[scene opens with Kelly Ripa and guest co-host David Muir playing "Time to Smile Travel Trivia", as a giant cellphone next to them displays a still image of a female librarian ("Dawn Kaestner, Snohomish WA")]
KELLY: Hey Dawn, how's it going?
DAWN: [over the phone] Hi, good! How are you?
KELLY: Good, good! Say good morning to David Muir!
DAWN: [over the phone] Oh, good morning David!
DAVID: Good morning, Dawn!
[the audience catcalls]
DAVID: How do we, how do we say this? "Sno-hoe-mish?"
DAWN: [over the phone] Yeah.
DAVID: Snohomish, alright.
KELLY: Um, so--
DAVID: We gotta get there sometime.
KELLY: Yeah, we should get there!
DAVID: So what do you do, Dawn?
DAWN: [over the phone] I'm an early literacy programmer for the public library system.
KELLY: Oh my gosh, that is the most ... one of the most important jobs I can imagine!
DAWN: [over the phone] It's a lotta fun!
KELLY: Mm ...
DAVID: And you pick ... So that means you pick out the books for young people in your community, before they even know what they're gonna read next?
DAWN: [over the phone] Exactly! I get to read children's books all day, and do storytimes, and introduce them to the love of books! It's great!
KELLY: Let me tell you something, that is very important work, because if you have ... I'm a parent that has a child that struggles with reading, and that is really really--
[she turns to her co-host]
KELLY: Developing the love of reading is the single most important thing you can give to a kid, I think.
DAVID: Biggest gift, sure.
KELLY: Yeah, and it really is.
[the audience applauds]
KELLY: Dawn, we're gonna spin the wheel and see what you're playing for, okay?
DAWN: [over the phone] Okay!
[she spins the wheel and it lands on "St. James's Club Morgan Bay"]

From dadt.com:

Kelly's co-host this morning is "World News Tonight" anchor DAVID MUIR.

"What team's home stadium did Mark Consuelos say was where he saw his fist baseball game?"

She got it right away. It was the Kansas City Royals. She picked number 30 for her favorite basketball player's jersey to get eight place settings of American made fine china from Lenox valued at over $500.

---

From wikia.com:

Toshokan Senso (lit. "Library War") is a Japanese light novel series by Hiro Arikawa, with illustrations by Sukumo Adabana. There are four novels in the series, though only the first novel is called Toshokan Senso; the subsequent novels are named Toshokan Nairan, Toshokan Kiki, and Toshokan Kakumei. The novels were published by MediaWorks between February 2006 and November 2007. Two volumes of a spin-off series entitled Bessatsu Toshokan Senso (lit. Supplement: Library War) have also been published by ASCII Media Works. As of April 2008, the original four novels and volume one of the spin-off series have sold over 1.25 million copies in Japan. The story was inspired from the Statement on Intellectual Freedom in Libraries of the Japan Library Association.

A manga adaptation by Kiiro Yumi started serialization in the shojo manga magazine LaLa on September 24, 2007 published by Hakusensha; another manga adaptation by Yayoi Furudori started serialization in the shonen manga magazine Dengeki Daioh on November 21, 2007 published by ASCII Media Works. A twelve-episode anime adaptation by Production I.G aired on Fuji TV's Noitamina programming block between April and June 2008. Two Internet radio shows started in April 2008 meant to promote the series which are hosted by voice actors of the anime. An anime film produced by Production I.G was released on June 16, 2012. A live action film was released on April 27, 2013.

The premise of Toshokan Senso involves the Japanese government passing the Media Betterment Act (MBA) as law in 1989 which allows the censorship of any media deemed to be potentially harmful to Japanese society by deploying agents in the Media Betterment Committee (MBC) with the mandate to go after individuals and organizations that are trying to exercise the act of conducting freedom of expression activities in the media. However, local governments opposed to the MBA establishes armed anti-MBA defense force units to protect libraries from being raided by MBC agents under the Freedom of the Libraries Law. The conflict between MBC agents and library soldiers has continued to 2019, when the story begins. In accordance with the Japanese era calendar scheme, 1989 in Toshokan Senso is rendered the first year of the fictional Seika era, rendering 2019 as Seika 31.

Iku Kasahara
Voiced in Anime: Marina Inoue
Played in Live Action Film: Nana Eikura
Iku Kasahara is the main character of Toshokan Senso; she is twenty-two-years-old and is initially ranked Library Clerk First Class, but is later promoted to Library Clerk Supervisor. She joined the Library Defense Force's Kanto Library Base in 2019 after being inspired by a high ranking Kanto Library Defense Force member who saved a book she wanted to buy that was targeted for censorship. She holds this unknown person in high regard, thinking of him as her "prince", and she wants to be an "ally of justice" as he was for her. As such, she has a strong sense of justice when it comes to freedom of expression and is willing to put her life on the line for the books she has sworn to protect. When she enters into recruit training however, she finds it to be very challenging, especially since her drill instructor Atsushi Dojo seems to have singled her out for more attention and pushes her harder than most other recruits. In high school, she had been a member of the track and field team, so she has a lot of stamina and drive to continue with the Library Defense Force.

When the story begins, Kasahara is a sub-par recruit who constantly prone to making critical mistakes and is not as knowledgeable about the cause she is in the middle of compared to others around her, mostly due to her not paying attention in lectures on the base. Despite these apparent flaws, she is recruited into the base's Library Task Force, an elite group of soldiers who go through rigorous training in order to respond during difficult operations. While at first she starts out slow, she soon becomes capable of clerical tasks in regard to working in the base's library, though she still finds it difficult to make a positive impression on Dojo, her superior officer. Later on, Kasahara finds out that Dojo, her superior, is actually her "prince" and she begins to warm up to him somewhat.

Atsushi Dojo
Voiced in Anime: Tomoaki Maeno
Played in Live Action Film: Junichi Okada
Atsushi Dojo is a twenty-six-year-old member of the Library Task Force and is ranked Librarian Second Class. He is 165 cm (5'5") tall, though is thought to be too short for Kasahara, despite her only being 5 cm (2") taller. He is very tough on Kasahara due to her not inspiring enough trust in him, and the fact that he believes he did not give her adequate recruit training. Part of the reason why he pushes Kasahara so much is that he sees his old self in her, and he is angry that she is bringing that back to him with such emotional force, despite him trying to forget about it. He later realises that he hurt her just so he could protect his fragile self. He often worries about Kasahara and even defends her from comments from others.

Mikihisa Komaki
Voiced in Anime: Akira Ishida
Played in Live Action Film: Kei Tanaka
Mikihisa Komaki, like Dojo, is twenty-seven-years-old, is a member of the Library Task Force, and is ranked Librarian Second Class. He is typically seen smiling or laughing at his coworkers, especially concerning the conversations between Kasahara and Dojo. He is also one of the instructors in the Task Force. He often gives advice to Dojo or Kasahara in regards to the relationship between them, whether it be on a personal or professional level. He is partly responsible to Kasahara being drafted into the Task Force.

Hikaru Tezuka
Voiced in Anime: Tatsuhisa Suzuki
Played in Live Action Film: Sota Fukushi
Hikaru Tezuka is a member of the Library Task Force and is initially ranked Library Clerk First Class, but is later promoted to Library Clerk Supervisor. He is drafted into the Library Task Force at the same time as Kasahara, though shows himself to be much more capable in terms of knowledge gained in lectures, clerical work in the base's library, and in typical combat. He finds it hard to give credit to Kasahara in the beginning since she is not up to what he considers to be the standards of a Library Task Force member, though he later recognizes her improvement. Due to a comment by Dojo that he could learn some things from her, Tezuka asked Kasahara if she would date him, though she later turns him down. He has an older brother named Satoshi Tezuka, who is a part of the government's Future of the Library Committee.

Asako Shibasaki
Voiced in Anime: Miyuki Sawashiro
Played in Live Action Film: Chiaki Kuriyama
Asako Shibasaki is in the Library Task Force and is initially ranked Library Clerk First Class, but is later promoted to Library Clerk Supervisor. She works as an intelligence specialist, and is very good at gathering information. She is Kasahara's roommate, and after Kasahara joins the task force, Shibasaki helps her study the catalogs in the base's library through a form of negative reinforcement involving giving her candy when she gave the wrong answers which leads her to break out in pimples. Shibasaki often tells Kasahara things she finds out in regards to Kasahara and her direct superiors such as Dojo or Genda. She tries to give Kasahara advice and cheer her up when she is sulking due to events most often brought on by Dojo, though in the beginning of the series, she has slight feelings for him.

Ryusuke Genda
Voiced in Anime: Kanji Suzumori
Played in Live Action Film: Jun Hashimoto
Ryusuke Genda is the forty-three-year-old captain of the Library Task Force and is ranked Supervising Librarian Third Class. It is partly due to him that Kasahara is drafted into the Task Force, since he is the captain and had the final say. He is very strong, and Kasahara even thinks he has enough brawn to take on a bear. He is a veteran field commander and possesses great politic acumen; on one operation he ensured the Media Betterment Act forces secured books and magazines the Library Defense Force already had copies of so that they do not leave empty handed and in disgrace. He is willing to take great risks to achieve objectives, such as purchasing a building for declared use as a future library only so that the Task Force could raid the premises in order to rescue Kasahara and Inamine when they are taken hostage.

Kazuichi Inamine
Voiced in Anime: Haruo Sato
Played in Live Action Film:
Kazuichi Inamine is the commander of the Library Defense Forces who is in direct charge of the Kanto Library Base and has been involved with the conflict between the Media Betterment Committee and the Library Defense Force since the beginning. Twenty years prior to the beginning of the story, a major conflict between the two factions, called "The Hino Nightmare," occurred at the library in Hino, Tokyo where a group siding with the Media Betterment Act raided the library. Inamine was caught in the middle of the conflict and lost his wife and his right leg because of it.

From kotaku.com:

Library Wars, a new live action movie based on the anime and novel series of the same name, was released in theaters across Japan just over a week ago. It is everything from a war story to a light-hearted romantic comedy. But at its core, it remains an excellent social commentary on the dangers of censorship while still giving the viewer an engaging story.

Good – Fahrenheit 451 for a New Generation
Fahrenheit 451 is a 1953 novel that explores a society where books are outlawed and government censorship reigns. Library Wars presents a similar world, where after certain books become banned by the national government, local and regional governments created their own laws that allowed libraries the ability to protect any book, regardless of whether it was banned or not. After censorists begin attacking libraries and burning them, the libraries formed their own armies for the sake of protecting the books and knowledge within.

Set in this world, Library Wars is not only a social commentary on the dangers of censorship but also a personal story about a strong woman living life, hunting for love, and striving to find her place in the world. On the other hand, it is a war story brimming with action. In many ways, it is the perfect way to introduce the social issues in a way that will entertain both young and old, male and female alike.

Good – Positive Changes
In comparing the live action film to the anime, there more than a few changes—the worst of which involves the classic, cop turning in his badge and going rogue shtick. However, the rest are all for the better when making a two-hour adaptation of the story. To start with, there is far more action. Not only are the war scenes longer and more climactic, a hostage situation that ends within seconds in the manga is spun into a tense action scene that serves as the movie's climax.

The other major change is the "bad guy" of the story, which was little more than a mob in the anime, now has a face in the form of a terrorist leader responsible for the burning of a library, murder of civilians, and crippling of the Library Defense Force commander. The climax of the film becomes much more enjoyable as our heroes get to face down this villain and show what they are capable of on a more personal scale.

Good – The Perfect Cast
The most important thing when doing a live-action adaptation of an anime with well-known character designs is to make sure the actors match those designs. The female lead, Iku Kasahara (Eikura Nana), and the male lead, Atsushi Dojo (Okada Junichi), are particularly well cast. And despite being the same height in real life, the excellent direction always manages to accentuate a large height difference between the two (a plot point in the story).

The supporting cast is also quite well done with the characters being instantly recognizable to anyone who has watched the anime.

Bad – Military Issues
I understand that despite being at war, the censorists and Library Defense Force, don't really want to kill each other. After all, it looks bad in the press if either side is doing lots of killing. However, even I, a person who only knows about war through games and history books, know that when you have literal ranks of men approaching behind bullet shields, chucking a grenade or flashbang into their midst is going to do a hell of a lot more than shooting the shields with a sub machine gun. The lack of any kind of explosive in the war scenes is further accentuated when a flashbang is used near the end of the movie—making viewers wonder why they weren't used many times before.

More than that though, the battles are set up like trench warfare, where the enemies invade from barricade to barricade, pushing toward their objective. Of course, this is more than a little silly as all the defenses are set up to face the libraries’ main gates. But as we see numerous times that there are other, often unguarded entrances (not to mention the possibility of breaking down a wall), it makes both the censorist soldiers and the Defense Force seem laughably foolish—like two ranks of soldiers lining up to shoot at each other a la in the civil war.

Final Thoughts
Library Wars is a movie that manages the rare feat of being both deep and entertaining. On one hand, it addresses the implications and fallout of government-controlled censorship. On the other, it presents an entertaining movie filled with entertaining action, comedic moments, and deep characters. If you enjoy action movies, romantic comedies, or thought experiments centering around censorship, Library Wars will not disappoint.

Library Wars was released in Japanese theaters on April 27, 2013. There is currently no word on a Western release.

Help! I'm a Prisoner in the Library (A Jo-Beth and Mary Rose Mystery)
by Eth Clifford

Age Range: 9 - 12 years
Grade Level: 3 - 5
Series: A Jo-Beth and Mary Rose Mystery
Paperback: 112 pages
Publisher: HMH Books for Young Readers; Reprint edition 2004 (first published October 24th 1979)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0618494820

Mary Rose and Jo-Beth are sisters who hardly ever agree on anything, but they both feel as if this night will never end. First their car runs out of gas in an unfamiliar city and their father goes in search of a gas station. Then Jo-Beth makes Mary Rose go with her to find a bathroom and they stumble across a curious old library. And then, worst of all, they get locked in! But their troubles are just beginning. Is Jo-Beth right about the library being haunted by banshees? Or is there a logical explanation, as Mary Rose claims?

---

From blogspot.com:

Mary Rose and Jo- Beth's dad is called Last- Minute Harry for a reason. He always waits to do everything at the last minute. However, waiting until the last minute to fill the car with gas leaves them stranded on the road in the middle of a blizzard. Jo- Beth has to go to the bathroom so they enter a library, The Finton Memorial Library, which is also a home for the librarian. After they're done, they are so interested by a display of an old school wagon, that they forgot the closing time, which was right now. The librarian, Mrs. Finton, checks the library for kids, but doesn't find Mary Rose and Jo- Beth. Harry knocks on the door and claims his daughters are in there, but Mrs. Finton doesn't believe him and closes the door. She locks Mary Rose and Jo- Beth in and goes upstairs to sleep.

At first, the sisters panic. Jo- Beth, the imaginative one, tries to make a sign. Mary Rose, the one with common sense, tries to call the police. While Mary Rose is calling the police, Jo- Beth yells in the phone and the police department hangs up. Jo- Beth screws up on the sign and spells Library Liberry. Then, all of the sudden, a blackout starts, and all the tiny lights in the library go off.

The sisters panic again, until Mary Rose turns on a flashlight key chain. They find a piece of chocolate that they share and a mynah bird that loves to say "Off with their heads!" Suddenly, the sisters hear moaning and a thump.

The two go upstairs, believing it was a monster, and find what seems like a dead body on the floor. They soon realize it's alive when it wakes up. They realized it moaned when it tripped after the lights went off, and the thump was when it fell down. They help it by keeping it warm and help themselves to the fridge. It soon wakes up and stares at the sisters eating chicken legs next to the fridge.

Mrs. Finton is furious that that the sisters were in her house. However, she soon forgives them. They look at her collection of wooden storybook characters, save a stranded cat, and set off fireworks. Jo- Beth comes up with a plan to save the wooden storybook characters when Mrs. Finton is gone. She says they can turn the museum into a storybook museum. Mrs. Finton promises them that she'll try.

Later, the power is back on. The girls call Harry and he comes to the rescue. Later, a cameraman takes a picture of the abandoned sign: Help! I'm A Prisoner of the Liberry!

---

From epinions.com:

Pros:Two young girls trapped in the library with Mrs. Finton-is there an escape?
Cons:Leave the realism behind but look for the message within
The Bottom Line: Two girls trapped in a spooky old mansion, in the middle of a blizzard-what MORE could happen!?

Mary Rose and Jo-Beth Onetree are two ordinary sisters with the type of normal sibling rivalry that occurs in their age group. Mary Rose, at ten, is the oldest, and carries the weight of always having to keep an eye on Jo-Beth. Jo-Beth, at seven, is indignant at the superior role that Mary Rose plays in her life-after all, she is seven, not a baby! To compound problems, Mrs. Onetree is having a new baby tonight, and Mr. Onetree, also known as "last-minute Onetree" by Mrs. Onetree, has forgotten to fill the car with gas in the middle of a snow blizzard! The girls aren't happy about the new arrival, nor the fact that they are being shipped off to Aunt Madge's house for the week.

While driving through a snowstorm, Mr. Onetree runs out of gas, and tells the girls to stay put in the car while he travels with a gas can in search of fuel. Jo-Beth, however, is having a bathroom emergency, and the girls leave the car in search of a facility, only to come across a spooky Mansion, which appears to be a library as well.

Enter if you dare

The sign on the door read "The Finton Memorial Library For Children - Hours 9 to 5 Daily." The girls enter the lower level and immediately are taken back by the spooky decor, including something called a Kid Hack located on the first floor. Meanwhile, Mrs. Finton, the elderly woman who owns the home and mansion, is busy locking up the doors in the same process she does every evening, not knowing that the girls have stowed themselves away on the first floor among the artifacts, including the Kid Hack, where life-like dolls are dressed in 1850's garb, with spookly blue lights flicking about them.

Mr. Onetree arrives at the door claiming to want entrance and asking if Mrs. Finton has seen two young girls. Mrs. Finton, however, the old-school matriarch that she is, does not allow him entrance to the Library, and slams the door on him, claiming that no one is inside.

The girls do not hear any of this transaction, but a few minutes later the lights go out, and they hear a thud and moaning on the floor above them! They also hear a voice cackling at them, asking them over and over again to "state their business." Clutching each other, they suddenly see a swoop of wings and realize there is a pet Mynah bird in the library!

Upon further investigation, the girls climb the second floor and find Mrs. Finton unconscious on the floor, tripping over a figurine in the darkness. Knowing their CPR and basic health rules, they do not move her, but place warm blankets around her and apply ice packs to her swollen hand. This is the first time the girls are forced to work together, instead of constantly arguing and bickering.

Throughout the remainder of the evening, the blizzard rages, Mrs. Finton reawakens, and they are unable to communicate with the outside world to let the Onetrees know that the girls are okay. In the meantime, the girls explore the mansion with the formidable Mrs. Onetree, who is both icy yet shows signs of thawing each time she talks about how the library is being closed because it isn't modern enough. The girls explore a floor called Story Time, where life like dolls are set up, similar to a Wax Museum mode, to symbolize famous books, such as The Wizard Of Oz. The girls are frightened as each stage setting seems macabre and dark, until the morning arrives, and the library and Mrs. Finton take on a whole new light.

Lesson Learned

Throughout the evening, the girls learn more about each other through their combined fears in the library and more about working together than they have before. Jo-Beth gets a better understanding of how difficult it is for Mary Rose to constantly be a role model for her. Mary Rose gets a better understanding of how frustrating and fearful it can be for the youngest in the family, particularly when a new child is coming along to displace you in the hierachy!

Both girls learn much about the value of History and collectables and how something old isn't necessarily something unnecessary from Mrs. Finton. In fact, they give Mrs. Finton the idea to re-establish the library as a Story-Time Museum featuring the life-sized Kid Hack and all of the collected wax creatures.

Reader Recommendation

Written by Eth Clifford, this is a great book for the fourth through seventh grade genre, with just enough mystery to make it interesting, and just enough points to make it believable.

As a librarian in an older library, which indeed is part museum, I found this book on the stacks and just knew I had to read what sort of adventure was entailed within. I often wonder what would happen if I were to be locked within my library for the entire evening, up among the artifacts of my small town.

Hmm.. I think I'll take along some candles and decaf and try it out one evening. After all, I should be able to get out if I just turn the key.

Or won't I?

From pulver.co.uk:

2. The Spooky Blue Lights

Mary Rose made a quick decision.

"I have to see that wagon," she told her sister. "Meet me in that back room."

Without waiting for a reply, she ran off.

When Jo-Beth finally joined her, Mary Rose had already examined the display.

"It's a school bus," she explained. "From long ago. Only then it was called a 'kid hack.'"

"A what?"

"A 'kid hack.' And those big dolls sitting up there are dressed just the way the kids dressed in olden times."

"They look more like the store dummies you see in windows. Look at the way they're arranged, Mary Rose."

Two of the dolls appeared to be leaning slightly out of the wagon, as if they were watching the road. Two had their heads turned toward each other; they almost seemed to be having a conversation. Three sat one behind another, their eyes straight ahead.

"What does the sign say?" Jo-Beth asked eagerly.

Her sister read it aloud:

Early school buses were called kid hacks. They were ordinary wagons covered with either sailcloth or canvas; the students being taken to and from school sat on hard wooden benches. In bad weather, sailcloth curtains were dropped to protect the children from rain or snow or wind.
In winter, the wagons were heated by small stoves in which coal or wood or even corncobs were burned. Sometimes the stove was fastened in place under the floor of the kid hack. In some wagons, the small black stove was placed inside.
Later models were much fancier. Rubber tires replaced the wooden wheels; real glass windows were used instead of cloth curtains. Some kid hacks even boasted carpeting on the floor and lap robes to keep the children comfortable against the wintry blasts.

As Mary Rose read, Jo-Beth went around to the back of the display. Now she called, "There's a little stove in the wagon. And more old clothes on a bench."

Mary Rose went behind the display, too. She picked up some dried corncobs from the wagon floor and put them into the claw-footed little iron stove while Jo-Beth held a dress against herself, wondering if it would fit.

Neither of the girls heard the librarian moving about. And Vilmor Finton, the librarian, didn't realize anyone else was in the library. No one had come after it had begun to snow. Miss Finton had almost decided to close up early, but the sign outside listed the hours as 9 to 5 daily. Miss Finton was a woman who believed in carrying out her duties.

There were ten rooms downstairs - Grandfather Finton had always said that when he built a house, he built it big - and Miss Finton had been going from room to room. She did this each evening at closing time to make sure everyone was out of the building. She had looked into the rest room. Now she went to the room with the kid hack display. She often found children lingering here. She didn't bother to go into the room, just stood at the doorway and glanced inside quickly. Both girls were hidden from her view by the kid hack, and since Mary Rose and Jo-Beth had stopped talking for the moment, Miss Finton didn't hear anything, either. Satisfied, she walked away, and headed for the outside front doors.

Just as she was about to lock them, a man rapped sharply on the window. Miss Finton opened the door the merest crack, but even so snow began to whirl in.

"Yes. What is it?" Miss Finton asked impatiently.

"Excuse me. Are there two little girls in here by any chance? One is ten and the other is seven ..."

"The library is closed."

"They might be in the bathroom," the man pleaded. "Please. Will you just let me come in and look?"

Miss Finton had read many stories in the newspapers about people who came to one's door and asked to use the phone or made up excuses about accidents or whatever. Once inside, they attacked anyone foolish enough to let them in.

Miss Finton lived alone and liked it. And she wasn't afraid of staying in this big old house by herself. Just the same, she wasn't going to let this man put one foot inside the door. To begin with, Miss Finton had already checked the bathroom and the other rooms downstairs. She knew the building was empty, except for herself, of course.

Furthermore, this man's eyes were wild. He was breathing hard. And his voice was shaky.

"There are no children here," Miss Finton insisted, and she closed the door firmly in Mr. Onetree's face.

Then she locked and bolted the outside front doors and did the same with the inner doors. Miss Finton didn't believe in taking unnecessary chances. The double-locked doors, both inside and out, could be opened only with her keys.

Going back to the stairway, she stepped over the sign and walked briskly up the steps. Miss Finton did everything briskly.

She was about medium height. Her lively black eyes exactly matched her black hair, which was short and thick and bristled up from her head like the fur on an angry cat. Her hands seemed almost too large for her body, but Miss Finton was proud of them. They were good strong hands, and they served her very well.

At the top of the landing. Miss Finton took one last look at the floor below. Then she turned and went up another stairway that led to the third floor.

Miss Finton always checked the windows upstairs to make sure they were locked.

Satisfied that all was well, she went down again to the second floor, where she pressed a switch that turned off the big bright lights below. She pressed another switch that turned on small dim blue lights in each of the rooms downstairs, and on the landing.

When the lights went out so suddenly, the two girls were so shocked they couldn't speak. Jo-Beth gave a small gasp. Mary Rose realized two things almost at once. They had forgotten about the time. And they had forgotten about their father, who must have come back to the car with the gas by now.

"The librarian's gone home. I'll bet she locked us in!" Mary Rose nodded her head. "And Daddy doesn't even know where we are. And all because of you and your last-minute emergencies." She glared at her sister.

"See what you've gone and done to us."

"Me? Me? Who wanted to come in and take a look at this old wagon? Who was the one that made the secret wish?"

Jo-Beth shivered. "I don't like these spooky blue lights. They make everything so weird."

Mary Rose agreed. The big dolls in their strange clothes suddenly made her feel uneasy. Were the dolls moving? Weren't they getting bigger? Mary Rose felt scared. This was exactly the way she had felt the time her father had taken them to the wax museum.

"They're creepy," Jo-Beth whispered, almost as if she could read her sister's mind. "The way they keep staring. It's like they see something we can't."

"I hate these blue lights!" Even Mary Rose's face was beginning to look spooky in the dim-colored room. "I'm getting out of here!"

Jo-Beth dropped the dress she had been holding when the lights went out. She wanted to run, but it was hard to see where she was going. She came out from behind the display and crept along to the front door, with Mary Rose right behind her. At the door, she pulled and tugged at the knob.

"What good is that? The doors are locked."

"There she goes again, Miss Know-It-All," Jo-Beth thought, irritated.

She could see now that there was no use trying to get the doors open. But it made her feel as if she was doing something. "I know they're locked," she snapped. "I thought maybe I could loosen them up or something." She was so angry she kicked the door. "Whoever heard of locking a door inside with a key?"

"Maybe she has a lot of valuable things here. I'd do the same if I had something valuable," Mary Rose said thoughtfully.

Jo-Beth turned and stood with her back up against the door. The blue lights were even worse in here because the room was so big.

Shadows crouched down from the walls and moved closer and closer. Jo-Beth swallowed hard, but the hollow sensation in her stomach refused to go away.

Outside, the wind was tearing at the house, moaning and screaming, trying to get inside.

Jo-Beth was sure the wind was calling her name in a long, drawn-out shriek ... Jo Be-e-e-eth! Jo Be-e-e-eth!

She couldn't stand it anymore.

"Oh, Mary Rose," she sobbed. "We're never going to get out of here. The librarian's gone, and Daddy doesn't know where we are. Suppose it storms for days and days? We'll starve. They'll find our poor starved bodies ... "

Jo-Beth became so interested in what she was saying that she stopped crying. Wouldn't everybody be sad? And the new baby would never know what wonderful sisters he had had, especially Jo-Beth.

"No wonder Mommy calls you 'gloomy Gus,'" said Mary Rose. "You're so silly." She started to walk away from the door.

Jo-Beth promptly followed. "I don't want to stay here by myself. Where are you going?"

"I'm going to find the phone, dummy. You said at least one sensible thing. Nobody knows we're here. So I guess it would be a good idea to call somebody on the phone and tell them where we are."

[scene opens with a female student (with a label reading "DH924.1" affixed to her forehead), as she sticks her head between the books on one of the shelves and speaks directly to the camera]
STUDENT: I'm that book you need for your final paper. Yup, the most extensive work on your subject to date ... I'm thinking you won't pass without me, but thanks to a frantic procrastinator--
[cut to another female student looking at the shelves with an exasperated look on her face, as she "pushes" the other student aside to try and find another book]
STUDENT: [in voice over] I'm on the wrong shelf, where you won't be able to find me.
[cut back to the student speaking directly to the camera]
STUDENT: Good luck explaining to Mom why you need to stay an extra semester ... It's only sixty grand, right?
[cut to another female student (long black hair, black "United Colors of Benetton" t-shirt) as she pushes a book cart behind the other student (who still has her face stuck through the shelf)]
STUDENT: [in voice over] On your own, you're screwed.
[she taps the "DH924.1" student on the shoulder (who turns around), then points to the cart with a stern look on her face]
STUDENT: [in voice over] But thanks to library stack maintenance staff and their searches ...
[the student sits on top of the cart, as the library worker pushes her off camera]
STUDENT: [in voice over] I should be returned just in time for you to get that paper complete!
[cut to the library worker pushing the "DH924.1" student towards another shelf (the wheels of the cart squeaking loudly along the way), then she stops and points at a gap in the books ... so the "book" gets off the cart and sticks her face through the shelf]
["SMU Shelving | Sweeps | Searches | Duplicates smu dot edu slash libraries" appears on screen, as a version of the State Farm Insurance jingle plays]
NARRATOR: Dollar for dollar, no one protects you from procrastinating and the "needing a book but not being able to find it" like stack maintenance.
[cut to another female student looking at the shelves, when she taps the "book" on the shoulder ... she turns around, and the student checks her piece of paper against the label on the book's forehead, then nods her head and smiles]
[she turns to the camera and smiles, then the library worker peeks out from behind the shelf and gives the camera a thumbs up]
LIBRARY WORKER: Yay!
[everyone laughs]

From weebly.com:

Books with call numbers between A and PR 3999 are located on the second floor of the library.

Books with call numbers between PR 4000 and Z are located on the third floor of the library.

Books with call numbers between A...OVER and Z...SMOVR are located in the Oversize Section on the third floor of the library. (Oversize may be indicated by OVER, SMOVR or OVRSZ)

Books with call numbers ending with REF. are located in the Reference Room on the first floor of the library.

* Generally, your truck for shelving will have books that belong to only one floor.

A 'range' is an entire row of shelving. Each range has a label on each side to indicate which call numbers it houses. One side of a range has eight or nine bays.

A 'bay' is a vertical group of individual shelves (usually six but there is some variation).

To Begin Shelving

Take your cart to the correct floor.

Proceed to the first range. Check the range label to see which books belong there. Take those books off the cart and shelve them in order.

All of the books on the shelf should be lined up at the front edge of the shelf. Place the book you are shelving as far forward as you can, in line with the other books, and ensure that the bookend is secure.

Proceed to the next range and continue shelving until you have completed the truck.

Important Tips

All new Student Assistants will be given a training cart to complete in their first week of work. The training cart has two purposes: first, to provide hands-on practice, and second, to help us assess each student's understanding of the training they have been given.

Questions are strongly encouraged during the first week of training and beyond. The backbone of any good library is that every book is in the exact location it should be. Otherwise the service that we offer would fall apart.

Never guess how to shelve a book. If a point is not clear to you, we are all here to help. If you cannot find someone to help you, bring the book back down to shelve later.

Ensure that the books on either side of the one you are shelving are in the correct order. If the books are mixed up, take the time to rearrange them. If the problem is too extensive to fix while shelving, tell your Supervisor or Stacks Manager about it.

Take the time you need to shelve accurately. An experienced Student Assistant can shelve a full truck of books in approximately 45 minutes to an hour. When you are learning, you will need more time.

IDEA MAN: [whispers] For the first time, I ... I ... I really feel like a full-fledged super villain! Sniff!

From wikia.com:

The Superhomeys convince Empowered to disguise herself as a "sexy librarian" in order to serve as bait to draw out the supervillain Idea Man. Idea Man soon kidnaps her, planning to use her to activate a doomsday device he built using the brain of the presumed-dead supervillain Psychoblast, a powerful psionic with a librarian fetish. The Superhomeys arrive to defeat Idea Man and save Emp. Back at her apartment, she starts explaining the mission to Thugboy, but he's too distracted by her outfit to pay attention. Meanwhile, Major Havoc and Protean haven't turned off the audio feed from the bug in Emp's glasses, and voyeuristically listen in on her and Thugboy.

Sexy EMPOWERED librarian, p.1
by AdamWarren

The first of two pages from "Smart Girl," a story appearing in the second volume of Empowered, the "sexy superhero comedy" book I write and draw for Dark Horse Comics. As of the present day, the series features five 200+ page volumes, with a sixth hitting the shelves in September 2010 (and further books on the way thereafter).

The repro quality's a bit lower than normal, here, as I had to level-adjust on a 120dpi jpeg, instead of a 600dpi greyscale scan, as I normally do; also, I wound up relettering all of the wonkier word balloons seen here for greater clarity in the final version.

Several folks on the secret Empowered emailing list (who first saw these particular pages a few YEARS ago) pointed out to me that I went too far with Emp's admittedly over-the-top "Sexy Librarian" cosplay, and in fact had lost much of the less overtly provocative appeal of the "cute chick with eyeglasses." This is defensible within the context of the story, I feel, given that the tastes of the Empverse's "supervills" (whom she's supposed to be baiting, here) are rarely what one would define as "subtle" or "refined"...

Case Study No. 1852: Konomi Yuzuhara, Manaka Komaki and Tamaki Kousaka (student library workers)

Doki Doki Panic Library [ ?????????????? ] Game Sample - PC/Doujin
9:20
Doki Doki Panic Library is a PC/Doujin/Omake of sorts and is actually one of two extra games within the official "ToHeart2 XRATED" PC game, the other being "Super Sweets Scramble". It is certainly the better of the two games as well and was distributed by Leaf, who are basically Aquaplus' "adult game" branch, whereas Aquaplus mainly distributes games of all ages. A non-adult version of "ToHeart2" was released for PS2. I won't go into detail about "ToHeart2", so you can read about it below:

http://en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/ To_Heart_2

It features most main ToHeart2 characters (that can be played with) and a few staple modes (Fighting to the Finish Mode, Endless Mode, Versus Competition, CPU Competition, Options) as well as a rather comprehensive "Extra" mode, which hosts a variety of unlockables you can earn ranging from artwork to BGMs to even a little mini-game within a mini-game, "Awa Awa".

The game plays a bit like Bejeweled, but is somewhat original in its entirety. The object of the game is to connect three or more of the same book vertically or horizontally; so long as at least three match, they don't have to be in a completely linear fashion, so you can create little "r" shaped connections, etc. There are a variety of ability blocks as well as Wildcards of sorts. Some of these include heart blocks and bomb blocks (good blocks that remove titles from the field) or Blackhole blocks and Book blocks (Wildcards of sorts, they can prove to be helpful or complicate matters on your field), among others. There are also impedements like old book boxes. In order to break these various obstacles, you have to make numerous chains around them until you free the contents inside.

Each character also has a unique "specialty" block that gives them a particular advantage (or disadvantage) that other characters can't replicate. For example, the "main" heroine, Konomi Yuzuhara, can limit the amount of colors on the field to make easier chains, Yuuki Kusakabe can sing (she'll actually sing a song) and convert all her books into music books, Sasara Kusugawa makes many different types of books (she acts sort of as an eccentric character here and makes the game harder to play), etc. Besides the excellent little character animations for completing different chains, I'm glad to know that picking a character isn't entirely cosmetic. Speaking of the characters, they can be defeated in two ways; by either attacking them with non-stop chains and bringing their stack to the top, or getting the majority of 1000 books lined up on the shelf in the middle of the screen... whoever has less will be attacked by a relentless barrage of drops that is almost impossible to reverse. Characters execute special animations if you can do ultimate chains (around 10 or so) which are incredibly powerful and look neat.

The audio/visuals are respectable, but nothing particularly fancy. This mini-game is quite addictive and is probably good enough to stand as its own game or at least act as a good Doujin title. This mini-game also has "very slight" adult content, but I don't show anything within here that qualifies for that. This is a sample of some stuff in the game. Enjoy.

From wikipedia.org:

"To Heart 2" (Japanese: Tu Hato 2), stylized as "ToHeart2", is a Japanese romance visual novel developed by Leaf and published by Aquaplus. It was first released for the PlayStation 2 on December 28, 2004 as an all-ages title, and was followed by Microsoft Windows and PlayStation Portable versions. The Windows port is an adult game entitled "To Heart 2 XRATED," and it was released on December 22, 2005. This derives from the game's predecessor, To Heart, as it was originally released with adult content. The gameplay in "To Heart 2" follows a linear plot line, which offers pre-determined scenarios and courses of interaction, and focuses on the appeal of the female main characters.

Gameplay
"To Heart 2" is a "novel-type adventure game" in which the player assumes the role of Takaaki Kouno.

Its gameplay requires little player interaction as much of the game's duration is spent on reading the text that superimposes the screen, which represents the story's narrative and dialogue. To Heart 2 follows a linear plot line with multiple endings, and depending on the decisions that the player makes during the game, the plot will progress in a specific direction.

The game divides each school day of the storyline into four segments. These segments illustrate the events that occur during Takaaki's commute to school, during school, after school, and after he returns home at the end of each day. Depending on the time of the day and the player's actions, he or she may be presented one of three types of events: mandatory events, which occur automatically during certain points in the game's plot line; temporary events, which occur during certain periods of time only if specific conditions are met; or after school events, which occur at the end of each school day.

At the end of each school day, the player will be given the option to navigate to various locations within the game's setting. Each choosable location is accompanied by an image of a heroine in order to allow the choices to be easier to make. Every so often, the player will also come to a "decision point", where he or she is given the chance to choose from multiple options. Text progression pauses at these points, and depending on the choices that the player makes, the affection rate of the heroine associated with the event will either increase, decrease, or remain the same. This mechanism determines which direction of the plot the player will progress into, but influences the story only during Konomi's and Karin's plot lines.

"To Heart 2 XRATED," the Windows version of the visual novel, includes two additional minigames that serve to lengthen the experience the game provides; these minigames do not affect the main plot in any way. In both minigames, the player controls one of the heroines from To Heart 2's storyline, who is made available upon the completion of her scenario in the main portion of the game.

The first of the two minigames, titled "Super Sweets Scramble" ("Supaa Suiitsu Sukuranburu"), is a scrolling shooter in which the player's goal is to progress through a vertically scrolling level, while attacking enemies that resemble confectioneries and dodging their attacks.

The second of the two minigames, titled "Dokidoki Panic Library" ("Dokidoki Panikku Raiburarii"), is a puzzle game in which the player competes with an opponent for a higher score, by connecting three or more books of the same color and eliminating them from the screen.

Plot and characters
To Heart 2's story revolves around the male protagonist Takaaki Kouno, a high school student who has an aversion to most girls around him, and focuses on his interactions with his schoolmates.

The story begins on March 1, 2004, when Takaaki's parents leave for an overseas business trip. That morning, Konomi Yuzuhara, To Heart 2's main heroine and Takaaki's childhood friend, comes to meet Takaaki for their commute to school. Konomi is a cheerful and innocent, but childish girl. She is one year younger than Takaaki, who often views her as a younger sister. The two are also friends with Yuuji Kousaka, who is in the same class as Takaaki. Despite being the son of a wealthy and prestigious family, Yuuji has a frivolous and carefree personality, and often flirts with the girls at school. Takaaki later reunites with Tamaki Kousaka, another childhood friend, who had promised to return before being enrolled into a boarding school. Tamaki has a strong and dominant personality, and tends to act as an elder sister figure to those around her. She later transfers into Takaaki's high school upon the beginning of the new school year.

Throughout the story, Takaaki meets several other heroines attending his school. The first is Manaka Komaki, a timid and clumsy (but accommodating) girl who is the vice class representative of Takaaki's class. She oftens spends time in the school library's storage, and helps the library committee with general tasks. Similar to Takaaki, she is inarticulate around the opposite gender. Manaka is also close friends with Yuma Tonami, an aggressive girl who commutes to school by a mountain bike. Yuma sees Takaaki as a rival after she first met him at school, and often challenges him to various duels. She often laments her grandfather's insistence of having her take over the family business, and attempts to hide her family background from Takaaki. Karin Sasamori is a schoolmate of Takaaki's and the founder of the school's mystery club. Karin has a cheerful and energetic personality, and has an odd affection towards the occult and objects such as egg sandwiches. She first meets Takaaki early in the story, and later deceives him into joining the mystery club.

puzzle game with To Heart 2 characters

another cute and addictive puzzle game, with very simple control, just using arrow button to move your character
move around and slide books as you go, try to connect 3 or more book with same color to make them dissapear, try your best to clear your area, don't let the books reach the top
the books you've erased will sent to your opponent [as opened books which can be connected with other books], make a combo and keep send books to her, the one who can fill opponent area with the books is the winner

there also special items in the game, usually inside a box, to use it you must break the box by drop it few times and those special items will be released and activated automatically
they have special effects like clear your area, send more books to your opponent etc, some of them is very useful so better use it if you have chance

quite good puzzle game I say, graphic is nice and colorful, sound is good, some BGM has vocal track, the voice act is feel repetitive tough, gameplay is simple but quite addictive
overall, it's a fun game to play with your friends, or play alone for killing time
