Case Study No. 2082: Phyrexian Librarian

Awesome skills for Unhinged MTG play!
3:22
One card in Unhinged requires that you balance a card every turn, adding one more every time on your body. Should you drop any cards, the card is placed out of the game play area and into a 'card graveyard'. He wins with 5 cards on him during one round match of three. This happens at an awesome gaming store in Ft. Wayne, Indiana called "White Knight Games".

[scene opens with two people playing a game of "Magic: The Gathering" (a "Phyrexian Librarian" card has been pulled, so one of the players is balancing three cards from his deck on his right arm)]
CAMERAMAN: [from off camera] Dude, you are going to be on YouTube tonight!
[everyone watching the match laughs]
CAMERAMAN: [from off camera] The most awesome "Unhinged" tournament ever!
[they continue playing]
CAMERAMAN: [from off camera] And the one card is requring him to hold those three on his arm ...
[they continue playing, as the one player writes something down with his left hand (so the cards on his right arm don't fall or touch each other)]
CAMERAMAN: [from off camera] Now that is epic pro! Still untouched ... unmoved on his arm.
[they continue playing, as the one player adds another card on top of his right hand]
CAMERAMAN: [from off camera] Oh, he's going for four! Oh, now he's going on!
[they continue playing]
CAMERAMAN: [from off camera] Uh oh ... one's falling, oh no.
[they continue playing]
PLAYER 1: Can I, can I go for five?
PLAYER 2: Yeah, try it.
CAMERAMAN: [from off camera] Uh oh, uh oh, he's going for five!
[he pulls another card, then places it on top of his head]
CAMERAMAN: [from off camera] Nice, he's going pro!
[they continue playing ... but the one player eventually loses, then sighs and lets the cards fall]
CAMERAMAN: [from off camera] Aww!

From wikipedia.org:

Phyrexia is one of several fictional planes featured in the storyline and cards from the trading card game Magic: The Gathering. It is often called the final Hell for artifacts, or simply The Nine Hells. The plane itself appears to be based on Dante Alighieri's Inferno.

Geography
Phyrexia is an artificial plane formed from nine hollow spheres, each darker and more unpleasant than the last.

The spheres are each distinctly different from each other:

* The first sphere, the surface, is a mechanical parody of nature. A soot and smog streaked sky lowers over a broad, dusty plain spotted with clumps of oily trees and rusting remains of tormented artifacts. Unimaginably large furnaces throw ash and fire into the skies. Water in the streams is slick with oil. Although appearing to be a complete, natural ecosystem, the sphere is in fact composed entirely of machines and semi-magical constructs. Most notable are the Dragon Engines, which are both organic and mechanical warbeasts in the form of dragons.
* The second sphere is composed of the debris of the first, and smokestacks from lower levels. It lies under a ceiling of twisted beams and metal structures. It is an ashen waste filled with broken machinery. The only light and a hellish heat come from vast, smoke-grimed chimneys. This sphere also contains ammunition dumps which are the size of several large Dominarian cities.
* The third sphere is a virtually impassable tangle of pipes and ducts filled with horrors. It contains spatial distortions that prevent planeswalking to the lower spheres.
* The fourth sphere houses great furnaces, and the facility where new phyrexians are born/constructed. Most phyrexians live on this sphere
* The fifth sphere is home to the Boiling Sea of Glistening Oil, a corrupt substance that is the Phyrexian equivalent of blood. It is also home to a massive steam creature.
* The sixth sphere houses the chambers of Yawgmoth's Inner Circle of praetors and minions. As Yawgmoth himself is largely imprisoned within the ninth sphere, it is they who see his will done.
* The seventh sphere is known as the "Punishment Sphere," and is the closest thing to hell seen in Magic continuity. Those who defy Yawgmoth's will are tortured here for millennia. This sphere is inhabited by Phyrexian Gremlins and Yawgmoth Demons. Phyrexian Gremlins are short, hairy, ebon beings which serve as semi-intelligent servants. They evince an extreme excitement at the prospect of destroying artifacts or artificers.
* The eighth sphere is described as 'pure energy'.
* The ninth sphere is the Sanctum of Yawgmoth, a place where he controls reality itself. At least, reality in the confines of Phyrexia.

Inhabitants
The first stage of a Phyrexian lifecycle is the Newt. Newts are descended from the Thran, but have been bred to be genderless, among other things. Newts are grown in vats, from which they emerge in a fully adult state.

Once a Newt emerges, it is usually put through the process of Compleation, wherein most of its normal body parts are removed and given mechanical replacements. Organic weapons like stingers and venom sacs are often implanted as well.

Many Phyrexian soldiers are Compleat so thoroughly that they no longer resemble humans in the slightest. Generally speaking, the most heavily modified Phyrexians are also the most highly regarded, because destructive capability is valued above almost all else. For proof of this, look at the Phyrexian General, Tsabo Tavoc.

Phyrexians' most important values are efficiency and the search for perfection. One card says "Phyrexia wastes nothing. Its food chain is a spiraling cycle". Another says "Everything will find its use in Phyrexia. Eventually." The character Xantcha often repeats the phrase "waste not, want not", which is one of the first lessons taught to newts.

Phyrexians can be divided into the following categories (Take note, however, that these categories might overlap. Most Phyrexians are partly mechanical and partly undead at the same time, and all of them are certainly horrific.)

* Sleeper Agents--Sleeper agents are designed to spy on other planes, and gather information before other phyrexians come to invade. Usually they are newts that have not been completed. They can resemble males or females but not children. They are not always aware that they are phyrexians. Xantcha and K'rrik were sleeper agents.
* Minions -- Minions of Phyrexia serve a variety of roles including spies, assassins, shock troops, and priests. Such examples include the Priest of Gix, Sleeper Agent, Phyrexian Infiltrator, and Phyrexian Slayer.
* Undead--Reanimated corpses. Creatures such as the Monitor, Unworthy Dead, Reaper, Scuta and Bloodstock are examples of the various skeletons and zombies that make up this category. These creatures are particularly noxious; some even have the capability to instantly kill living creatures that come into contact with them.
* Carriers--Biomechanical constructs bred for the sole purpose of spreading Phyrexian engineered plagues. The Denouncer, Debaser, Defiler and Plaguelord are members of this type. All of them are suicide bombers, self-destructing to release clouds of highly infectious plague spores.
* Mechanical Constructs--Although most Phyrexians are partly mechanical, these particular constructs are completely mechanical. These are war machines meant to completely crush any enemy forces that survive the various biohazardous attacks that the Phyrexians employ. These unthinking monsters range from the medium-sized War Beast and Hulk to the enormous Colossus. The largest inhabitant of Phyrexia save for Yawgmoth himself, the Dreadnought, is also mechanical. Another mechanical construct would be the Dragon Engine.
* Horrors--Monstrous creations (perhaps combinations of the above three categories) that are horrific beyond description. These are the most difficult Phyrexians to control (as opposed to the blindly obedient mechanical constructs) and can cause serious damage to both allied and enemy alike. The Rager, Witch Engine, Plague Spitter, Devouring Strossus, Gargantua and Negator are examples of Horrors.
* Knights--This category is one that is based more on role than physical construction and is composed of certain Phyrexians who are more than simple killing machines. These Phyrexians still possess human-like intellect and will, though these are subservient to Yawgmoth. There are at least three separate "Orders" of Knights in Yawgmoth's service: The Eastern Paladins, devoted to the extermination of natural life; the Western Paladins, devoted to the annihilation of non-Phyrexian forms of society; and the Order of Yawgmoth, which is the Phyrexian "royal guard." Another Phyrexian knight is the Sanguine Guard.
* Demons -- The highest court held in Phyrexia, these creatures are remnants of the Thran that converted to Yawgmoth's court long before the fall of the dynasty. They have fully "compleated", or evolved, into creatures of no flesh. These creatures include both the demon Gix, who maintained a cult following of his own on Dominaria during his stirring of the Brothers' War, and another lesser known Thran dubbed Croag, who plotted with Davvol (the first evincar of Rath) to eliminate Urza Planeswalker during the initial stages of the Bloodlines project.

From wikipedia.org:

Macho Women with Guns (MWWG) is a comedy role-playing game created by Greg Porter and published by Blacksburg Tactical Research Center (BTRC). (A D20 System version of the game is also available from Mongoose Publishing.) Nominally a science-fiction game, it parodies both action films and other role-playing games.

Setting
Macho Women with Guns is set in a near-future America where society has collapsed due to the misdeeds of the Reagan Administration. Taking advantage of the earthly chaos, Satan has dispatched his female minions, the Batwinged Bimbos From Hell, to rebuild society in a form he approves of. The Vatican has responded to Satan's plans by dispatching its elite group of warrior nuns, The Sisters of Our Lady of Harley-Davidson to combat the bimbos. The two groups of women compete (sometimes violently) to rebuild civilization by vanquishing post-apocalyptic menaces and male chauvinism.

Dimensional warps caused by the conflict have opened connections to a series of parallel universes, each of which represents a different genre environment, such as fantasy or science fiction. These universes, along with Earth, constitute a campaign setting that Macho Women with Guns calls The Machoverse.

Player characters in Macho Women with Guns are statuesque females with a penchant for revealing clothing, who engage in combat with otherworldly menaces (like the Puppies of Tindalos), satirical representations of male chauvinism, such as Drunken Frat Boys, and occasionally each other. (Non-female opponents in the game are usually referred to as critters.)

System
Character generation in Macho Women with Guns uses a character point system. Each character begins with 75 points which are used to buy attributes and skills. The five attributes (Strength, Dexterity, Macho, Looks, and Health) are rated on an open-ended scale with a minimum starting score of eight. Skills are ranked by the bonus they provide to task resolution roles, i.e. "+1", "+2", etc.

MWWG uses a roll of three six-sided dice for all task resolutions, including combat. The base chance of a character succeeding at an action is determined by the character's score in a relevant attribute (usually Strength or Dexterity), adjusted by situational modifiers (including skills) determined by the gamemaster. The player of that character then rolls three six-sided dice -- If the sum of the dice is less than or equal to the adjusted number, the character succeeds at the action. Most die roles in Macho Women with Guns use six-sided dice, but four-sided and three-sided dice may be needed for some rolls.

A signature mechanic of Macho Women with Guns is the Macho Attack, which allows a player character to intimidate their enemies with a display of raw charisma by making a roll against his character's Macho score. The opponent then rolls against his Macho score (with modifiers determined by the player character's roll). An opponent who fails his Macho roll is temporarily stunned by the player character, and unable to act.

History
The original Macho Women with Guns was designed in 1988 by Greg Porter, owner of BTRC, in a period of less than two-weeks. The 12-page booklet was published in August of that year, and became BTRC's most popular product.

The following year, BTRC released two supplements written by Porter. The first, Batwinged Bimbos From Hell (ISBN 0-943891-08-6), introduced key background details of the Machoverse, as well as rules for aerial movement. The second supplement, Renegade Nuns on Wheels (ISBN 0-943891-07-8), featured more information about the campaign setting, and rules for ground vehicles. Especially in the vehicular damage system, it parodied the flow chart-approach of Renegade Legion's Interceptor.

BTRC also released a slightly-revised version of the original rule booklet (ISBN 0-943891-06-X), which included cross-references to the new supplements. Although the inside cover of the revised booklet identifies it as "Second Edition, May 1989", there were no major rules changes. (Few, if any, gamers acknowledge this booklet as a different edition.) Porter's collection of adventures for MWWG, The Final Chapter (Part One) (ISBN 0-943891-12-4) was published in 1990.

MACHO LIBRARIANS WITH GUNS
"STEP AWAY from the Reference Desk -- slowly..."

Optional character class for Macho Women with Guns
Rules sources marked as follows:
OR - original rules, MT - Matt's rules, TM - The Mav's rules, MM - both Matt and Mav

CLASS: MACHO LIBRARIANS with Guns (TM)

These ladies might have gone on to be typical Macho Women were it not for one distinguishing attribute: Intelligence. Operating under the joint authority of the National Library Association and U.S. Special Operations Command, these gun-toting librarians lead a never ending fight to promote literacy, recover overdue materials, and oppose censorship.

ASSETS: The only character class to possess a quantifiable level of intelligence. When a Macho Librarian tries to rely on her looks and fails, she can try again using her intelligence.

LIABILITIES: Required to have a minimum of 11 in Intelligence. Looks must be lower than Intelligence. Required to select at least one Weird Library Disadvantage.

BUYING your character: Macho Librarians start with 75 points like all other classes. Select scores for Strength, Dexterity, Looks, Macho, Health AND Intelligence. The Intelligence attribute must be at least 11 and the Looks attribute must be a lower value.

ATTRIBUTE, Intelligence: This special attribute is ONLY available to Macho Librarians*.

*(This attribute might, in very rare circumstances, be acquired by other character classes after several years of college. However, no amount of education will allow a Bat-winged Bimbo to have an Intelligence level greater than 1. Yes, 1.)

SPECIAL "Brains Over Beauty" roll: Any time a Macho Librarian fails a Looks roll, she may immediately attempt a second roll against her Intelligence attribute. A successful roll is treated the same as if the initial Looks roll had been successful.

Before selecting skills you must determine which Library Department your character was attached to before assignment to NLA-US SOCOM. Roll 2d6 to determine your Department as follows: 2:Children's, 3:Bookmobile, 4:Reference, 5-7:Circulation, 8-9:Audio-Visual, 10-11:Technical Services, 12:Administration.

SKILLS: Select skills and disadvantages as with other character classes with the following exceptions: Macho Librarians must have AT LEAST one Weird Library Disadvantage (defined as any disadvantage which is available only to Macho Librarian characters, whether or not limited to a certain Department.) Certain designated skills, advantages and disadvantages may only be selected by librarians from a certain Library Department.

From biosector01.com:

"Tehutti's always here, Toa 'Whenua'. He spends his whole life down with the exhibits."
- An Onu-Matoran Guard, Mystery of Metru Nui

Tehutti, temporarily Tehuti while on Mata Nui, is an ambitious Onu-Matoran native to Metru Nui and one of the Matoran who knew the location of a Great Disk.

Metru Nui
Tehutti was an Archivist who worked alongside Whenua, before Whenua was transformed into a Toa. Tehutti came to know of the location of a Great Disk, which proved to be dangerous to him, because as a result of his knowledge, the Po-Matoran Ahkmou successfully attempted to lure him into a trap.

He had been told that there was a Nui-Jaga to be delivered that day from a Ga-Matoran named Vhisola. He was suspicious of this, as Nui-Jaga lived in Po-Metru, but nevertheless, was quite excited to receive the Nui-Jaga. Upon heading to the dock where all live exhibits from other Metru were shipped, he found that what he had been told was not true. He then headed down to one of the sublevels, using a ladder. However, the ladder was broken, and he fell into a dangerous sublevel. Whenua, who was searching for the Onu-Matoran, followed Tehutti's steps, and freed Tehutti from the rubble that he was trapped under. Later on, when Tehutti told Whenua and Nuju where the disk was located, he was caught by Rorzakh and fell prey to their Staffs of Presence. Whenua and Nuju left him with Ehrye on a level he was not familiar with, so both would be safe but unable to run away, and descended to the sublevel where the Disk was hidden. Later, while they were searching for the Ko-Metru Great Disk, Tehutti was struck by a Keerakh's Staff of Confusion, causing him to lose his sense of time and space and believe he was cataloging a Fikou exhibit in the Archives. Because of this, the two Matoran were left behind while the Toa looked for the disk.

After the Toa Metru found the Great Disks, they and the Matoran traveled to the Great Furnace, in search of the King Root of the Morbuzakh. However, the group was attacked by Morbuzakh vines before they could enter. Tehutti, having learned of it in the Archives, showed the other five Matoran how to merge with himself to form a Matoran Nui. The Matoran Nui kept the Morbuzakh at bay, allowing the Toa Metru to access the Great Furnace. After some time, the Matoran Nui split apart, returning the six Matoran to their original forms.

After leaving the other five Matoran from the Great Furnace, Tehutti was lured by Makuta Teridax into coming with the other Matoran to the Coliseum, and the Vahki imprisoned him in a Matoran Pod. He was later freed by the Toa Metru on Mata Nui.

Mata Nui
Due to his confinement in a Matoran Sphere, Tehutti was physically shrunken and weakened and he also forgot his memories of life on Metru Nui. Nevertheless, in the beginning years of the Dark Time, he assisted in the construction of Onu-Koro, under Turaga Whenua's instruction, taking materials from Airships used in the Great Rescue.

On Mata Nui, Tehutti was re-named Tehuti and given a replacement Kanohi Kakama. He worked in the Great Mine in Onu-Wahi as a Miner. He temporarily vacated Onu-Koro with the other Matoran when the Bohrok attacked. Tehutti was rebuilt after the defeat of the Bohrok-Kal. He was evacuated from Onu-Koro with the other Matoran during the Rahkshi attack.

Return to Metru Nui
Tehutti later joined in the creation of Boats to return to Metru Nui. Upon learning of the past, he changed his name back to "Tehutti." He and the other Matoran then underwent a joint effort to rebuild the city, which had suffered damage. He temporarily stopped his work of reconstruction on order of Jaller, to force the Turaga to reveal where the Toa Nuva had gone, but he eventually got back to work.

Tehutti and the other remaining Matoran later left Metru Nui to depart for Spherus Magna, after the Great Spirit Robot was incapacitated

Abilities and Traits
Tehutti always wanted a new exhibit to mark his name on, and his hard-headedness often caused him to overlook what was the right thing to do, so long his name was put on a new item in the Archives. Tehutti had no definite purpose for the Great Disk, except maybe to put it on exhibit and achieve recognition for his work.

Like all Onu-Matoran, Tehutti could see in the dark, and was stronger than Matoran of other Elements.

Tools
Tehutti generally used a teleportation Kanoka, code 685, to move around the complex Archives.

Set Information
Tehutti was released in early 2004 as one of the six "small sets." Tehutti wore a black Kanohi Huna with silver markings on the top. The set also included a Kanoka launcher and a glow-in-the-dark Onu-Metru Kanoka disk with a special code on it. This could be entered at BIONICLE.com for Kanoka Club points.

Pieces from this set could also be combined with pieces from the Vhisola and Ehrye sets to form a Kavinika model.

From wikia.com:

Tehutti was an Onu-Matoran.

History
On Metru Nui, Tehutti worked in the Archives. He had no definite purpose for the Great Kanoka Disk that he found, except maybe to put it on exhibit and achieve recognition for his work. Teridax believed his destiny to be as the Toa Metru of Earth.

Toa Whenua found him, and he told him where to find the great disk. He, Ehrye, and the two Toa Metru went to Ko-Metru. He was dazed by a Keerakh. Once Nuju found his disk, the Toa Metru united at the Temple of Mata Nui. They journied to the Great Furnace to defeat the King Root.

Tehutti merged with the other 5 Matoran into the Matoran Nui. Then he dissapeared, taken away by a Vahki, and put into a Matoran Pod.

On Mata Nui, Tehutti was awakened by the Toa Metru and lived in Onu-Koro. Tehutti was re-named Tehuti and given a replacement Kanohi Kakama for unknown reasons. His name has since been changed back. He worked in the Great Mine in Onu-Wahi.

Along with all the other Matoran, Tehutti returned to Metru Nui and helped to rebuild it until the Staff of Artahka was activated. Tehuti's name was changed back to Tehutti, and he took part in the ceremony held for Matoro.

Tehutti later migrated to Spherus Magna after the Matoran Universe was damaged in the Battle of Bara Magna.

Personality
Tehutti always wanted a new exhibit to mark his name on, quickly leading to him becoming one of Whenua's rivals. Tehutti's hard head often caused him to forget the most important purposes. He generally used a level 5 teleportation Kanoka Disk to move around the complex Archives.

Trivia
Tehutti once appeared on the cover of an archivist's magazine because he was one.

Set information
* Tehutti was released in 2004.
* Tehutti's set number is 8609.
* Tehutti has 27 pieces.

From tripod.com:

The Archives was a large facility in Onu-Metru that contained information on almost everything known to Matoran.

They contained special artifacts (like the Onu-Metru Great Disk) and various Rahi, most contained in Stasis Tubes. The lower levels of the Archives are a dangerous place where some Matoran have become lost, never to be found again. Many Rahi have also escaped their tubes in the lower levels, making it even more treacherous. An Onu-Matoran known as the Chief Archivist made major decisions concerning the Archives along with Turaga Dume. Each entrance was guarded by one guard and the doors had locks that consisted of three levers that changed their position every day. Only the guard on duty knew the combination and position of the levers. At this point, the aforementioned security has been abandoned. The Rahaga took refuge in the Archives when they came to Metru Nui with the Avohkii. Dweller was hiding in the Archives, waiting for a chance to attack Takanuva.

During the Great Cataclysm, the Archives were badly damaged, freeing almost all of the captured Rahi. The Archives were then repaired to their former glory with the Staff of Artakha, and the Rahaga helped replace and recapture missing Rahi before transforming back into the Toa Hagah. The Matoran hid in the Archives to get away from the Rahkshi during the Destiny War. Toa Tuyet was found there by Macku, who was joined by Hafu and Kapura. Tuyet thought a while about her journey; then Tren Krom arrived in Lewa's body. They later slipped out of the Archives.

The Archives were later abandoned along with all other locations of the Matoran Universe and its exhibits were moved to a second Archives, built on the planet Spherus Magna.

Cards Against Librarianship, the starter deck, is here. Please play and give feedback so it can be as much fun as possible.

You can download the deck here:

Cards Against Librarianship Answer Cards (371)
Cards Against Librarianship Question Cards (71)

*Huge thanks to Thomas Maluck, Carl Hess, and various folks on Twitter and the ALATT Facebook group for contributing card suggestions.

*There are many different forms of librarianship, and while I tried to keep the deck mostly general, I have mainly worked on the public-facing side of public libraries and I'm certain that's reflected. I took card suggestions from folks with different experiences, but if, due to lack of niche knowledge and after a simple Google search, I couldn't understand why they were funny, I left them out. I highly welcome and will link to specialty "Expansion Packs"--for ex, "Archivists' Expansion Pack"--as long as the cards in them are phrased to be compatible with as many of the cards in this starter deck as possible. Blank cards are provided above; if you want them to match exactly (not necessary), import each blank into PicMonkey or something similar and type in Arial.

*Creating question and answer cards that are compatible in a maximum number of situations was more challenging than I expected. For this reason, a few of the cards included in the preview versions posted here earlier did not make the final deck. Suggestions in this arena are welcome, too, as well as feedback as to the playability and compatibility of the starter deck. Please send them to elloyd74[at]gmail.com with the subject line "Cards Against Librarianship" (I sometimes miss notifications of comments on this blog).

*If you make an especially hilarious combination that you want to share, please do so on Twitter with the hashtag #CardsAgainstLibrarianship (or in the comments below, if you're not on Twitter).

IMPORTANT INFO: Cards Against Librarianship is inspired by Cards Against Humanity, and, as in CAH, you will find cards in CAL that refer to sexuality and other topics generally considered taboo in the workplace. If you've never played CAH, you might take a peek at the content of their cards before deciding if CAL is a game you want to look at and play with colleagues (or even alone). As a general rule, CAL is tamer--I didn't go anywhere near CAH's infamous "Toni Morrison" and "Pac-Man" cards--but what I feel comfortable including and what you feel comfortable reading may certainly differ. Using the blank cards provided above, folks can swap in their own tamer cards or raunchier cards, depending on preference.

Avalon RP
Jun. 29th, 2012 at 11:58 AM

I can't believe I'm doing this, but the idea wouldn't leave me. I thought of this the day before I left vacation after brainstorming with Records, so I only had time to upload a video now. Maybe it's crazy running 2 RP's at once, but I felt I had to do it. :)

Story: So, Avalon is a small city in England that is home to the supernatural. Mermaids, fairies, dragons, you name it, they've got it. It was designed to be a place where supernatural creatures could live in harmony without the judgement of humans. The city is run by the Council. It has five members, each one a different supernatural species. The city is relatively peaceful, but like any city, it has it's crime problems from time to time. If you have any questions about the city, just ask.
My characters are Katrina and James Clarkson (yes, I know James is the name of one the characters that Benedict Cumberbatch plays. Sue me. I couldn't think of a better name). She's a witch and she's a wizard, although Katrina is special because on her mom's side of the family, there's a little bit of mermaid genetics in there as well. They can do a variety of spells, but each of them have a type of magic that they're comfortable with. Katrina naturally leans towards water-type spells while James's specialty is creating illusions. Katrina is a junior in high school and James is a member of the Council. The Clarksons are a pretty well-to-do family, but Katrina and James are the social outcasts of the family.

Personalities:
Katrina, known as Kitty to those close to her, is a goody-goody two-shoe, to say the least. She's a good girl, almost never gets into trouble, gets good grades in school, practices her magic dutifully. She's a kind person, but is cautious when it comes to trying something new. She's afraid to take risks and just jump into something. She prefers to think things through. She is a very loyal friend though, and if she sees someone she loves upset, she will do her best to cheer them up. Art is a passion of hers. She loves drawing and painting. She loves her uncle to death and is very close to him. She's not very open to romance, mainly because she has no idea what to expect of herself. Her uncle was infamous for having a relationship with another boy when he was in highschool, and since she is so much like her uncle, Katrina wonders if she'll be interested in girls as well as boys. She hates the rest of her family and thinks they're a bunch of pricks, a hatred she shares with her uncle.

James, known as Jim to those he's close to, is a serious guy and it usually takes a special person to make him smile. But once somebody manages to do that, James will be a loyal friend to them. He's a pretty smart guy. He was known for having the best grades in the class when he was in school. He plays the violin and often turns to it when he's upset or needs to think. He loves Katrina with all of his heart and will do his best to make her happy. Due to a spell gone wrong, he now has a disease that puts his body in unbearable pain from time-to-time, rendering him helpless. He always used to deal with it alone, but during the past few years, Katrina has been taking care of him and he found that he actually liked having somebody with him. He's not very open to romance right now since he has his job and niece to focus on. He was very close to Katrina's father. He was the only family member he truly loved. Once he died, he's felt even more at odds with the rest of the family ever since.

Powers:

Both Katrina and James know a variety of spells being a witch and wizard. Since Katrina has a bit of mermaid mixed into her, she feels more comfortable with water-based spells than anything else. She's known for going to the ocean whenever she needs to be alone. James specializes in illusions, which can be helpful or confusing. When facing an enemy, it can disorient them. But he just prefers to use it to get his thoughts laid out visually in front of him so he can think better.

RULES:
1. Any video editing program is allowed. No slideshows.
2. Auditions must be at least 30 seconds long. In the description, please put up information about your character: their name, what species they are, what job they have (if they're a kid, you can just say they're a student), what powers they have, their backstory, etc.

COBY: [from off camera] Welcome to a Series Ten review on the Coby Creator show. This time, it is the Librarian, and the librarian has a mug which says "Shhh!"
[the reviewer reaches in from off camera and turns the figure to show the white mug in its hand]
COBY: [from off camera] Because she is in the library! And she is reading a book called "Oranges and Peaches" ...
[the reviewer reaches in from off camera and snaps the large brown book accessory open]
COBY: [from off camera] And the book opens, like the laptop that we got in Series Seven.
[the reviewer closes the book and turns the figure back towards the camera]
COBY: [from off camera] And that ... them legs are cheerleader legs, that we have got, but they're just a different color. This one is Number One, Series Ten, Collectible Minifigures. I hope you enjoyed, bye!

From lego.com:

Librarian
"Shhh!"

Books are just about the Librarian's most favorite thing in the entire world. Reading them can take you on exciting adventures in far-off lands, introduce you to new friends and cultures, and let you discover poetry, classic literature, science fiction and much more. If only everybody loved to read as much as she does, the world would be a better place ... and quieter, too!

The Librarian feels that it's extremely important to treat a book with the proper respect. You should always use a bookmark instead of folding down the corner of the page. Take good care of the dust jacket, and don't scribble in the margins. And above all else, never – ever – return it to the library late!

From thebrickblogger.com:

LEGO Collectible Minifigures 10 Librarian – with a coffee-mug and a book titled Oranges and Peaches. A Google search reveals that the book's title refers to a story about communication skills. A patron at a library comes to the reference desk and asks for a book called "Oranges and Peaches". The librarian has never heard of the book before, but does a quick search in the catalog. Nothing. A quick search on Amazon offers some possibilities, but, no. Nothing. Rather than send the patron away the librarian probes the patron for more information about the book: "Can you tell me what the book is about?" The patron says they have no idea. The librarian then asks how did they hear about the book. The patron says it was assigned by their professor for class. The librarian then asks: "Which class are you taking?" The patron says Biology. The librarian finally asks: "Could it be Darwin's Origin of Species?"

STEVEN HOOVER: Yeah, well, we've got about seven hundred of 'em coming through that door any minute ...
DAVID WILSON: Students, not zombies ...
STEVEN HOOVER: Just get in here! Shut off the lights and close the door!

ANNE JUMONVILLE: Hey Dave, do you have a second?
DAVID WILSON: Sure, what's up?
ANNE JUMONVILLE: Just a couple of things I was wondering about ...
DAVID WILSON: Yeah, what is it?
ANNE JUMONVILLE: Well, I was talking to Jason, and he said something about some zombies?
[cut to Anne and another male librarian looking at the construction work going on outside of the Coates Library]
JASON HARDIN: [shakes his head] "Construction," don't get me started! It's a "building project" ...
ANNE JUMONVILLE: It's not?
JASON HARDIN: That's the containment zone! Pinned 'em all in, right there, boom! No more zombies ...
[cut back to David's office]
DAVID WILSON: No, I don't know what that's all about. That's just, y'know, that's just Jason.
ANNE JUMONVILLE: Oh ... no zombies?
DAVID WILSON: No, we did athletes at NSO last time. Maybe that's what he's talking about.
ANNE JUMONVILLE: Well, then Amy said something about some ghosts?
DAVID WILSON: No, we don't have any of those either ... Don't, don't you have some weeding to do or something?
ANNE JUMONVILLE: Yeah, sorry ...
[she turns and leaves]
DAVID WILSON: Okay, then.
[cut to an exterior shot of the Harvard Kennedy School of Government (Cambridge MA), then inside to Steven sitting in his office when his phone rings]

DAVID WILSON: But, uh ... our little visitors are back again.
[cut back to Steven's office]
STEVEN HOOVER: What, you mean the bats on the fourth floor?
[cut back to David standing in the stacks]
DAVID WILSON: No, the girls! The dead girls?
[cut back to Steven's office]
STEVEN HOOVER: What're you worried about? You've got the swiffer!
[cut back to David standing in the stacks]
DAVID WILSON: Okay sure, it's a torch, it's a spear, I know, whatever, I don't have it!
[cut back to Steven's office]
STEVEN HOOVER: Okay, well look, you're screwed ... I, I gotta go, man. Good luck with the zombies.
[he hangs up, then cut back to David standing in the stacks]
DAVID WILSON: Oh, thanks ...
[cut to Anne walking through the stacks, when she sees two little girls standing at the end of the corridor before disappearing]
DAVID WILSON: [walking up behind her] Okay, you got me.
ANNE JUMONVILLE: What?
DAVID WILSON: Uh, yeah, we had kind of a situation last year.
[they turn and see a group of zombies approaching, one of them carrying the swiffer mop]
DAVID WILSON: I guess we found the swiffer ...
ANNE JUMONVILLE: Are those annotated bibliographies?

From trinity.edu:

NSO 2010: THE UNDEAD LIBRARY
Welcome new students! Here's a taste of what awaits you at the library during New Student Orientation (NSO).

Zombies, vampires, and other otherworldly types are taking over the library! You'll have the chance to assist in the removal of these creatures on Tuesday and Wednesday, August 24th and 25th as part of your New Student Orientation. What's in it for you, you ask? You can count on...

* Getting to know the library
* Having fun with your RM group
* Prizes for everyone
* The chance to win a $150 catered group study break

The Facts: Zombies, vampires, and other undead types are taking over the library. Not good.

The Plan: Make the library safe for humans again by working in your RM group to answer questions about different areas of the library.

Why it will work: Zombies and their friends are afraid of knowledge. Also, worksheets and new students. With all three, you can help us "release the knowledge" and reclaim the library!

And remember: The undead aren't the only challenge--you'll be competing against all the other RM groups for a grand prize.

1) Take the Online Quiz by Thursday, 8/26 @ Midnight to earn points for your RM group toward the grand prizes.

2) Come to the library during your scheduled time on Tuesday or Wednesday, August 24th or 25th, and a library staff member will get you started. You'll learn about the library while completing tasks, and earning more points for your RM group towards the grand prizes.

3) Winners will be drawn from the RM groups with the highest scores.

Although EVERYONE will get prizes, Resident Mentor groups with the most points have the chance to win the Grand Prize: A $150 catered study break for Midterms (or Finals). Your group picks where and when so you can study in style (i.e., with good food).

Being information literate is very important at Trinity, especially when it comes to zombies. After all, there's a lot of misinformation out there. Plus, zombies are not very information literate themselves. That is why they are called zombies.

In order to fend off an attack or avoid being called a zombie, you should ask yourself questions like,

* What do I really know about zombies?
* How could I find out more?
* How will I know if my information is credible?

If you do not think about these things before encountering a zombie, you will die and your brain will be eaten, possibly in reverse order. And who wants that?

From storygameproject.org:

Welcome to the "Defense of Hidgeon: The Plague Years," a game designed at the School of information of the University of Michigan and supported by a grant from the Delmas Foundation.

Andrea Jenkins, Brian Jennings, Karen Markey, Victor Rosenberg, Beth St. Jean, Fritz Swanson, and Xingxing Yao

WELCOME HOME TO YOUR ANCESTRAL ESTATES IN THE DUCHY OF HIDGEON!

The Duchy has been struck by the plague.

The Duke needs your help.

Duke Jerome hasn't taken action for an entire month because his grandfather, the Seventeenth Duke of Hidgeon, had in his day successfully dealt with the plague, and Duke Jerome was convinced that his own physician, a Florentine trained in the Holy City, would be able to assemble an equally effective plan. You see, the Duchy had been blessed, centuries ago, with a ring of scribal monasteries following the Isidorean Order. These monasteries are like no other in the entire kingdom, preserving huge catalogues of arcane knowledge wholly unknown, some say knowledge from the future. The Duke assumed that his staff could aid the physician to search through those libraries and assemble a plan of action equal to that of his noble ancestor.

But there is a catch.

The Isidorean's are obsessive about order above all else. When the Seventeenth Duke of Hidgeon had sent men to gather information from the monasteries, they were unschooled and in a panic. They simply grabbed all sorts of resources, anything they could find, and like bandits or raiders, sacked up their loot and carted it back to the fortress at the heart of the Duchy. The information was scattered and erratic. Important documents were absent, and the royal physician of that age had been forced to sort for weeks through the pile of papers. Hundreds died even after all of the necessary information had been gathered because there was just too much to be useful.

The Duke has contacted the monks, and they both have agreed that despite the emergency, action must proceed with patience. Rather than open their libraries to the ravages of another destructive and ineffective book-raid that would potentially put the current Duchy at risk, and certainly put future generations at risk, the monks have decided they will only open their collections to certified investigators.

This is why the Duke has called you.

You've been chosen, along with the few other noble houses, because of your long and patriotic service to the Duke, and because you are the few literate people in the Duchy who can be trusted to reliably sift through the material. So, you and your opponents have been sent out into the Duchy to demonstrate to each of the monasteries that one of you is the most best researcher in the Duchy.

What the Duke ultimately wishes to do is to create a new position, a new defender of the Duchy. Equal in status to the royal physician, the Duke seeks to create the office of Lord Researcher, Defender of Hidgeon.

The most skilled researcher in all the noble will take on that new role, bringing honor to their family name.

The plague must be stopped! The people must be saved! And all of this will be done through Research!

BACKSTORY

It is the middle of the 14th century, and the Black Death is racing toward the Duchy of Hidgeon. Past plagues have left Hidgeon untouched because the duke's ancestors knew the secrets to keeping it at bay, finding the right answers in the duchy's monastery libraries that are filled with huge catalogues of arcane knowledge wholly unknown, some say unknowable, to anyone outside of the Duchy. Because previous attempts at collecting information were random and haphazard, the monks who care for monastery libraries will only open them to certified researchers. You and your opponents must prove to both the monks and Duke Jerome, that you can be trusted to use monastery collections responsibly, and can quickly, efficiently, and accurately find the desired information. The first to be proven so will be named Lord Researcher, Defender of Hidgeon, winner of the game.

OBJECTIVE AND GAME SYNOPSIS

The Defense of Hidgeon is a web-administered board game. Game action takes place in the middle of the 14th century at the height of the Black Death's sweep through Europe. The objective is to be the Duchy's richest, fastest, and most accurate researcher. To accomplish this, your team must land on each of the six different monastery libraries and give correct answers at least three times to the monk's questions about the content of their particular monastery library. Correct answers earn your team a scroll. Collect all 18 scrolls and amass as much gold as you can during game play.

In addition to the monastery spaces, your game piece will probably land on game spaces that require different actions of you and your team members. For example, landing on the Fox Hunt space puts you in the Hospital space where you must remain until you complete a task that demonstrates your fitness to continue researching, landing on the Well space forces gold pieces from your hand to make a wish, and landing on the Garrison space results in a card that describes a scenario in which you lose or gain gold.

Not only should your team answer research questions correctly, you should strive to amass as much gold as possible because your team's wealth-building expertise will be assessed when game play is over. If your team is the first to land on a monastery library, you can purchase an exclusive license to use the library. Use your gold reserves to pay the duke's treasury and your team will be awarded an exclusive license for the particular library. Opponents who land on monastery spaces for which your team holds exclusive licenses must pay you a user fee. They can also challenge your team for its exclusive license. Challenges entail recommending research resources to the duke that he can use to keep the duchy's population from panicking over the dangerous encroachment of the Black Death.

You will not experience "turns" like you do with physical board games. Play the game anytime you want and for as long as you want. Do not be tempted to guess at answers to questions. Too many incorrect answers in a row will cost you precious gold. Do the research, strive for accuracy, and maximize on opportunities to become rich by earning gold, obtaining licenses, and wresting control of monastery libraries from opponents.

GETTING STARTED

When you sign onto the "Defense of Hidgeon" for the first time, you are assigned a game piece and team color. Your game piece starts its journey at the Castle of the Duke. Click on the dice and you will notice your game piece move ahead one to six game spaces. When your game piece advances, click on your game piece and the game responds with a question. Because answers to questions will not be immediately obvious, the monks have given you hints to jumpstart your research with a particular online database, catalog, or ready-reference source. Navigate to the database, catalog, or source, and do the research. Do not guess at answers, and, instead, strive for accuracy, and maximize on opportunities to become rich by earning gold, purchasing exclusive licenses to monastery libraries, and wresting control of monastery libraries from opponents. Consider waiting to challenge other teams for their exclusive licenses to monastery libraries until you have made at least one circuit through the duchy. Every time you answer a monastery library question correctly, the monks add 3 sources to your team's bibliography. Having lots of sources in your bibliography will enable you to choose the most appropriate ones that are likely to win a challenge.

CHALLENGE

If your team lands on a MONASTERY LIBRARY SPACE to which an opposing team owns an EXCLUSIVE LICENSE, your TEAM must pay a fee to the owning team and give an answer to the MONASTERY LIBRARY QUESTIONS that the monks post. If you give a correct answer, your team can take one of these two next steps: (1) roll the dice to continue your journey through the village or (2) challenge an opposing team for ownership of its EXCLUSIVE LICENSE to the library.

Here is what happens during a challenge. The challenging team issues a challenge to the owning team. If your team is the owning team, you have four days (96 hours) to respond to a challenge or lose your exclusive license to the library. In consultation with the monks and royal physician, DUKE JEROME dispatches a scenario for which he needs more information to keep the duchy's population from panicking over the dangerous encroachment of the Black Death. Instead of giving him a direct answer, your team selects the three best bibliography sources from your team's BIBLIOGRAPHY that would best prepare the duke for solving the problem.

The opposing team receives a notification on their game board's DASHBOARD that your team has challenged them. They respond by selecting the three best bibliography sources from their team's BIBLIOGRAPHY that they think will best prepare the duke for addressing the scenario.

The duke judges the two lists of bibliography sources with respect to these three criteria: (1) DISCIPLINE, (2) CREDIBILITY, and (3) AUDIENCE. If the duke rates the sources list from the challenging team higher than the sources list from the owning team, the challenging team takes ownership of the exclusive license to the library. If the duke rates sources from owning team higher than the challenging team, the owning team retains ownership of the exclusive license to the library.

When two teams are involved in a challenge for a library, other teams cannot challenge these teams for the library. The challenge must be resolved for a third team to challenge. During a challenge, all fees and taxes collected from third libraries landing on the library are collected by the original owning team.

CHALLENGE SCENARIO

When your team issues a CHALLENGE to an opponent for its EXCLUSIVE LICENSE to a monastery library, click on the link under the "Challenge(s)" heading in your BACKPACK. The game lists your bibliography sources in the right window and CHALLENGE SCENARIO in the left window. In the left window, DUKE JEROME relates a scenario pertaining to the Black Death that is affecting Hidgeon's population. The Duke needs your expertise to lighten his burden of responding to the problem. To help him, scan your team's BIBLIOGRAPHY that bears the bibliographic sources your TEAM has earned as a resulted of answering MONASTERY LIBRARY QUESTIONS correctly. Choose the 3 best bibliography sources that you think will best prepare Duke Jerome for handling the situation described in the scenario. Duke Jerome will judge the sources that you and the opposing team submit based on these three criteria: (1) DISCIPLINE, (2) CREDIBILITY, and (3) AUDIENCE.

EXCLUSIVE LICENSE

A TEAM can purchase an exclusive license to a MONASTERY LIBRARY SPACE. Having an exclusive license means that other teams that land on the monastery library space have to pay your team a fee to get MONASTERY LIBRARY QUESTIONS from the monks and earn a SCROLL. To purchase an exclusive license, your GAME PIECE must land on a monastery library space that no one else owns. Pay the licensing fee to the monks and the space is now yours.

Opponents who land on the space can CHALLENGE your team for rights to the license. Challenges entail recommending sources to DUKE JEROME that he can use to keep the duchy's population from panicking over the dangerous encroachment of the Black Death. When you purchase an exclusive license to a library, its FLAG turns the same color as your chosen TEAM COLOR.

Holding exclusive licenses is akin to filling your pockets with GOLD. The more exclusive licenses your team holds, the wealthier your team is. Because wealth is one measure of a team's expertise, you should purchase as many licenses as you can and challenge other teams for theirs.

GAME BOARD

The game board sits to the right of the tabs for the DASHBOARD and BACKPACK. It depicts the medieval Duchy of Hidgeon during the era of the Black Death in 14th century Europe.

GAME PIECES start at their journey around the duchy at the CASTLE OF THE DUKE. The main feature of the game board is its 17 MONASTERY LIBRARY SPACES. Land on one of these and earn a SCROLL for the particular library type. On almost every lane is a SAGE ADVICE space where you will have to check one or more READY REFERENCE SOURCES to answer a question about the Black Death. Landing on the FOX HUNT puts you in the HOSPITAL where you will have to perform a task to prove your fitness to be released. Landing on a GARRISON or ORACLE space puts your TEAM in a situation that affects its wealth. A visit to the DRUNKEN DWARF TAVERN SPACE or WANDERING WAY PUBLIC HOUSE SPACE usually results in revelry that leaves you a little poorer. A stay at the MANOR HOUSE space gives you a well-earned rest from game action. To leave a LIBRARY STUDY space, you will have to prove your competence at using search engines and DATABASES or pay a fine to DUKE JEROME. Landing on the WELL OF THE WHITE LADY SPACE, you toss in GOLD. Travel around the board as many times as needed for your TEAM to earn three scrolls per library type.

LIBRARY STUDY SPACE

To be an efficient researcher, it is necessary to master the many specific and arcane features of the different search engines you must use to answer questions. The game's two Library Study spaces give you an opportunity to familiarize yourself with these features. When you land on a Library Study space, click your GAME PIECE to display a free question. The question might ask you about searching Amazon (http://www.amazon.com), Mirlyn (http://mirlyn.lib.umich.edu/), Google (http://www.google.com/), or one of the many databases available through the U-M Library's Search Tools (http://searchtools.lib.umich.edu/) such as the Gale Virtual Reference Library, ISI WEB OF SCIENCE, or JSTOR. If you don't know the answer to the question, navigate your web browser to the particular search engine, take the search engine for a test drive, and experiment with it in ways that enable you to answer the question. The game penalizes wrong answers by subtracting 2 gold.

MONASTERY LIBRARY QUESTION

When you land on a MONASTERY LIBRARY SPACE, the monks post a monastery library question for you to answer. Monastery libraries specialize in six different types of sources: (1) WORLD-WIDE WEB resources (the 3 libraries of St. Isidore of Seville, (2) ENCYCLOPEDIAS (the 3 libraries of St. Thomas), (3) BOOKS (the 3 libraries of St. Jerome), EDITED WORKS (the 3 libraries of St. Catherine of Alexandria), (5) JOURNAL ARTICLES (the 3 libraries of St. Albert), and (6) CITATION DATABASES (the 2 libraries of St. Dominic de Guzman). To answer the question, you must use sources pertaining to one of these six SOURCE TYPES. For many of the questions, sources are online. Use the hints to find them. All books and edited works are on reserve at University Reserves. A few encyclopedias are on reserve and the ones that are not on reserve can be found in the reference collections of certain U-M libraries. If you do not know where or how to find something, ask a reference librarian at any U-M library for assistance.

Your TEAM earns a SCROLL for MONASTERY LIBRARY QUESTIONS it answers correctly at MONASTERY LIBRARY SPACES. Your team's objective is to earn three scrolls per library type and quickly and efficiently as possible.

MONASTERY LIBRARY SPACE

Each monastery library is a specialized gateway to knowledge about the Black Death. When you land on a monastery library space, you pay a fee from 1 to 6 GOLD for the monks to post a question. The greater the specialization of the resources in monastery libraries, the greater the fee is for questions, EXCLUSIVE LICENSES, and CHALLENGES. For example, the SOURCE TYPE of the resources at the ST. ISIDORE LIBRARIES are the least specialized so fees are the lowest; resources pertaining to CITATION DATABASES are the most specialized so fees at the ST. DOMINIC DE GUZMAN LIBRARIES are the highest.

When the game beings, click the "Roll dice" button. If your GAME PIECE lands on a monastery library space, click on it to display the question that the monks have posted for your TEAM to answer. Generating answers to questions requires your team to search, find, and read information on the WORLD-WIDE WEB, in ENCYCLOPEDIAS, BOOKS, JOURNAL ARTICLES, and other types of publications and finding aids. Answer questions correctly and your team earns a scroll for the particular library type. Your goal is to collect 3 scrolls per monastery library type.

Answering questions is not the only business you can do at monastery libraries. These options may be available to your team: (1) if no one owns an EXCLUSIVE LICENSE to the library, pay the monks for a license so that all opposing teams landing on the particular monastery library space must pay your TEAM a fee, or (2) pay the fee to the opposing team that owns the exclusive license to this particular monastery library space and answer the question correctly, or (3) pay the fee, answer the question correctly, and CHALLENGE the owning library for its exclusive license to the library. Challenges entail recommending research resources to DUKE JEROME that he can use to keep the duchy's population from panicking over the encroachment of the Black Death. Holding exclusive licenses is akin to filling your pockets with GOLD. The more exclusive licenses your team holds, the wealthier your team is. Because wealth is one measure of a team's expertise, you should purchase as many licenses as you can or challenge other teams for theirs.

After starting at the CASTLE OF THE DUKE, the first monastery libraries on which your game piece could land are the Western, Central, and Eastern libraries of ST. ISIDORE OF SEVILLE. To answer the questions the monks post at these libraries, you must use the information your team finds on the WORLD-WIDE WEB. Because formulating the questions at these libraries is easy for the monks, your team pays them only 1 gold piece for a question.

Farther down the path are the White, Brown and Sandalwood libraries of ST. THOMAS. To answer most of the questions the monks post at these libraries, you must use the information your team finds in online ENCYCLOPEDIAS through the University of Michigan Library's Search Tools (http://searchtools.lib.umich.edu/) or in print encyclopedias in the reference department of one of the two-dozen libraries at the U-M. Formulating questions is a little harder for the monks so your team pays 2 gold pieces for a question.

Even farther down the path are the Eastern, Western, and Shaded Oracular Libraries of ST. JEROME. To answer the questions the monks post at these libraries, you must use the information your team finds in BOOKS through the U-M Library's Mirlyn catalog (http://mirlyn.lib.umich.edu/). Your team pay 3 gold pieces for a question.

Past the halfway point on the GAME BOARD are the Green, Blue, and Gold Libraries of ST. CATHERINE OF ALEXANDRIA. To answer the questions the monks post at these libraries, you must use the information your team finds in EDITED WORKS including conference proceedings through the U-M's Mirlyn catalog ( http://mirlyn.lib.umich.edu/). Formulating the questions is harder for the monks so your team pays 4 gold pieces for a question.

Near the end of the path on the GAME BOARD are the Rook House, River House, and Foothills Libraries of ST. ALBERT. Here the monks will post questions that your team answers by searching JOURNAL-ARTICLE DATABASES that are accessible through the U-M Library's Search Tools (http://searchtools.lib.umich.edu/). Your team pays 5 gold for a question.

On the home stretch are Black and Silver Libraries of ST. DOMINIC DE GUZMAN. To answer the questions the monks post, your team must search the CITATION DATABASE called the ISI WEB OF SCIENCE that is accessible through the U-M's Search Tools (http://searchtools.lib.umich.edu/). The job of formulating questions for the St. Dominic de Guzman Libraries is the hardest job for the monks so your team pays them 6 gold for a question.

ST. ISIDORE OF SEVILLE, EASTERN, CENTRAL, AND WESTERN LIBRARIES OF

When you land on one of the St. Isidore Libraries, click your team's GAME PIECE to see the MONASTERY LIBRARY QUESTIONS the monks want your TEAM to answer. Pay the monks 1 GOLD for a question. To answer it, you must use the information your team finds on the WORLD-WIDE WEB. Most of the time, you can cut and paste the web page titles from the three listed answers into Google and click on the "Google Search" button to retrieve the web page where the answer might be found. Answers are not likely to be prominent on the page so your team might have to read and synthesize what you read to correctly answer questions. The purchase of an EXCLUSIVE LICENSE to the St. Isidore Libraries costs 3 GOLD. Issuing a CHALLENGE to the owning team also costs 3 GOLD.

ST. THOMAS, WHITE, BROWN, AND SANDALWOOD LIBRARIES OF

Beyond the St. Isidore Libraries are the White, Brown and Sandalwood libraries of St. Thomas. Pay the monks 2 GOLD for a question. To answer the MONASTERY LIBRARY QUESTIONS the monks have posted, you must use the information your team finds in online ENCYCLOPEDIAS through the U-M Library's Search Tools (http://searchtools.lib.umich.edu/), through its "Reference sources /Fast Facts" link (http://www.lib.umich.edu/ grad/guide/ guide.php?id=105), or in print encyclopedias in the reference department of one of the two dozen libraries at the University (using the encyclopedia's call number). Use clues in the three listed answers to find the exact encyclopedia article. When you retrieve the right articles, answers are not likely to be prominent in the article so your team might have to read and synthesize what you read to correctly answer MONASTERY LIBRARY QUESTIONS. The purchase of an EXCLUSIVE LICENSE to the St. Thomas Libraries costs 6 GOLD. Issuing a CHALLENGE to the owning team also costs 6 GOLD.

ST. JEROME, EASTERN, WESTERN, AND SHADED ORACULAR LIBRARIES OF

Nearly halfway down the path are the Eastern, Western, and Shaded Oracular Libraries of ST. JEROME. Pay the monks 3 GOLD for a question. To answer the MONASTERY LIBRARY QUESTIONS the monks have posted, you must use the information your TEAM finds in BOOKS through the U-M Library's Mirlyn catalog (http://mirlyn.lib.umich.edu/). Because books circulate, the monks have put on reserve the books your team might have to use to answer the questions they post. University Reserves are located just beyond the main entrance to the Shapiro Undergraduate Library. To answer most MONASTERY LIBRARY QUESTIONS, you will have to perform a "technical reading" of the books cited in the three listed answers, scanning their tables of contents, reading their prefaces or introductions, examining index entries, generally getting an idea of what the book is about and what the author's overall objectives were in writing the book. Sometimes you will have to compare the three books cited in listed answers side-by-side. The purchase of an EXCLUSIVE LICENSE to the St. Jerome Libraries costs 9 GOLD. Issuing a CHALLENGE to the owning team also costs 9 GOLD.

ST. CATHERINE OF ALEXANDRIA, GREEN, BLUE, AND GOLD LIBRARIES OF

Halfway through the village are the Green, Blue, and Gold Libraries of St. Catherine of Alexandria. Pay the monks 4 GOLD for a question. To answer the questions the monks post at these libraries, you must use the information your TEAM finds in EDITED WORKS through the U-M Library's Mirlyn catalog (http://mirlyn.lib.umich.edu/). On the outside, edited works look exactly like BOOKS, but on the inside, edited works are broken into chapters, CONFERENCE PAPERS, entries, or selections that are written by different people. Edited works are especially typical of scholarship in the humanities and some social science and science disciplines. Like BOOKS, edited works are books that circulate so the monks have put on reserve the edited works your team will use to answer the questions they post. University Reserves are located just beyond the main entrance to the Shapiro Undergraduate Library.

Answering the monks' questions will familiarize your team with the features of edited works. If you ignore edited works, you may miss some of the most important scholarship in humanities and social sciences disciplines. The purchase of an EXCLUSIVE LICENSE to the St. Catherine of Alexandria Libraries costs 12 GOLD. Issuing a CHALLENGE to the owning team also costs 12 GOLD.

ST. ALBERT, ROOK HOUSE, RIVER HOUSE, AND FOOTHILLS LIBRARIES OF

Nearing the home stretch on the path through the village are the Rook House, River House, and Foothills Libraries of St. Albert. Pay the monks 5 GOLD for a question. To answer the MONASTERY LIBRARY QUESTIONS the monks have posted, you must use the information your team finds in JOURNAL ARTICLES from the DATABASES at the U-M Library's Search Tools (http://searchtools.lib.umich.edu/).

Choosing the right database is difficult because of the hundreds of databases at Search Tools. The monks often give you hints about what databases to choose. For example, they are partial to JSTOR for questions in the humanities because JSTOR links to the original articles. Go to Search Tools (http://searchtools.lib.umich.edu/). Click on "Find Databases" and enter "jstor?" into the box. Choose JSTOR from the list and start searching.

Because the Black Death spans disciplines in the humanities, social sciences, sciences, and medicine, the monks like the CSA family of about six dozen databases. Go to Search Tools (http://searchtools.lib.umich.edu/). Click on "Find Databases," enter "csa?" into the box, and Search Tools lists dozens of CSA databases. Choose any database. When the CSA search engine launches, type your query into the box and choose "Natural Sciences" or "Arts & Humanities" from the "Subject Area" pull down menu. Unfortunately, CSA does not link directly to full text and you might have to click on the M GET IT buttons and follow them to the bitter end to retrieve the text of actual journal articles. Another way of retrieving texts of journal articles is to start at the University of Michigan Library home page (http://www.lib.umich.edu/), fill in the "Find e-Journals" radio button under "General Search" on the far left side, and type the name of the journal into the box. It takes time and perseverance to follow the search through to the bitter end -- the text of the journal article you want.

Answering MONASTERY LIBRARY QUESTIONS correctly will take time, effort, and experimentation but for your troubles, you might have the opportunity to purchase an EXCLUSIVE LICENSE to the St. Albert Libraries for 15 GOLD or issue a CHALLENGE to the owning team for 15 GOLD.

ST. DOMINIC DE GUZMAN, BLACK AND SILVER LIBRARIES OF

At the end of the path are the Black and Silver Libraries of St. Dominic de Guzman. Pay the monks 6 GOLD for a question. To answer the MONASTERY LIBRARY QUESTIONS the monks have posted, you must use the information your team finds in the ISI WEB OF SCIENCE. Most questions pertain to this CITATION DATABASE's unique Cited Ref Search. If you have in hand a really relevant article, you can find more like it through a Cited Ref Search. When you perform a Cited Ref Search in the ISI Web of Science, this search engine asks you to enter two pieces of information about your favorite reading: (1) its author (in the form of the author's last name and one or two initials) and (2) the year it was published. (The ISI WEB OF SCIENCE also asks you to enter the title of the journal, BOOK, or EDITED WORK in which your favorite reading was published but we advise you keep things simple and not to enter this third piece of information.)

To perform a Cited Ref Search in the ISI Web of Science, start at the U-M Library's Search Tools (http://searchtools.lib.umich.edu), click on "Find Databases," and type "isi?" into the box. Choose "ISI Web of Science." Click on its "Cited Ref Search" button. Into its "Cited Author" box, you type the surname, one or two initials, and a question mark, and into its "Cited Year(s)" box, type the year in which your favorite article was published.

Although the strength of the ISI Web of Science is its Cited Ref Searches, it also features keyword searches. Click its "General Search" button to get started.

The purchase of an EXCLUSIVE LICENSE to the St. Dominic De Guzman libraries costs 18 GOLD. Issuing a CHALLENGE to the owning team also costs 18 GOLD.

WINNING THE GAME

You and your opponents must prove to both monks and DUKE JEROME, that you can be trusted to use monastery collections responsibly, and can quickly, efficiently, and accurately find the desired information. The TEAM to be proven so will be named Lord Researcher, Defender of Hidgeon, winner of the game. Final game scoring takes these four factors into consideration: (1) how many SCROLLS per library type your team earns, (2) how long it takes your team to earn 3 scrolls for each of the 6 library types, (3) how many correct and incorrect answers your team submits to the monks during the course of the game, and (4) how much wealth your team amasses in the form of GOLD and EXCLUSIVE LICENSES.

When you have earned all 3 scrolls for each of the 6 library types, you can sell your EXCLUSIVE LICENSES back to the monks. This will not affect your standing in the game but it will allow you to stop playing the game and avoid receiving CHALLENGES from opposing teams that could result in a loss of property and wealth.

Karen Markey is a faculty member in the School of Information at the University of Michigan. Earlier this year, she received a small grant from the Delmas Foundation to build a prototype online board game that teaches students information-literacy skills. Her game prototype is now fully operational and is being tested and evaluated by a class of 75 undergraduates at the University of Michigan.

They've just finished conducting interviews with student game players, but they haven't had sufficient time to mull over interview data and analyze game play logs. They already recognize that the incentive for playing the game is a critical issue and future games must be intimately connected to a class assignment or project.

Because Karen wants to do something that would scale beyond Michigan, she is looking for research partners at public or academic libraries who are interested in building on her foundation, expanding what they have already done, and testing her approach with their library patrons. Her intent is to find libraries who want to collaborate on an IMLS National Leadership grant to host a unique instance of the game that is customized to achieving their information literacy objectives.

The game is based on the "search strategy" model that Tom Kirk and his Earlham College colleagues devised to teach undergraduates how to do library research. Karen chose the "Black Death" for the prototype game's topic, and they are learning from their evaluation other topics that college-age students prefer.
