How do you look up your book in the computerized card catalog?
CATHERINE TAYLOR: Well, they both give you the same information, even though it's in different forms.
[an older female librarian approaches]
PATRICIA JOHNSON: Hi, Misses Taylor. Children.
KIDS: Hi!
PATRICIA JOHNSON: How are the plans for the party coming?
KID 2: Good, but we need to know how to use the card catalog, so we can find more ideas for our party.
PATRICIA JOHNSON: Wonderful, may I help?
CATHERINE TAYLOR: Oh, we'd love it!
PATRICIA JOHNSON: First, we know there are two types of book ... fiction and nonfiction. Now, even though they're different, you look them both up in the same place in the same way.
[one of the children points to the card catalog]
KID 3: Uh, you mean in there?
[Miss Johnson laughs]
PATRICIA JOHNSON: It isn't hard. All you have to find is the call number.
KIDS: Call number? What's that?
[she holds up a book and points at the spine]
PATRICIA JOHNSON: Every book has a call number. Well, it's the address of the book. So, if you know the streets in your library, and the address of your book--
KID 4: Then we'll be able to find the book we want!
KID 1: Could you please explain that one more time?
PATRICIA JOHNSON: Wait a minute, I have an idea.
[she points off camera]
PATRICIA JOHNSON: Here comes James, he'll tell you in a way you will never forget!
[all of the children turn and react excitedly to what she's pointing at off camera]
PATRICIA JOHNSON: James, could you tell these children how you learned to use the card catalog?
[cut to an African American man walking down the stairs]
JAMES RAY: Sure, Miss Johnson!
[someone off camera begins beatboxing, as the man dancing and starts singing]
JAMES RAY: Check it out! Find out what it's all about! You can learn the way to look, find out how to find a book! Check it out!
KIDS: Check it out!
JAMES RAY: Find out what it's all about! You can learn the way to look, find out how to find a book! Now let me tell you a story, how it happened to me, one time when I went to the library! I wanted to find a very special book, but the truth is--
KIDS: Yo!
JAMES RAY: I didn't know how to look! I was feelin' bad, I didn't know where to go, I was a little afraid to ask someone in the know! How to use the library, to find anything you want to see! Just as I was gettin' ready to walk, someone came over and started to talk!
[cut to a closeup of Misses Johnson's face]
JAMES RAY: [in voice over] She smiled and said, "Can I help you, please? I work right here at the library!"
[cut back to James singing]
JAMES RAY: She was very nice and sincere to me, and she helped me feel better in the library! I told her how I couldn't find my book ...
[cut back to the closeup of Misses Johnson's face]
JAMES RAY: [in voice over] Then she smiled again and said, "I'll show you how to look!"
[cut back to James singing]
JAMES RAY: Check it out, find out what it's all about! You can learn the way to look, find out how to find a book!
[cut to the camera panning across the bookshelves in the library]
JAMES RAY: [in voice over] She told me the library is like a town, with all different places and streets around!
[the camera zooms in on the spine label on a book]
JAMES RAY: [in voice over] Begin by learning where your book lives ...
[cut back to James singing]
JAMES RAY: To find anything, start with the list!
KIDS: The list! A list!
JAMES RAY: Shows if your book exists!
KIDS: The list! A list!
[cut to a closeup of the card catalog]
JAMES RAY: [in voice over] Shows where your book lives!
[cut back to James singing]
JAMES RAY: There's a list in every library, to show you everything that you want to see! To find a book or anything at all ...
[cut to another shot of the card catalog]
JAMES RAY: [in voice over] Go to the list, it's called the catalog!
[cut back to James singing]
KIDS: The list! Is called!
JAMES RAY: The library's catalog!
KIDS: The list! Is called!
JAMES RAY: The library's catalog! Kick it!
[he begins dancing]
JAMES RAY: Woo! Come on!
[he stops and continues singing]
JAMES RAY: The catalog is the list, from A to Z so you won't miss! Find out if your book is there, and if it is--
KIDS: Yo!
JAMES RAY: It shows you where!
[cut to someone off camera opening one of the drawers in the card catalog]
JAMES RAY: [in voice over] The catalog can be all cards ... Check it out man, it's not hard!
[cut to a computer screen]
JAMES RAY: [in voice over] Or the catalog can be another way, it can be on a computer that you can play!
[cut back to James singing]
JAMES RAY: Now just before you get ready to look, on a computer or cards to find your book, remember the library has three ways to find exactly where your book stays!
KIDS: S! A! T!
JAMES RAY: Are the letters ... The letters that can help you remember, think!
KIDS: S! A! T!
JAMES RAY: Like me, and you'll find your book at the library! Check it out! Find out what it's all about! You can learn the way to look, find out how to find a book!
KIDS: S!
JAMES RAY: Stands for the subject, you know, like what's your book about and so ... When you check the catalog, it's a breeze, to learn about people, flowers, or trees!
KIDS: And A!
JAMES RAY: Stands for the author, it's true ... Who wrote the book for me and you! Who wrote the book, do you know, the last name of the author will show!
KIDS: Now T!
JAMES RAY: Stands for the title that's there! The name of the book, everywhere!
[cut to the camera zooming in on the spine title of the book "The Romance of Boston Bay"]
JAMES RAY: [in voice over] The first word in the title, you'll see ... Except for "a", "an", and "the"!
[cut back to James singing]
JAMES RAY: So think "subject", "author", and "title" each time ...
KIDS: S! A! T!
JAMES RAY: And this rhyme!
[cut to a man using the card catalog]
JAMES RAY: [in voice over] When you go to the catalog, this information will take you ...
KIDS: [in voice over] Far!
[cut back to James laughing and dancing, then he continues singing]
JAMES RAY: Now please, listen carefully, for the part of this rap that is the key! To learn the place where your book lives in the catalog, remember this ...
[cut to someone flipping through the index cards in a drawer]
JAMES RAY: [in voice over] A card number is always there ...
[cut to a closeup of a book's spine label]
JAMES RAY: [in voice over] Card numbers are everywhere ...
[cut back to James singing]
JAMES RAY: In every library around the world, they help grown-ups and boys and girls!
[cut back to the drawer in the card catalog]
JAMES RAY: [in voice over] To find your book's correct address, use the card number to do your best!
[cut to a closeup of a book's spine label]
JAMES RAY: [in voice over] Find your book right on the shelf ...
[cut back to James singing]
JAMES RAY: You can do it all by yourself! And you'll feel good, just like me, when you know how to use the library! Check it out, now you know what to do! Check it out, it's all for you! Check it out, everybody! Find out what it's all about! You can learn the way to look, find out how to find a book! Check it out!
KIDS: Check it out!
JAMES RAY: Find out what it's all about! You can learn the way to look, find out how to find a book!
[he points directly to the camera, then cut to Miss Taylor and the kids]
CATHERINE TAYLOR: Alright, let's hit the card catalog! Let's go!
[the kids grab some pieces of paper and turn to the card catalog]
CATHERINE TAYLOR: Okay, here you go ...
[cut to James wiping the sweat off his brow, as Misses Johnson walks over and puts her hand on his shoulder]
PATRICIA JOHNSON: Oh, thank you, James! That was wonderful!
JAMES RAY: Thanks ...
PATRICIA JOHNSON: How's the new album coming?
JAMES RAY: Uh, it's going great, actually. I'm doing the research right now!
PATRICIA JOHNSON: Oh, I can't wait to hear it!
