[scene opens with a young female librarian (red hair, white blouse, grey skirt) leading Garth and Sam through the stacks of the library]
LIBRARIAN: You do know there is a good reason he's called the Unknown Soldier, right?
SAM: Right. Uh, we were just hoping maybe a theory or two had been a floated around over the years ... something local, maybe?
[she stops at one of the shelves and pulls out a book]
LIBRARIAN: There is one.

[...]

[the librarian is flipping through an old book, while the two men look over her shoulder]
LIBRARIAN: Corporal Collins of the Union shot and killed his brother Vance, who fought for the Confederacy. Local boys.
[cut to a closeup of a photograph in the book of Vance Collins]
SAM: Wait, so two brothers fought on opposite sides of the Civil War?
LIBRARIAN: Legend has it that Vance swore vengeance on his brother with his dying breath. Years later, consumed by guilt no doubt, the corporal dug his brother up where he'd buried him on the battlefield and brought him home.
GARTH: Are you suggesting this Vance guy is the Unknown Soldier?
LIBRARIAN: That's one theory, anyway.
SAM: What's that?
[he points at the picture, then cut to a closeup of a necklace around Collins' neck]
LIBRARIAN: Most of the soldiers were poor farmers, so ...
[she turns the pages and stops at a photograph of an 1859 Indian Head penny]
LIBRARIAN: The families would give them a penny on a string. It was for good luck, and in case they ever got lost, they always had a penny for food or drink.
[Sam gives a small knowing laugh]
SAM: A penny ...

From wikia.com:

Southern Comfort is the 6th episode of Season 8. It aired on November 7, 2012.

Synopsis
Sam and Dean investigate a murder and find that Garth is already on the case. Dean is not happy to learn that Garth has assumed Bobby's duties, but Garth points out that both Sam and Dean have been missing for the last year and someone needed to do it. The three of them discover an “avenging ghost” is responsible for the murders and they need to find the source before the killings starts again.

Plot
Dean tells Sam about a case he's found in Kearney, Missouri. Sam is incredulous: Dean hasn't spoken to him since introducing Benny and now he wants to go on a hunt. Sam wants to know why Benny is still alive, and Dean tells Sam that Benny, although a vampire, is his friend. Sam asks why his friend Amy Pond had to die, and Dean admits that he's changed: he agreed to let the pureblood werewolf Kate go, after all. Sam reminds Dean that she hadn't killed anyone, and Dean tells him that Benny isn't drinking live blood - if Benny slips up and another hunter kills him, though, that's fine. Sam still isn't happy, but agrees to check out the case in Missouri.

As they arrive at the scene, Sam remarks that it doesn't seem like their kind of thing. A woman named Mary Lew went crazy and killed her husband, Chester Lew. Dean thinks it's a case--the man was practically decapitated--and when they get out of the Impala they find another hunter already there: Garth. Garth is posing as a Texas ranger and wearing a cowboy hat. He sees Sam and Dean and gives them both a hug, saying that he missed them. Then his cell phone rings, and a row of different cell phones can be seen in the inner pockets of his jacket when he answers it. On the call, Garth gives advice to another hunter on how to kill a revenant. Afterwards, Sam asks Garth if he's the new Bobby, and he says that after Bobby died and Sam and Dean disappeared, he stepped in. Dean is upset, but Garth says they can talk about it later. He introduces the brothers to Scott Lew, Mary and Chester's son, but Scott can only tell them that his parents were high school sweethearts - he doesn't know why Mary snapped.

Sam can't find any EMF or sulfur at the scene. Garth reminds him that EMF can fade and any other evidence could have been contaminated. As they talk, Garth steps in something sticky. Sam thinks it might be green ectoplasm, and Garth, after taking a quick taste, confirms it. He then gets a call from the coroner, who tells him that the word "Alcott" was carved into Chester's chest - apparently by Mary's fingernails. They go to question Mary at the hospital, and she tells them that she was at the store last night and then she lost time. She remembers being full of rage, but not much else. They ask her about "Alcott" and learn she was a woman Chester took to their senior prom after a fight he and Mary had, but that was more than 30 years ago.

Before they question Sara Alcott, they stop for lunch. Garth asks Dean where he's been for the last year, and Dean tells him that he was in Purgatory. He asks him how he got out, but Dean changes the subject. They learn that Garth was a dentist before he became a hunter, and that his first kill was the Tooth Fairy.

Meanwhile, Scott stops to get coffee at a market. He grabs some cash from his mom's purse and heads inside, where he runs into an old friend named Jeff who gives him condolences and offers his help. Scott mentions some money that Jeff owes him and, green ectoplasm leaking from his ear, splashes him with hot coffee and then kills him with a nearby shovel. After the attack, Scott sees himself in a mirror, the visage of an old Civil War soldier flickering over his own reflection.

Sam, Dean, and Garth arrive on the scene, and Garth is now wearing an old baseball hat. When Dean realizes it was Bobby's, he snatches it off Garth's head, saying that he's wearing it wrong. They learn from the sheriff that Scott doesn't remember much except a white-hot rage, and his face is obscured by a strange glitch on the market's security footage. He also wrote the word "Sussex" in Jeff's blood, so they decide to split up: Sam will question Sara Alcott, and Dean and Garth will research Sussex.

Sam learns from Sara that, though she and Chester had sex on prom night, nothing else came of it and he married Mary soon after. Mary never really got over Chester's indiscretion, though. As he's leaving Sara's house, Sam remembers a moment with Amelia. They'd just had sex for the first time, and she told him about her husband, Don. Don died in Afghanistan, and afterwards she hadn't been able to endure everyone's pity, so she'd moved.

Dean and Garth are researching, and Garth asks if Dean wants to talk about whatever is going on between him and Sam. He knows that Bobby used to listen when Dean needed him. Dean gets angry and tells Garth to stop trying to be Bobby. Garth calls him out, saying that Bobby wasn't just there for Sam and Dean- he belonged to all the hunters. They go back to researching, and Dean learns that Sussex was a company Scott and Jeff started together. Jeff ran it into the ground, though, and Scott had held a grudge.

Sam calls and tells them that Mary held a grudge against Sara Alcott. Garth, who's been looking through one of Bobby's books, finds a reference to green ectoplasm and says they're dealing with a spectre: a ghost that possesses people and forces them to act on whatever betrayals they're feeling. Since the spectre Bobby hunted rose shortly after a grave desecration, they search for recent grave desecration reports in the area. The day before Mary was possessed, the town's Confederate "tomb of the unknown soldier" was vandalized and the casket opened by a group of teenagers, so the hunters go there after dark. Sam finds a broken cord on the ground, but it doesn't seem like anything in the casket has been taken or disturbed, so they salt and burn his bones.

The next day in the police station, Scott is having an asthma attack. Deputy Doug goes to get Scott's inhaler from his personal effects, but after touching Scott's things he becomes possessed and picks up a shotgun instead. As green ectoplasm leaks from his ear, he goes to the sheriff's desk and tells him to write his own reports before pulling the trigger, killing him. Afterwards at the scene, Dean notices green ectoplasm on the Sheriff's desk, and Sam says that the teenagers must have removed something from the casket that the spectre is attaching itself to. They need to find the object and whoever has it now, so they question Deputy Doug. He tells them that after the shooting, Officer Karl Henry tackled him to the ground, took his gun, and said he was going to the hospital. Dean tells Sam and Garth to find out what they can about the unknown soldier while he goes to the hospital.

At the library, Garth tells Sam that he's available if Sam wants to talk about anything - it seems like he and Dean are talking but not listening to each other. While Garth heads inside, Sam remembers the morning after he and Amelia had sex for the first time. When he woke up, she'd been leaving for work and had asked him to forget what she'd said about her husband because she didn't want him to look at her with pity. He is broken out of the memory by Garth, who calls him inside.

From the librarian they learn that the unknown soldier may be Vance Collins, a Confederate soldier who was killed by his brother, a Union soldier. According to legend, he swore vengeance with his dying breath. In an old photograph, Sam notices that Vance is wearing a necklace with a pendant. The librarian tells him that some soldiers wore a copper penny around their necks for luck. Sam calls Dean and leaves a message: there was a broken string at the tomb, and they're looking for the penny that was on it. Meanwhile, Dean intercepts Karl before he can kill a man who called him "out" during a baseball game. Dean punches Karl, but Karl quickly gets the better of him. He tells Dean that the spectre likes him before putting the penny in his hand.

Sam and Garth get back to their motel room to find Dean sitting calmly on his bed, not answering his ringing cell phone. Sam asks him what's going on, and Dean, green ectoplasm leaking from his ear, aims his gun at Sam and tells him that he should have looked for him while he was in Purgatory. We see the penny's journey from the teenager who took it, to the cashier he gave it to, to Mary who received it as change, to Scott who got it from her purse, to Doug who got it from Scott's personal effects in lockup, to Karl who picked it up from the floor after tackling Doug, and finally to Dean.

Dean, possessed by Vance, tells Sam that all he's done for the last eight years is deceive him. Sam admits that he made mistakes, and Dean says that what Sam has done--drinking demon blood, working with Ruby, staying soulless to hunt with Samuel, and leaving Dean in Purgatory--has been to betray him. Sam punches Dean and they fight. Garth gets between them and tries to talk Dean down, but it doesn't work. Dean tells Sam that Benny has been more of a brother to him than Sam ever has, and tries to push Garth out of the way. Garth punches Dean, surprising him and making him drop the penny.

Afterwards, Garth picks up the penny and melts it down. Dean asks him why the penny didn't effect him, and Garth says he doesn't hold grudges: you can't change the past. Then he tells Dean to stop being an Idjit about Sam because they're all each other has now. Then he gives Dean a hug, and Dean puts Bobby's hat back on Garth's head and tells him to "keep on truckin'." As Garth leaves in his car, he gets a call from another hunter who needs advice about a wendigo.

Before Sam and Dean leave Kearney, Sam remembers when he confronted Amelia after their hook-up. He'd told her that he didn't pity her and said that when his brother died he ran, too. She'd let him into her motel room and poured him whiskey, then asked if he wanted to talk about it. He'd said yes and told her that she could talk to him about Dean if she wanted. When Sam gets into the Impala with Dean, he tells him Amelia's name and that the two of them lived together in Kermit, Texas. He then tells Dean that he knows he meant what he said when he was possessed, but he needs to own up to his own mistakes - like not telling him about Benny and letting the vampire live. He says that he might just be the hunter who kills Benny someday, and Dean says they'll cross that bridge when they get to it.

From wordpress.com:

Many people believe that librarians don't work for a living. We are either volunteers (don't get paid) or that we spend our days reading; I hate to dispel those rumors but they are untrue. We do work for a living.

Rice Lake Public Library Board
Director's Report (11/09/10)

STAFF DAY: The staff heard a fantastic presentation from Matt Rosendahl of WITC regarding the use of technology in libraries. It was informative and fun, and Matt was very eager to create some partnerships with the public library. Staff also learned stress relief techniques from Christy Moravitz of Eden Yoga. After a wonderful lunch provided by the Friends of the Library, 14 of the staff stayed to paint the library!

BOTTOM SHELF ROOM: This room was painted in preparation for carpeting which needs to be done due to the exposed asbestos tiling that is cracked and broken. The cost for carpeting is approximately $2500 for the space. We have $1100 in donations to cover some of the cost and have asked the Friends if they would be willing to help with a portion of the cost. The library would need to cover the remaining amount.

JOCASTA: Did you call for assistance?
OBI WAN: Yes, yes I did.
JOCASTA: Are you having a problem, Master Kenobi?
OBI WAN: Yes, um ... I'm looking for a planetary system called Kamino.
JOCASTA: Kamino ...
OBI WAN: It doesn't show up in the Archive charts ...
JOCASTA: Kamino ... It's not a system I'm familiar with. Are you sure you have the right coordinates?
[Obi Wan sits down at a computer terminal and points at the screen]
OBI WAN: According to my information, it should appear in this quadrant here. Just south of the Rishi Maze.
[she looks at the screen, then shakes her head]
JOCASTA: I hate to say it, but it looks like the system you're searching for doesn't exist.
OBI WAN: Impossible. Perhaps the Archives are incomplete.
JOCASTA: If an item doesn't appear in our records, it does not exist.
[she notices a young Padawan and walks off with him, as Obi Wan continues to stare at the screen in puzzlement]

STAR WARS, EPISODE II: ATTACK OF THE CLONES

Lucas, George (Director). Star War, Episode II: Attack of the Clones. United States: Lucasfilm, Ltd., 2002.

Novelization: Salvatore, R.A. Star Wars, Episode II: Attack of the Clones. New York: Ballentine, 2002.

Starring: Alathea McGrath (Madame Jocasta Nu, Jedi Archivist); Hayden Christensen (Anakin Skywalker); Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan Kenobi); Ron Falk (Voice of Dexter Jettster)
Apparently libraries and librarians in galaxies far, far away aren't any different than those you find in the here and now. She's elderly, hair in a skewered bun, and wearing a conservative outfit. The library lay-out is familiar, too. And the librarian is as close-minded as we hope we never are. Librarian to Obi-Wan as they study the computer screen: "I hate to say it, but it looks like the [planetary] system you're searching for doesn't exist." "Impossible. Perhaps the archives are incomplete." "If an item doesn't appear in our records, it does not exist." She huffs off while he sits there with that baffled-patron expression we all know and love. (Later they realize the archive has been tampered with by a Jedi. Bad Jedi.) What led Obi-Wan to the archive in the first place was an interesting conversation with his old friend and kitschy diner cook (Dex) about wisdom, knowledge, and the importance of symbols -- subjects which are near and dear to information science scholars. (Here is an excerpt from the novel, page 156-157: "She was a frail-looking creature, quite elderly, and noting that brought a smile to Obi-Wan's face. How many younger and less experienced Jedi had looked upon that facade, the thin and wrinkled face and neck, the white hair tied tight, thinking that they could push the woman around, getting her to do their studying for them, only to encounter the truth that was Jocasta Nu? She was a firebrand, that weak facade hiding her true strength and determination. Jocasta Nu had been the Archivist for many, many years, and this was her place, her domain, her kingdom. Any Jedi coming in here, even the most exalted of Jedi Masters, would play by the rules of Jocasta Nu, or they would surely face her wrath.")

---

From imdb.com:

Jocasta Nu was the Chief Librarian of the Jedi Archives at the time of the Clone Wars with a penchant for being a bit overconfident in the completeness of her Archives. Her patterned robes bore the symbols of the Ansata, representing her devotion to knowledge and learning.

During her career, Jocasta trained many Padawans, including the future Emperor's Hand, Jerec, Olee Starstone, whom she tutored in the years prior to the Clone Wars, and Jin-Lo Rayce, founder of the Agents of Ossus.

As a young Jedi Knight, Jocasta served as an archaeologist for the Jedi ExplorCorps and for decades after her service, she wore her lightsaber at all times, in memory of her time as an active field agent of the Order.

Some time prior to 49 BBY, Jocasta Nu stepped down after spending ten years as a member of the Jedi Council. She took up the mantle of Librarian and served as Archives Director for over thirty years. She knew Count Dooku quite well, and proclaimed him to be one of the greatest Jedi of all time.

During her position of Chief Librarian, she gathered a very precise and extensive knowledge of the galaxy. She often gave advice to Jedi Knights who were looking for information about the planets they were sent to on a mission. During these years, her confidence in the Archives was whole, claiming that if something was not in the Archives, then it did not exist. To her embarrassment, this statement was belied when Obi-Wan Kenobi was unable to find Kamino in the Archives since it took a child student under Yoda's instruction to suggest the obvious: that the records were tampered with to hide Kamino's existence. Thankfully to Madame Nu's experience, she provided the valuable clue that only a Jedi Master could have accessed the files and deleted them.

During Operation: Knightfall in 19 BBY, Jocasta told her latest padawan, Jin-Lo Rayce, to flee the Temple through underground passages into the Coruscant underbelly. She later faced Darth Vader, wielding her blue lightsaber. The Dark Lord lifted her with the Force Grip and impaled Jocasta through the chest after she denied him access to the Temple's signal beacon, killing her instantly. Jocasta's body was found by Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda when they returned to Coruscant.

When the Galactic Empire emerged, official records compiled by Sate Pestage stated that Jocasta Nu was executed for harboring information that threatened the Empire and its citizens.

INTERIOR: JEDI TEMPLE, ARCHIVE LIBRARY - DAY

A bronze bust of Count Dooku stands among a line of other busts of Jedi in the Archive Room. OBI-WAN stands in front of it, studying the striking features of the chiseled face.

On the walls, lighted computer panels seem to stretch into infinity. Farther along the room in the background, FIVE JEDI are seated at tables, studying archive material.

After OBI-WAN studies the bust for a few moments before MADAME JOCASTA NU, the Jedi Archivist, is standing next to him. She is an elderly, frail-looking human Jedi. Tough as old boots and smart as a whip.

JOCASTA NU: Did you call for assistance?

OBI-WAN: (distracted in thought) Yes... yes, I did...

JOCASTA NU: He has a powerful face, doesn't he? He was one of the most brilliant Jedi I have had the privilege of knowing.

OBI-WAN: I never understood why he quit. Only twenty Jedi have ever left the Order.

JOCASTA NU: (sighs) The Lost Twenty... Count Dooku was the most recent and the most painful. No one likes to talk about it. His leaving was a great loss to the Order.

OBI-WAN: What happened?

JOCASTA NU: Well, Count Dooku was always a bit out of step with the decisions of the Council... much like your old Master, Qui-Gon Jinn.

OBI-WAN: (surprised) Really?

JOCASTA NU: Oh, yes. They were alike in many ways. Very individual thinkers... idealists...

JOCASTA NU gazes at the bust.

JOCASTA NU: He was always striving to become a more powerful Jedi. He wanted to be the best. With a lightsaber, in the old style of fencing, he had no match. His knowledge of the Force was... unique. In the end, I think he left because he lost faith in the Republic. He believed that politics were corrupt, and he felt the Jedi betrayed themselves by serving the politicians. He always had very high expectations of government. He disappeared for nine or ten years, then just showed up recently as the head of the separatist movement.

OBI-WAN: It's very interesting. I'm not sure I completely understand.

JOCASTA NU: Well, I'm sure you didn't call me over here for a history lesson. Are you having a problem, Master Kenobi?

OBI-WAN: Yes, I'm trying to find a planet system called Kamino. It doesn't seem to show up on any of the archive charts.

JOCASTA NU: Kamino? It's not a system I'm familiar with... Let me see...

JOCASTA NU leans over OBI-WAN'S shoulder, looking at the screen.

JOCASTA NU: Are you sure you have the right coordinates?

OBI-WAN: (nodding) According to my information, it should appear in this quadrant somewhere... just south of the Rishi Maze.

JOCASTA NU taps the keyboard and frowns.

JOCASTA NU: No coordinates? It sounds like the sort of directions you'd get from a street tout... some old miner or Furbog trader.

OBI-WAN: All three, actually.

JOCASTA NU: Are you sure it exists?

OBI-WAN: Absolutely.

JOCASTA NU: Let me do a gravitational scan.

OBI-WAN and JOCASTA NU study the star map hologram.

JOCASTA NU: There are some inconsistencies here. Maybe the planet you're seeking was destroyed.

OBI-WAN: Wouldn't that be on record?

JOCASTA NU: It ought to be, unless it was very recent. (shakes her head) I hate to say it, but it looks like the system you're searching for doesn't exist.

OBI-WAN: Impossible... perhaps the archives are incomplete.

JOCASTA NU: The archives are comprehensive and totally secure, my young Jedi. One thing you may be absolutely sure of - if an item does not appear in our records, it does not exist!

OBI-WAN stares at her, then looks back to the map. JOCASTA NU notices a young boy approach. She turns from OBI-WAN and leaves with the youngster.

From wikipedia.org:

Heroes of Newerth (HoN) is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) video game developed by S2 Games for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. The game idea was derived from the Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne custom map Defense of the Ancients and is S2 Games' first MOBA title. The game was released on May 12, 2010 and re-released as a free-to-play game on July 29, 2011.

Gameplay
Heroes of Newerth pits two teams of players against each other: the Legion and the Hellbourne. Both teams are based at opposite corners of the map in their respective bases. Bases consist of buildings, creep spawn points, towers, a hero spawning pool, and a central structure. The goal of the game is to either destroy the central structure, the World Tree (Legion) or Sacrificial Shrine (Hellbourne), of the opposite base or force the other team to concede. Players achieve this by selecting heroes with unique skills to combat the other team.

Do librarians 'rock the boat'? Do they challenge those around them to win influence and advantage? Why is it that librarians are little found on the 'influence' grid of personality assessment tests? The Machiavellian Librarian offers real life examples of librarians who use their knowledge and skill to project influence, and turn the tide in their, and their library's, favor. Authors offer first hand and clear examples to help librarians learn to use their influence effectively, for the betterment of their library and their career. Opening chapters cover visualizing data, as well as networking and strategic alignment. Following chapters discuss influence without authority-making fierce allies, communicating results in accessible language and user-centered planning. Closing chapters address using accreditation and regulation reporting to better position the library, as well as political positioning and outcome assessment.

* Throws the spotlight on librarian's professional and personality traits, many of which are deleterious to the long-term viability of library funding
* Shows how best to boost the value proposition of libraries, through enhanced influence
* Includes how-to chapters on influencing others in the organization

From google.com:

Although I recognize this book is unworthy to be given to Yourself, yet I trust that out of kindness you will accept it, taking account of the fact that there is no greater gift I can present to you than the opportunity to understand, after a few hours reading, everything I have learned over the course of so many years, and have undergone so many discomforts and dangers to discover.
- Machiavelli, 1995, p. 5

Those words by civil servant Niccolo Machiavelli are at the beginning of the most famous political works in Western history, The Prince, written in 1513 in Florence, Italy (Machiavelli, 1995, p. 5). While the book that you are currently holding in your hands did not come from dangers or discomforts (well, not too many, at least), it is filled with ideas and suggestions that Machiavellian librarians have learned over the course of their professional years.

Five hundred years ago, aka 1513, started out to be a very bad year for Machiavelli, as months earlier he had been wrongly found guilty, along with some of his acquaintances, of plotting against the new Medici government of Florence. So at the age of 44, Machiavelli spent his jail time being tortured, fined, and writing letters to powerful friends like Giuliano Medici, whose brother had just been elected Pope Leo X. Pope Leo would soon release Machiavelli and others in jail so that they could join in the public festivities which were underway to celebrate the new pope (Machiavelli, 1995, p. xii).

Born in 1469 to Bartolomea de' Nelli and Bernardo Machiavelli, Niccolo was truly a product of the Renaissance culture going on around him (Viroli, 2000). His father was a poor lawyer who could not join the legal guild due to his family's debits, but he wanted his son to have a good education in the humanities (Machiavelli, 1995, p. xiii; Viroli, 2000). But Niccolo, due to his family, was destined always to be the civil servant and never the politician. Machiavelli first appears in the public records in 1498 as a second chancellor of the Florentine republic and later that year he was elected to the position of secretary of the Ten of War committee (Machiavelli, 1995, p. xiii). Other high-ranking positions soon followed, such as organizing the Florentine militia, and later he would travel to France, Austria, and all over Italy on diplomatic missions (Machiavelli, 1995, p. xiv). By 1501 he had married Marietta Corsini and with her had six children (Skinner, 2000).

While considered the ideal book for anyone going into politics, written to convey the art of influence and leadership for a young prince just coming into power, The Prince was penned by Machiavelli as a plea for a job. Talk about a cover letter! The Prince, writes Skinner, has two themes: war and arms, and that "in addition to having a sound army, a prince who aims to scale the heights of glory must cultivate the right qualities of princely leadership" (2000, p. 38). Virtue and goodness are apparently not characteristics we need in princes, Machiavelli tells readers. What is needed is deception, cruelty, unfaithfulness, and whatever it takes to be a successful prince and stay in power and to keep the principality safe and secure (Rubery, 2009). After writing The Prince in jail, Machiavelli did not get back his diplomatic and civil service career; that part of his life was over. Instead, he changed his focus and increasingly became "a man of letters" (Skinner, 2000, p. 55) and soon other works - fiction and nonfiction - followed, including The Discourses, The Art of War, and The History of Florence. However, The Prince, which was not published until after his death in 1527, would be his claim to immorality.

What does a 500-year-old Italian book on war, arms, and cruelty have to teach modern-day librarians? Librarianship may seem much more in tuned to Servant Leadership than Machiavellianism. Librarians are typically called to their profession by principles of public benevolence: tolerance, equality, and civic empowerment. We root the arguments for our continued existence in lofty principles and touching patron anecdotes. When we do use data, it is often rife with caveats: "Well, there is a correlation here with student success, but you know that the only true measure of causation is a longitudinal focus group... " We bury the lead headline behind pages of interjected pre-analysis.

Why read this book? In sum total, librarians need to boost their abilities to influence decision-makers, or else face professional extinction. Machiavelli wrestled with dualities through his writing: private life vs. public life, Christianity vs. paganism, individual knowledge vs. common pursuits (Donskis, 2011). Librarians live in a similarly dichotomous world. On one hand, we are seen as fuddy-duddy relics of a print-based world. In reality, we are recruited by the Central Intelligence Agency for our digital information prowess (Central Intelligence Agency, 2007). On the one hand, we avoid using our professional terms like "metadata," "Boolean," "databases," or "fields," but on the other hand, our students of all backgrounds and preparation levels get hired as data-entry professionals in the entry information economy, and an understanding of Boolean logic could boost their efficiency with every search box they ever face. Fictional police and crime shows talk about databases with glee, glamour, and awe, as an all-powerful research tool that only the most crafty hackers on their team can wrangle. They don't search "Google Terrorist;" they consult a crime database. Yet these hacker-turned-criminal-investigators are never former librarians. Librarians in fiction still dwell in caves of paper books. How do we shift impressions of what we do? How do we craft a message with greater impact? How do we show stakeholders the import and value of our information skills? Each author in this book has offered practical examples and insights into the professional dilemma of bringing visibility to our value.

At the surface, the misanthropic stereotype of Machiavellianism seems like an ill fit, professionally. However, librarians who deeply read Machiavelli's work may be surprised at certain synergies. While Machiavellianism in the pejorative sense means deceit, manipulation, cynicism, and ruthlessness, his works were much more complex, motivationally. He never actually stated, "The end justifies the means." In fact, deep reading reveals certain shared values with the library profession. For one, he wanted a value-neutral evaluation approach. In his view, politicians should have values and ethics independent from other value sets, such as religion, and reject the biasing influences of utopian fantasies. In essence, he believed in approaching information pragmatically, according to need or function. Secondly, a review of The Discourses reveals that personal gains are not the end goal for Machiavelli. They are simply a vehicle for civil prosperity. His goal was not the whims of the Prince, but civic virtue, preserving civilization from disruption. He sought a place where rules were followed and civility ultimately reigned. Librarians can appreciate this mindset. Sometimes, in the interest of fairness and the common good, individual patrons cannot get what they want.

[scene opens with sped-up footage from the previous episode, where a male college student speaks to a female college student from the other side of a bookshelf in the school library]
HENRY: [in voice over] Okay, where was I? I met a mystery girl, and what happened next ...
[cut to the male student and his stepsister walking into the library]
MADISON: Henry, we were just here!
HENRY: Don't worry, we're not here to study. We're here to--
MADISON: I know, I know! We're to find the new love of your life ...
HENRY: No, not the love of my life ...
[she sighs]
HENRY: Just a girl that I have met and ... would like to meet again.
MADISON: And you seriously think she's gonna be as boring as us, and spend two nights in the library?
[cut to a closeup of Madison]
MADISON: Why do you like this girl so much?
[cut to a closeup of Henry]
HENRY: Uno, she was wearing a Blondie band t-shirt!
[cut back to footage from the previous night, as the mystery girl's t-shirt can be seen through the open space in the bookshelf]
HENRY: [in voice over] The greatest eighties band!
[cut back to the two in the library]
HENRY: Two, she laughed at--
[cut back to footage from the previous night, as the girl is looking through the open space in the bookshelf and laughing]
HENRY: [in voice over] All of my jokes!
MADISON: [in voice over] Oh god ...
[cut back to the two in the library]
MADISON: You did not tell her the one about the fork, the poodle, and the whipped cream, did you?
[he laughs]
HENRY: Uh huh, and it takes a special kinda girl to laugh at that one!
[cut to a closeup of Henry]
HENRY: Come on, just help me! It'll be like all those crime scene dramas that you love so much!
[cut back to a shot of the two]
MADISON: Except there is no crime ... except for stalking. But, as long as I'm here--
[cut to a closeup of Madison]
MADISON: Let's go check this girl out.
[she puts on a pair of sunglasses, then cut back to a shot of the two (as Henry is not impressed)]
HENRY: Let's just try to find the shelf I was at last night ...
[he walks off, and she shrugs]
MADISON: Eh.
[she takes off the glasses and follows him, then cut to sepia-toned footage (including "silent film" style piano music) of the two walking around the stacks (he's feverishly looking at the books, while she makes a half-hearted attempt before checking her phone ... so he grabs her by the arm and drags her with him)]
[cut to the two walking towards another bookshelf (as the footage returns to normal), and Henry grabs one of the books]
HENRY: This is it!
MADISON: Yay, you found books ... Congrats! Can we go now?
[he shakes his head and keeps looking around, so she starts pouting]
MADISON: Please, what kinda clues do you think you're gonna find here?
[he stops, unsure of what his next move should be, then cut back to footage from the previous night]
HENRY: [in voice over] It was then I realized she had a book in her hand ...
[cut back to the two in the library]
HENRY: We just need to find out who checked it out!
MADISON: Well, here's hoping they'll give you the information ...
[cut to a young African-American female librarian (dark hair pulled back in a ponytail, hoop earrings, flower blouse) standing at the front desk with an emotionless look on her face]
BILLIE: No.
[cut to the two standing in front of the librarian, as Henry shakes his head in dejection]
MADISON: Well, there goes hope ...

From wikipedia.org:

Aion: The Tower of Eternity, known also as The Tower of AION in Japan, is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) released by NCsoft, a major Korean game developer. The game combines PvP and PvE (a concept the developers call PvPvE) in a fantasy game environment. As of May 20, 2009, Aion had 3.5 million subscribers in Asia.

Plot
When the god Aion created the world of Atreia, he created the draken - powerful dragon-like beasts tasked with safeguarding the humans; performing Aion's will on the planet; and protecting the Tower of Eternity, Aion's physical presence on Atreia. For a time, the draken obeyed Aion; but over time, they began to enjoy their power, ignoring their duties and abusing the humans. Aion took notice, creating the twelve Empyrean Lords in response. Angelic in appearance, the Empyrean Lords were demigods who walked amongst humans, and used a force called "Aether" to create a powerful barrier around the Tower of Eternity, protecting all of those within. While the outside world continued to be ravaged by the draken, who had become the more ferocious Balaur; the humans within the barrier managed to tap into the Aether, gaining their own powers. In time, they would become known as the Daeva.

As time went on, the Lords decided that they had to be more aggressive in stopping the Balaur. With the number of Daeva growing in size, the Lords decided to form an army, with ten of the Empyrean Lords leading the Daeva into battle; while the remaining two, Siel and Israphel, protected the Tower of Eternity (thus earning the title "Tower Lords"). This conflict between the Balaur and the Empyrean Lords would come to be known as the Millennium War, which led to no real progress by any side. As the war progressed, a faction of Lords began to view the war as unwinnable, and Lord Israphel proposed a discussion of peace with the Balaur. This surprise proposal drew criticism from within the faction; after a lengthy and heated debate, seven of the twelve Lords became the winning majority to move forward with the plan.

However, for reasons unclear, the negotiation failed. When the Balaur arrived at the Tower of Eternity, a commotion broke out, killing a Balaurian captain; the remaining Balaur, enraged, marched upon and destroyed the Tower, which set off a chain reaction that threatened to destroy the planet. However, Israphel and Siel made the ultimate sacrifice and gave their own lives to protect Atreia. The world was shattered into two "hemi-shells", with a dark Abyss lying between them; but it was held together by the aetheric field created from the Tower Lords' sacrifice.

While the Balaur were banished to the Abyss, the Empyrean Lords found themselves in conflict with each other. Two groups were formed, each with five Lords; the Seraphim, who had proposed the peace solution and blamed the others for sabotaging the peace negotiations by failing to agree to them; and the Shedim, who blamed the Seraphim, believing that their weakness and their proposing of the peace talk allowed the Balaur to gain the upper hand. From that day on, the two sides became bitter enemies.

The Shedim were exiled to Asmodae, the dark and harsh upper, inner half of the planet; while the Seraphim Lords settled in Elysea, the light and beautiful bottom half. They both took their humans and Daeva with them, and over time, they adapted to their new world and declared the opposing side to become their mortal enemies. Those in Asmodae became the Asmodians, gaining dark features and hostility towards outsiders (though they are generous and supportive to their own kind). Those in Elysea became the Elyos, growing even more beautiful and believing themselves to be Aion's chosen people (although they have grown arrogant). From that day on, they would wage war for centuries as bloody enemies.

KATE: Oh, Misses Keaton will be just furious!
[cut to two of the mice spying on the woman from inside a nearby wall]
NORBERT: Who do you suppose is doing this?
ZAZI: I don't know, but there's got to be a way to find out!
NORBERT: Yeah, it may be funny for them, but it sure isn't funny for Kate!
ZAZI: Wait a minute!
NORBERT: Zazi, you've got that look in your eye ... What are you thinking?
ZAZI: Come on, let's find Leon ... I've got an idea!

[the library assistant is taking a VHS tape out of the VCR, as the mice spy on her from inside the wall]
ZAZI: Hmm, so far so good! Everything seems to be fine today ... no sign of any stupid stunts!
[cut back to the library assistant, as she ejects the tape]
KATE: Now, where is that container?
[she reaches for some VHS boxes underneath the VCR, then recoils in horror and screams when she notices a large rubber spider]
[cut back to the three mice, as they gasp]
ZAZI: Oh no, it's happened again!
NORBERT: Poor Kate!
[the third mouse, however, looks away and tries to stifle a laugh ... but tries to brush it off when he notices the other two are looking at him]
LEON: Oh, uh ... it's terrible! It's just terrible!
[cut back to the library assistant, as she picks up the spider]
KATE: Oh, I am so tired of these ridiculous practical jokes!
[she gets up and storms off in a huff, then cut back to the three mice behind the wall]
ZAZI: This Prankster character has just gone too far!
NORBERT: Yeah, it's not funny anymore!
LEON: Oh? I dunno, I thought it was kinda funny ...
ZAZI: It is not, Leon! This joker doesn't know when to stop!
[Leon mocks her in a condescending tone]
LEON: Well then, why don't you try to catch him, huh?
ZAZI: We will!

Bookmice (1991- )
TV Series - 30 min

The main characters in this TVO kids' series were three puppet mice who lived behind the wall in a library, and didn't always get along. Their names were Zazi, Norbert, and Leon. They made friends with certain kids who regularly came to the library, but always had to make sure that no librarian was ever aware of their presence in the building! The mice were often visited by the Wiz of Wonder, a wizard who was a friend of theirs, and eventually started working in the library in disguise, going by the name Mr. Flower. There was also a puppet feline in the show named Exit, who often caused trouble in the lives of the mice while he was around. Zazi, Norbert, and Leon often encountered some other interesting visitors as well.

[scene opens with a young man entering the public library, as he walks over to a bookshelf directly behind the conservatively-dressed older female librarian (who looks up from the books she's reshelving when she notices him standing there)]
LIBRARIAN: What is thee wish?
[the man (not really paying attention to her) continues looking at the shelf]
MIKE: Oh, I'm looking for some local b--
[it suddenly dawns on him what she just said, so he slowly turns to look at her]
MIKE: What'd you say?
LIBRARIAN: What is thee wish?
[he continues staring at her, with a bemused look on his face]
MIKE: Um, local biography or history.
[she points to someone off camera]
LIBRARIAN: If thee will consult with my colleague in there.
MIKE: Mm-hmm ...
[he starts to walk away, as the librarian moves on to the shelf he was browsing to continue reshelving, when he turns back]
MIKE: Dost thou have a washroom?
[she smiles and points in the opposite direction]
MIKE: Thank thee.
[she goes back to reshelving, as he gives her one more incredulous look before moving on]

THE PHILADELPHIA STORY

The Philadelphia Story Cukor, George (Director). The Philadelphia Story. United States: Metro-Goldwyn Mayer, 1940.

Starring: Hilda Plowright (Librarian); James Stewart (Mike Connor); Katharine Hepburn (Tracy Lord); Cary Grant (C.K. Dexter Haven)

Based on the Play: Barry, Phillip. The Philadelphia Story: A Comedy in Three Acts. New York: Coward-McCann, 1939.

And Broadway Play (1938) Starring: Katharine Hepburn (Tracy Lord; in 1980 Blythe Danner revised the role on Broadway for a brief run). Donald Ogden Stewart won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Haven's grandfather built the vine-covered public library that briefly appears in this witty film that relaunched Hepburn's career and won Stewart his only Oscar. The dialog is crisp and funny, especially when writer Mike Connor (Stewart) goes to the library to research the history of the hoity-toity Lord family. The conservative librarian (no glasses!) asks him, "What does thee wish?" He tells her, and she replies, "If thee will consult with my colleague in there." He then asks, "Dost thou have a washroom? Thank thee." (One must assume the librarian is a Quaker but it's never specified.) Of course he gets shushed when speaking with Miss Lord (who happens to be sitting there reading one of his books). Wonderful repartee in this film. Tracy to short-story author Connor: "People buy books, don't they?" "Not as long as there's a library around." Wise-acre Dexter Haven (Cary Grant) later says to Connor, "I thought all writers drank to excess and beat their wives. You know, one time I secretly wanted to be a writer." No heavy library themes here, but you can use it as your excuse to re-watch this light and lively early movie featuring three true Hollywood stars in their prime.

From google.com:

In "The Philadelphia Story" (1940), journalist Macaulay Connor (James Stewart) visits a public library to research some local biography and history. Macaulay meets a librarian (uncredited; Hilda Plowright), evidently a Quaker as suggested by her usage of "three" and "thou," who momentarily stops shelving books in order to provide assistance. She wears a front pleated dress with small lace collar and has a low fishtail bun.

As he walks around the library, Macaulay meets Tracy Lord (Katharine Hepburn) at a library table reading his book. As they chat, their voices elevate, and the librarian twice gives them a "shush" as she walks by the table.

Actress Plowright projects the stereotypical image and adds one new dimension to the stereotype in American films - the "shush" for silence. Although the "shush" was used seven years earlier in "The Good Companions," Plowright is the first American reel librarian the authors detected using the term; succeeding reel librarians added the "shush" to their vocabulary almost immediately.
