[scene opens inside of the National Central Library, where Edward and Alphonse are looking for any evidence that might have survived the fire that decimated the First Branch building, when the male library assistant (black hair, glasses, brown sweater) puts down a box full of damaged books]
LIBRARY ASSISTANT: We've been searching since this morning, but these are the only books we were able to recover.
DENNY BROSH: This is terrible.
[Edward takes one of the burned books out of the box]
ALPHONSE: Brother ...
[a young female librarian (African American, brown hair pulled back into a bun, brown sweater) walks into the room carrying a notepad]
LIBRARIAN: Sure enough, there aren't any books authored by Tim Marcoh in the main building. If they had been moved there from the branch, there should be a record of it, after all.
EDWARD: Um, is there any possibility that it was checked out by anyone?
LIBRARIAN: Yes, but since the circulation records were also burned up ...
EDWARD: I see ...
ALPHONSE: It was probably burned up together with all the others.
EDWARD: If only we could have confirmed that his book was really even in there ... Was there anyone else that worked there?
[she looks over at the assistant]
LIBRARIAN: He and I were the only two people on staff in that branch.
EDWARD: Just you two?
LIBRARIAN: Only State Alchemists were permitted in the branch, and all.
EDWARD: I think I remember there being a young lady there who wore glasses.
LIBRARIAN: Ah, you mean Sheska? She was fired a little while back.
EDWARD: Fired?
LIBRARY ASSISTANT: That girl was a little unusual.
LIBRARIAN: Sheska was a bookworm.
EDWARD: Worm ... ?
[cut to the Elric brothers arriving at Sheska's home, as one of their bodyguards knocks on the door]
DENNY BROSH: [pause] I guess she isn't home.
EDWARD: The lights are on. Let's open it!
MARIA ROSS: You can't!
[Edward opens the door, and they see mountains of books covering every inch of the house]
EDWARD: What a mountain of books!
DENNY BROSH: Does someone actually live here?
[Edward yells inside]
EDWARD: Sheska-san, are you here? Sheska-san!
[there is no response]
EDWARD: [to himself] She's not here.
[there is suddenly a muffled cry from somewhere under a pile of books]
SHESKA: Help ... Help me!
[the group suddenly spring into action and start madly digging through the books]
ALPHONSE: There's someone ... there's someone buried here!
EDWARD: Dig! Dig! Just keep digging!
[cut to the young former librarian (brown hair, glasses, green eyes, sweatshirt and blue jeans) sitting on the floor and drinking some tea]
SHESKA: Thank you very much. I inadvertantly knocked over that pile of books. I couldn't breathe, and thought I was going to die.
EDWARD: Sheska-san, you used to work at the first branch, right?
SHESKA: Yes. All I ever did was read books while I was working, so I got fired. I have to support my sick mother, but I'm just no good at anything besides reading books--
EDWARD: Um, anyhow, Sheska-san, do you remember there being a book authored by someone named Tim Marcoh at the branch?
SHESKA: Tim Marcoh?
EDWARD: It would probably be a thick, handwritten research journal.
SHESKA: A thick, handwritten research journal ... by Tim Marcoh ... Ah yes, I remember! It was a leather-bound book, with handwritten manuscripts inside!
[a look of surprise comes over Edward's face]
EDWARD: Are you sure about that?
SHESKA: Yes, I remember all of the books in the branch's collection!
EDWARD: Which would mean, sure enough ... Damn. We're right back where we started.
ALPHONSE: Brother ...
SHESKA: Yes, indeed. It sure is sad when you can't find a book you want to read ... I know that feeling terribly well.
[Sheska has a flashback to searching through the books in her home]
SHESKA: I too once wandered among this mountain of books, for nearly three days, but still did not find the one volume I wanted to read.
[the flashback ends]
SHESKA: It's so sad, so sad ...
[she starts to cry]
EDWARD: Sh-Sheska-san, thanks. With your help, we at least confirmed that the book existed. We'll manage to do something from here on.
DENNY BROSH: You mean, there's still some other way?
[cut to everyone standing in front of the charred remains of the First Branch]
EDWARD: I'm going to take the cinders of all the books that were burned, and transmute them back to their original form!
DENNY BROSH: Incredible! Can you really do something like that?
EDWARD: Watch closely!
[a sudden gust of wind blows some of the ashes away, as the male bodyguard points in the direction of where the ashes flew off]
DENNY BROSH: Uh, what about that? Is it okay for that stuff to go flying off?
[Edward drops to his knees in defeat]
ALPHONSE: No matter how hard you try, it'll be impossible, brother.
SHESKA: Um, if you'd like, shall I reproduce the book for you?
[they look at her in surprise]
SHESKA: I remember the entire contents of a book, once I read it. And since I've read most of the books in the branch--
[Edward excitedly jumps up to his feet]
EDWARD: You mean it? Can you really do that?!
SHESKA: It's a silly little talent I have, but if I can help you out--
["Three days later ... " appears on screen, then cut to Sheska arranging several piles of paper on a table in her house]
SHESKA: Here you go! There was a lot of content, so it took me three whole days to write it all down!
EDWARD: This is Marcoh-san's research journal? Really?
SHESKA: Yes! Everything from light and easy hors d'oeuvres, to party dinners you'd invite guests to ... Tim Marcoh's "One Thousand Recipes for Today's Menus!"
[everyone gives her a confused look, but she remains upbeat]
SHESKA: Right?
[cut to Maria reading from one of the pages]
MARIA ROSS: "One tablespoon of sugar, a pinch of salt and pepper" ... This really is today's menu.
[Denny leans in close to Sheska]
DENNY BROSH: [whispering] Are you sure you didn't get the wrong author?
SHESKA: You're not serious! All I did was reproduce what I was told!
MARIA ROSS: It was all in vain, I'm sorry to say ...
[Edward reads through another pile of papers]
EDWARD: No ... you're sure that, word for word, this is the same thing that Marcoh-san wrote?
SHESKA: Yes, no doubt about it!
EDWARD: You're incredible! Thanks ...
[he looks up from the papers]
EDWARD: Lieutenant Ross! Give Sheska this amount of money for me!
[he hands her some papers, then opens the door]
EDWARD: If you go to State Alchemist Services with my references there, they'll take it out of my research budget for you! Al, let's go!
[the Elric brothers leave]
MARIA ROSS: Hold on .. Sargeant, here!
[she hands Denny the papers, then runs off after them, as he turns to Sheska]
DENNY BROSH: What is he planning to do with a book like that?
SHESKA: Indeed ...
[they both look at the amount of money written on the piece of paper, and blurt out "That much?!"]
DENNY BROSH: For him to pay out this amount all at once, he sure is a State Alchemist!

Full Metal Alchemist: Episode 18: Marcoh's Notes (2003 series)

On the night before Edward, Alphonse, and Major Armstrong return to Central City from Resembool, Lust is searching the National Central Library for Dr. Marcoh's research notes. Watching in secret, Scar notices her resemblance to his brother's fiancee just as she notices him with Gluttony moving in behind Scar. Lust makes it clear that she can't have Scar interfere with the Elric's quest, and signals Gluttony to attack forcing Scar to fight him off with his destructive alchemy.

The next day the Elrics and Armstrong leave the train station greeted by Armstrong's subordinates Maria Ross and Denny Brosh to relieve Armstrong of his duty to protect the Elrics while he reports to Central Command, though they mistake Al as the Fullmetal Alchemist. Despite not wanting the bodyguards, Ed learns that it is due to Scar back in Central again. Just as the Elrics leave, Ross mentions the information to Armstrong that the Elrics quickly find out that the Library has burnt down. At Central Command, after he annoys Roy Mustang over the phone about Elicia, Maes Hughes confirms that Scar was involved with the Library's destruction due to eyewitnesses and his blood stained clothes found right by the river, but suspects there were other people involved due to the evidence pointing to signs of a struggle. Hughes also mentions that with Basque Grand dead, Roy has a good chance of being transferred back to Central Command, warning him of dealing with potential enemies as well as gathering as many supporters as he can. Going to another library, Ed discovered few books survived the fire with nothing that can help him, and the head librarian can't find anything by Tim Marcoh in their records. When the head librarian mentions that she and the worker with her were the only ones on staff at the National Central Library, Ed recalls that another girl worked there when he visited three years ago. Recognizing this person as Sheska, the head librarian mentions she was fired not too long ago, and was a bookworm.

Arriving at Sheska's house, the group finds a mountain load of books and Sheska buried underneath them, forcing the four of them to dig her out. Sheska is able to confirm Marcoh's material was in the library but with it destroyed, Ed is back to square one and tries to rebuild the entire library and books from alchemy, but a windstorm ruins the plan scattering the ruined book pages. Sheska reveals she can reproduce the material thanks to her photographic memory taking three days to reproduce Marcoh's large research material. Ed leaves Ross and Brosh to pay off Sheska while he returns to Central Library to look over the material.

Despite it looking like a cookbook, Ed believes it to be encoded to avoid for the material to fall in the wrong hands. Spending a large amount of time working on the decoding, the Elrics are visited by Hughes. While talking about the security measures on dealing with Scar, once Hughes mentions the difficulties he is having due to numerous court files stored at the National Central Library destroyed, Ed recommends Sheska to him to reproduce the files. Sheska agrees with this due to Al's encouragement. Hughes leaves promising additional security the following day addressing Maria Ross's concerns by privately stating their job is to watch over the Elrics as they uncover something only they can do.

While in a coma, Scar recalls his encounter with Lust and Gluttony. After failing to destroy Gluttony with his destructive alchemy, suffering a chest injury, Scar blew off Gluttony's hand to break free and dodged Lust's attack. Recognizing them as Homunculus, Scar watches as the candles dropped by Lust start a fire and he uses his alchemy in a large attack to escape. Scar wakes up in an Ishvalan Refugee Camp and greeted by a boy named Rick who recognizes him as an Ishvalan. Rick takes Scar to his grandfather who recognizes him from the wanted posters, pointing out they would never sell out a fellow Ishvalan and reveals there are other Refugee camps scattered throughout the land. As the days go by, waiting for Ed to finish his research, Maria Ross overhears Ed as he finished the research and horrifically discovered the truth about the Philosopher's Store requiring the sacrifice of live human beings for it to be made. Scar is ready to leave the camp since he felt no reason to stay for betraying the way of God and Rick is admiring Scar's tattoo. Scar says he got it from his brother as a gift.

From wikipedia.org:

The Fullmetal Alchemist anime and manga series feature an extensive cast of fictional characters created by Hiromu Arakawa. The story is set in a fictional universe within the 20th Century in which alchemy is one of the most advanced scientific techniques known to man. Although the story in the first anime and the manga basically start the same, the first anime, midway through its run, begins to differ greatly from the manga; characters that are killed early on in the manga survive to the end of the first anime and vice versa. The second anime's (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood) events, however, follow the ones from the manga.

The story follows the adventures of two alchemist brothers named Edward and Alphonse Elric. While trying to revive their mother, the brothers lost parts of their bodies, with Alphonse's soul being contained in a suit of armor, and Edward replacing his right arm and left leg with two sets of automail, a type of advanced prosthetic limb. Advised by Roy Mustang, an alchemist from the State Military, Edward becomes a State Alchemist, and starts traveling with Alphonse through the country of Amestris in order to find a way to recover their bodies. In their search, they hear of the Philosopher's Stone, a powerful alchemy artifact that the brothers can use to recover their bodies. However, after becoming a State Alchemist, Edward discovers that several members of the military are also attempting to get the stone, most notably humanoid creatures known as homunculi, who start chasing the Elric brothers.

Sheska (Japanese "Shesuka")

Sheska (also spelled "Scieszka") is a mousy, bespectacled young woman who had previously worked as a librarian at the First Branch of the National Central Library in Central City. Because she spent all day reading the many documents stored there, instead of doing her job, she was fired.

She has a photographic memory and can remember and reproduce anything she has ever read, with word-for-word accuracy. Because of this, after the library burns down, the Elric brothers seek her out to see if she can remember any research papers by Tim Marcoh. She transcribes the entirety of his research for them, earning enough pay to last her a year for her troubles.

When Maes Hughes learns of how she helped the Elrics, he hires her to help recreate the criminal records that were destroyed in the fire.

In the first anime, after Hughes' death, Sheska helps Winry Rockbell discover the identity of Sloth.

Naomi Wakabayashi voices her in the first anime, and Gwendolyn Lau in the English dub. Her voice in the second series is provided by Chika Fujimura.

From amazon.com:

All librarians love books, but have you ever met one who just ate them up . . . literally? Miss Devine does. In this adaptation of "There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly," one Dewey Decimal diva has gone on a most unusual eating binge. From chomping down the story-hour chair to savoring the nonfiction shelf, Miss Devine is trying to chase down one particularly perfect word. As the story, told by a wide-eyed witness, gets more outlandish, the tension builds. Children all over the library are dying to know: What combination of letters could have possibly started this absurdly all-consuming spree?

From pelicanpub.com:

I KNOW A LIBRARIAN
WHO CHEWED ON A WORD

By Laurie Lazzaro Knowlton
Illustrated by Herb Leonhard

It's been said that librarians take their love of books to the extreme. In this story, Miss Devine, a bun-wearing bibliophile, has a passion for literacy that reaches new heights. She has actually chewed on a word, claims one small witness to this outrageous event. And as the children gossip in a suspenseful build up, dying to know which word set off this smorgasbord, we discover that Miss Devine has munched her way through the whole library. In the manner of "There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly," she has downed a book shelf, table, chair, cart, and a copy of Peter Pan trying to chase down this savory assemblage of letters. What is that word?

---

From herbleonhard.com:

I know a librarian who swallowed a book.
The red one about old Captain Hook!
She swallowed the book to embrace the word.
She practically purred when she ate that fine word.
How absurd!

I know a librarian who ate a book-cart.
Munching and crunching every last part!
She swallowed the cart to hold the book.
She swallowed the book to embrace the word.
She practically purred when she ate that fine word.
How absurd!

I know a librarian who chomped down a chair.
The story hour chair that was sitting right there!
She swallowed the chair to cushion the cart.
She swallowed the cart to hold the book.
She swallowed the book to embrace the word.
She practically purred when she ate that fine word.
How absurd!

Then she chomped and chewed,
And we all yaw-whooooooed.
Watch out! Watch out!
She's picking up speed!
Then out popped the word.

"A first-person action game inspired by roguelikes, immersive sims, and H. P. Lovecraft."
- eldritchgame.com

This game is some serious fun! It is the first in a while that has had me yearning to go back in, face the horrors again and attempt to return unscathed.

Do not be fooled. This game will suck you in and drain your brain of the last of it's sanity.

*****

So, we pretty much just dive straight in, foregoing any real meanderings through the library and it's contents, quickly recapping the back story and then jumping in to the first book, Dagon.

Kudos Minor Key Games, this is a great title.

Also, special thank you to David Pittman (http://twit ter.com/dphrygian) for sorting out the pre-alpha copy for a play through!

From pcgamer.com:

Eldritch is a first-person, voxel-based indie roguelike. You begin as a '20s-styled adventurer trapped in a twisting library, forced to hunt the souls of Great Old Ones within the pages of ancient books. This means visiting the undersea realm of Dagon, Nyarlathotep's Egyptian-themed temple, and deeper, stranger places beyond that. When you die you're returned to the library with your equipment and upgrades gone, but you retain any currency that you've stored in your bank chest, and any zones you've unlocked stay that way.

---

From wikia.com:

While the glowing books found within the starting library can be used to access the three main worlds of the game, there are also books that can be read without causing you to teleport. They describe the world you are in, its history, contain some tips on who you are and why you are here and may have some hints on how to proceed.

The History of the Library, Vol. 1 of 4
Legends tell of a catastrophic event thousands of years ago, when earth fell to the wrath of the Old Ones. The few survivors discovered an ancient rite which they used to seal the dreadful beings in a labyrinthine prison. Life on Earth once again flourished, and the survivors formed a convent of guardians to protect the secret ritual of binding.

The History of the Library, Vol. 2 of 4
Thousands of years passed, and the Old Ones slumbered in their prison. In the late 19th century, archaeologists in Arabia unearthed the site where the binding ritual had been invoked. The disturbance rippled through the fabric of the cosmos and awoke the ancient beings. Forgotten horrors spilled forth, and Earth was again in peril.

The History of the Library, Vol. 3 of 4
In the early 20th century, when the Old Ones threatened Earth for the second time, the guardians reconvened in New England to perform the ritual of binding once again. A modest library was chosen to host the rite, and the guardians elected one among them --the Librarian-- to remain at the prison and protect it from further disturbances.

The History of the Library, Vol. 4 of 4
At a small library in New England, the guardians performed the arcane ritual of binding to imprison the Old Ones. The Librarian, a singular guardian chosen to protect the site, was locked away with the terrible beings. But unbeknownst to the other guardians, an errant word spoken during the ritual shattered the Librarian's mind and memories...

There are also pages from an explorer's journal which can be found throughout the game: Page One is located near the entry point in the first Dagon world, Page Two is lying on the floor of the library, Page Three is located near the entry point in the Endless Library just after you pass the archdoor, and Page Four is located on the first floor in the second world of the Endless Library just near the entrance, in the same room.

While not explicitly stated, it is implied that the Explorer and the Librarian are the same person (due to the Librarian's amnesia caused by the ritual).

Explorer's Journal, Page 1
Something quite peculiar has happened to me. I feel the need to record this, in the event that I should not return.
The last thing I recall, I was examining that curious book in the library... And now I have found myself in a dangerous world full of lurking monsters and treacherous traps.
If my research is correct, then I am in a lost temple to the ancient god Dagon. A powerful relic is rumored to be kept in the depths of this world. Perhaps it holds the key to my escape...

Explorer's Journal, Page 2
This library seems to go on forever. I am no longer certain that there is a way out. It feels as if I am somehow reliving the same experiences, day after day, endlessly.
If I am to find an exit from this madness, I believe it will be through those obscene glowing books. There is unimaginable power in those pages, and unspeakable horror...
It seems that the spirits of ancient deities lie dormant within the books, though I know not for what reason. But their collected power must be the key to my incarceration in this labyrinth...

Explorer's Journal, Page 3
Dear God no. I didn't know what I was doing.
I have found a way out of that library, but only now do I understand its true nature. In my escape, I have opened Pandora's box.
The library is an interdimensional prison, created thousands of years ago to contain the Old Ones. How I came to be trapped there remains a mystery to me, but it is clear that the exit was never meant to be opened.
Unimaginable horrors are now spilling onto Earth because of my actions. Can they ever be contained again?

Explorer's Journal, Page 4
I may have found a solution to the evil I unwittingly unleashed upon the world. In my research, I have learned of a "Ritual of Binding" which the mystics performed to contain the Old Ones the last time they threatened Earth.
The ritual of binding is performed by reading aloud the ancient words, which seals the invaders in an infinite prison spanning unknown dimensions; and then surrendering one person to serve as the eternal guardian of the prison.
The ritual may be augmented by lighting three candles. The candles will draw the targets to the heart of the prison and lull them into slumber.
Ancient texts speak of a further step in which the guardian's duty is relieved by the use of a consecrated surrogate, but the details are lost to time.

---

From wikia.com:

There are three finals in the game. The final you get depends upon if you have lit all the candles in the Endless Library and if you have all the sacred items with you.

Bad Final
You have just to gather all three Soul Orbs, open an archdoor to the Endless Library and fail to find and lit all three candles. After performing Ritual of Binding on the third floor of the third world of the Endless Library, you leave some of the Old Ones rampage the Earth and sacrifice yourself as the new "Librarian" guardian.

You read aloud the ancient words of the ritual of binding.
The Old Ones still remaining within the boundaries of the library are trapped, and will no longer pose any threat to Earth. Yet many more of them had already escaped, and still rempage beyond the library's walls.
Having done all you could, you complete the ritual by performing the final step: surrendering yourself to remain forever in the library as its guardian.

Good Final
You have to gather all three Soul Orbs, open an archdoor to the Endless Library and find and lit all three candles. Candles are located one in the each of the worlds of the Endless Library, usually on the second floor. Candles are hidden in the rooms with no entrance from the same floor, so you have to find a way and get there from the upper floor.

After performing Ritual of Binding on the third floor of the third world of the Endless Library, the Old Ones are captured in the library and you sacrifice yourself as a library guardian.

You read aloud the ancient words of the ritual of binding.
Drawn to the candles you lit, the Old Ones stop their rampage, become quiet, and drift lethargically toward the heart of the library.
After they are again safely contained within their prison, you complete the ritual by performing the final step: surrendering yourself to remain forever in the library as its guardian.

Great Final
You have to gather all three Soul Orbs, open an archdoor to the Endless Library and find and lit all three candles. Also, you must have all three sacred items equipped. Sacred items are Holy Symbol, Sandals and Consecration Kit which are located in the shadow worlds. You can get there using Dusty Books, each is located in the hidden room in the second world of the each area. Performing the Ritual of Binding without all three sacred items will result in a good or bad final, depending on the number of candles lit.

The Explorer's Journal, Page 4 contains a mere hint on how to achieve this final. So, you can, but it is very unlikely that you complete with this final on a first run without cheating (i.e. reading this wiki).

Tip: Every sacred item occupies very useful slot for boots, kit or gear. Also, you cannot just drop boots, kit or gear in any place, you have to exchange them for something of the same type. So I think the easiest way when you find a sacred item is to grab it, leaving your current item in the shadow world, go back to the shop in the first world of the area and leave the sacred item there, exchanging it with something in the shop. Then return to the shadow world and grab your item back.

Tip: After you have cleared the Endless Library and got to the Altar of Binding, you can safely return to the start area and make a run for the shops grabbing the sacred items. As the shops are in the first worlds of every area and the worlds are already cleaned, it should be fast and easy.

After performing Ritual of Binding on the third floor of the third world of the Endless Library, the Old Ones are captured in the library and you, at last, are free!

You read aloud the ancient words of the ritual of binding.
Drawn to the candles you lit, the Old Ones stop their rampage, become quiet, and drift lethargically toward the heart of the library.
After they are again safely contained within their prison, you complete the ritual by performing the final step: placing a consecrated symbol in your stead to ward the Old Ones.
At long last, you are free of the library. And the Old Ones sleep, forever...

NewGame+
After you complete the game with any final (no matter with or without all candles lit), after watching the credits and starting a new game you will find a white orb (labelled the "Soul of the Librarian") in the center of the starting library.

If you grab it, the following text will appear:

Welcome to New Game+ !
Collecting this soul has activated a more challenging version of Eldritch.
The effect will wear off after you die.

The game is more harder indeed:

* fire- or poison-ball shooting enemies shoot much faster
* there are much fewer items can be found in the rooms
* the enemy hit takes two health points instead of one
* the Amulet of Destruction can be found much later in the game, etc

The NewGame+ mode will not continue if you die.

["Librarians: and the dangers they pose to a utopian society" appears on screen]
["No games???" appears on screen]
[scene opens with a male student playing a Flash game on the computer in the school library, when another male student (pretending to be the librarian) walks in]
LIBRARIAN: Excuse me, I ... What the fuck are you doing?
MALE STUDENT 1: Uh, I'm playing games ... it's educational!
LIBRARIAN: I don't care if it's educational, this is social studies class!
[cut to another shot of the librarian yelling at the student]
LIBRARIAN: What the hell, this isn't ... you're not supposed to have fun! This is social studies class!
[he slaps the student on top of the head]
LIBRARIAN: Get down and do twenty push-ups right now!
[the student starts doing push-ups, as the librarian sits on his back]
LIBRARIAN: Two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine--
[cut to the student getting up off the floor]
LIBRARIAN: Get your ass up and go to the principal's office!
MALE STUDENT 1: Why?
LIBRARIAN: And tell him, if he doesn't give you detention, I'm showing all the faculty the pictures of him at the party last night! Now go!
[the student runs off crying, then cut to a group of five students sitting at a table in the library, when the librarian enters the scene]
LIBRARIAN: [yelling] What the hell are you doing?!
FEMALE STUDENT 1: [quietly] We were just studying.
LIBRARIAN: Yeah, just studying my ass! Do you realize what you've done?
FEMALE STUDENT 1: Not really.
LIBRARIAN: You put a fifth chair at a four-chair desk!
FEMALE STUDENT 2: So, who gives a crap?
LIBRARIAN: Because it's my library! I do, and everybody has to do what I say, no matter how ridiculous it may seem! Now put the chair back where it belongs!
MALE STUDENT 2: But then where will I sit?
LIBRARIAN: At the table with the chair!
[he points at a smaller desk on the other side of the room]
MALE STUDENT 2: But then how will I study?
LIBRARIAN: Libraries aren't for studying, they're for following my rules!
[another student walks in]
MALE STUDENT 3: You're not the boss around here, the principal is ...
[he slaps the student across the face]
LIBRARIAN: Get me a Pepsi!
FEMALE STUDENT 3: Why should I do anything for you, okay? You need some Diet Pepsi!
[one of the students punches another one (who had his head down on the table, sleeping)]

[scene opens with a middle-aged man walking into the public library (as a "No Food in the Library" sign is prominently displayed on the door), as he walks past the information desk where an elderly female librarian (grey hair, glasses, beige sweater) is typing at her computer]
[cut to Gary placing his backpack on a nearby table, as he opens it up and takes out a bag of Nacho Cheese Doritos]
[cut to a closeup of the librarian, as she looks up with an angry look on her face]
[cut to Gary sitting and reading a book, as he's about to open the bag of Doritos, when the librarian grabs it and walks off]
[cut to another shot of Gary sitting at the same desk (except he is wearing headphones and now has a bag of Cool Ranch Doritos), as he reaches over to open the bag but doesn't notice the librarian walk up and take the bag away]
[cut to a closeup of Gary's face, as he's about to put a chip into his mouth, when the librarian reaches in from off camera and flicks it out of his hand]
[cut to Gary walking up to a bookcart marked "Used Books $1.00," as he grabs a book and walks off]
[cut to Gary placing the book (and a dollar bill) at the front desk for the librarian, then cut to Gary's home as he uses an X-Acto Knife to cut out a hole in each page of the book]
[cut to Gary placing the now hollowed-out book in the return slot ("Print Materials Only") of the library]
[cut to the librarian reshelving the book]
[cut to Gary taking the book off the shelf, then opening it to reveal a bag of Nacho Cheese Doritos concealed within]
[the Doritos logo appears, then cut to the librarian sitting in her office with her feet up on the desk (surrounded by confiscated Doritos bags), as she takes a bite of one of the chips, then turns to the camera and smiles]

From videocontestnews.com:

Did you know that there's no wikipedia entry for Doritos' Crash the Super Bowl contest? Is that weird or what? Everything has a Wikipedia entry. For God's Sake, the Nickelodeon show "Hey Dude" which ran from 1989 to 1991 has a massive Wikipedia page complete with episode guides. (I clicked the "Random Article" button on Wikipedia and the Hey Dude entry was the first one to pop up) Over the last two and half year's I've written dozens of articles about "The Crash" and I've had to spend a lot of time searching the web for information. It would be really helpful if some nerd out there would just compile a bunch of facts about the contest and post them online.

Oh wait....I guess if anyone is nerdy enough to do something like that it's me. It took me a lot of googling but I've found a ton of data about The Crash and I will list it all in this single post. This is going to be just basic stuff like who made the finals, who won, how many entries where received, etc. Please be aware that if you are actually interested in this type of data that pretty much means you are as big of a nerd as I am.

Let's start with the number of entries the contest has received over the years. Most of these numbers come from old articles or press releases that were put out by Fritolay:

NUMBER OF TOTAL CTSB ENTRIES BY YEAR:
2006/2007 Installment: 1,065 Doritos entries.
2007/2008: No commercial contest that season.
2008/2009 Installment: 1961 Doritos Entries.
2009/2010 Installment: 4023 Doritos Entries
2010/2011 Installment: 4,260 Doritos Entries.
2011/2012 Installment: 6,100 Doritos Entries.

Note: In 2010, Pepsi Max was also part of the Crash the Super Bowl contest. Pepsi Max received 1,460 submissions. But the Pepsi Max "Crash" was pretty much a totally different contest run by a different company and a different set of judges. So for the rest of this article I'm just going to focus on the Doritos contest.

Pretty amazing, huh? This contest has just grown like crazy over the years. Bet you're kicking yourself right now for not entering back in 2006. So it looks like the number of submissions doubled after the 2008/2009 Crash the Super Bowl contest. But why? Probably because the winner of the 2009 contest, Free Doritos scored the #1 spot on the USA Today ad meter poll and the guys who made the ad, Joe and Dave Herbert won a million bucks. After people saw that it was possible for an "average joe" to win the million dollar bonus the contest just blew up.

But this raw data doesn't tell the whole story. If you've entered past installments of the CTSB contest you know that every year, Doritos gets HUNDREDS of duplicate entries. I think the rules say that you can submit up to 10 versions of your commercial. And some people just uploaded their video 10 times. Some probably did it because they were unsure if the initial upload worked. But I think others used to do it just because they thought maybe it would improve their chances.

The repeat entries used to be really annoying. It seemed like for every 100 submissions I watched, at least 20 would be repeats. But fortunately, this year Doritos finally took measures to keep the duplicates out of the video gallery. I'd estimate that only 5% of this season's submissions were repeats. So just for the fun of it let's adjust the numbers to account for all the duplicates. I'll deduct 20% from each total except for 2011. For this year's total I'll only deduct 5%.

ESTIMATED NUMBER OF ORIGINAL CTSB ENTRIES:
2006/2007 Installment: 852 Unique Doritos entries.
2008/2009 Installment: 1569 Unique Doritos Entries.
2009/2010 Installment: 3,220 Unique Doritos Entries.
2010/2011 Installment: 3,408 Unique Doritos Entries.
2011/2012 Installment: 5,795 Unique Doritos Entries.

Now let's do a little light math. Each year, Doritos picks 5 finalists. (Except in the 09-10 contest when they picked 6 finalists) So it's easy to calculate a contestant's chance of making the finals.

ESTIMATED CHANCES OF A VIDEO MAKING THE CTSB FINALS, BY YEAR:
2006/2007 Installment: 1 in 170.
2008/2009 Installment: 1 in 313.
2009/2010 Installment: 1 in 536.
2010/2011 Installment: 1 in 681.
2011/2012 Installment: 1 in 1,159.

Anyone who has watched a few random CTSB entries knows that most of the submissions Doritos receives every year just aren't that great. But there's no possible way to estimate what a filmmaker's odds are if he makes a GOOD submission. So I won't even try. Let's move on to a list of who has won the contest over the years. I'll include the Pepsi Max Crash the Super Bowl finalists just for the heck of it. You can find all of these commercials on the official Crash the Super Bowl channel on youtube.

[cut back to Christopher speaking directly to the camera]

[cut to another male librarian ("Paul Sharpe, Head of Access Services") speaking directly to the camera]
PAUL SHARPE: My name's Paul Sharpe, I am the head of access services here at the Uhm-Sell libraries.

[cut to another female student in the library, speaking directly to the camera]
FEMALE STUDENT 2: They spend time, like hours, with you. Help you figure out the right resources for my paper. That's really awesome.
[cut back to Paul speaking directly to the camera]
PAUL SHARPE: Uh, we're definitely a place of social interaction. Uh, a place of business. A place of learning, of course, but ... uh, we're constantly evolving.
[cut back to Clinton speaking directly to the camera]
CLINTON BERRY: As librarians, our roles are changing all the time, and anything that we can do to sort of get feedback ... uh, so if you're looking for a librarian to hug, I'm your guy! So, catch me in the library!

From umsl.edu:

When was the last time you hugged a librarian? Last week? Last year? Never?

Today is International Hug a Librarian Day and there's really no excuse for the campus community at the University of Missouri–St. Louis to ignore the men and women who have saved our academic lives more than once. Approach your favorite librarian cautiously, some of them are quite introverted, according to Christopher Dames, interim dean of libraries. They may appreciate a simple handshake.

Pick your favorite library: the Thomas Jefferson Library, the main library on North Campus; the St. Louis Mercantile Library in the Thomas Jefferson Library and the Ward E. Barnes Education Library on South Campus. Join the rest of the library lovers of the world and hug away!

From wired.com:

Hug Your Librarian
By Laura Grace Weldon
03.01.12

This may or may not be International Hug a Librarian Day. There's some confusion online but then, librarians are too busy to keep up with fan clubs. These human search engines don't just find information, they also review, organize, assess, explain, figure out, calm small children, put up displays, run programs, read aloud, expand collections, help those of us who need to hone down an area of interest, and much more. Why limit librarian love to one day?

There are at least nine reasons to adore libraries and the professionals who make these places adoration-worthy, so we probably need a more than just a Hug A Librarian Day. Perhaps a commemorative week or better yet, month.

Here are some ways to celebrate:

* Surprise your favorite librarian with a hand-written thank you note.
* Join the GeekMom book club.
* Make gingerbread superhero cookies (because librarians are our heros).
* Read This Book Is Overdue!: How Librarians and Cybrarians Can Save Us All.
* Bring flowers, good coffee beans, homemade cookies, or a tray of fresh fruit for your librarians to enjoy.
* Indulge in some banned book projects.
* Wear an I Read Banned Books Bracelet.
* Cover a tote bag with quotes from your favorite literary characters.
* Vote yes for library levies.
* Start your own tiny library.
* Surprise your favorite librarian with a gift. Consider a certificate for dinner, theater performance, massage, or to use at a locally owned store.
* Watch campy librarian action movies.
* Attend library programs.
* Shape snacks that look like books out of fruit leather, honey, and chocolate.
* Organize your book collection into a lending library using book pockets and library cards, perhaps putting your stamp on each volume with a custom book embosser. Or use an all-in-one library kit.
* Make easy felt book covers, a more complex quilted composition book cover, or heck, try bookbinding.
* Plan an Edible Book Festival.
* Admit you're a Book Zombie.
* Read aloud books such as Librarian on the Roof! A True Story, The Boy Who Was Raised by Librarians, and The Librarian of Basra: A True Story from Iraq.
* Oh, and give your librarian a hug!
