[scene opens with Dr. Vincent Prize addressing the students in the audience from a podium in front of the library, with several members of the staff (in costume) standing behind him]
DR. PRIZE: Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. My name is Doctor Prize, and I wish to welcome you all to the Kirkpatrick Asylum for the Severely Confused.
[the audience laughs]
DR. PRIZE: I am the director of this esteemed institution, and may I say I'm glad you all showed up to take part in the annual Halloween tour ... It is a funny word, isn't it? "Asylum," I mean. Simply put, the world is a cruel dark place, ever ready to rend our pysches from our bodies. Or our wallets from our cold dead hands. Isn't that right, my friends?
[he turns and looks at the staff members behind him, who give no reaction]
DR. PRIZE: Truly, we are here to provide comfort and guidance to our inmates ... Excuse me, our residents. Those that some of you have seen fit to entrust to us.
FEMALE VOICE: [from off camera] I wouldn't say "entrust" ...
DR. PRIZE: [yelling] It is too late for such sentiments, my friend! We have your money, your mother, and a signed contract!
[the audience laughs, when a hunchbacked man runs up and taps him on the shoulder]
IGOR: Sir! Sir!
DR. PRIZE: What is it, Igor?
IGOR: Sir ... "Eye-gor," sir.
[he starts to twitch]
IGOR: Is it ... time for my medicine yet?!
DR. PRIZE: What? No! This is not the time nor place! Get outta here!
[he puts his head down and exits]
DR. PRIZE: Excuse me, ladies and gentlemen. Now, where was I? Oh yes, I would like to introduce you to some of my staff, and a couple of our model residents.
[he looks behind him]
DR. PRIZE: Doctor Laurie! Doctor Laurie!
[a female African American staff member steps forward]
DR. PRIZE: She is our number two doctor at the asylum. Uh, she is our ward doctor.
DR. LAURIE: [deadpan] Yes, and may I say it's wonderful to see you all ...
DR. PRIZE: Yes yes, do sit down, Doctor Laurie ...
[she steps back]
DR. PRIZE: That's a good girl ... Next, may I present to you our psychiatrist, Stephanie King.
[a woman wearing pancake makeup and walking with a limp approaches the podium, and pushes Dr. Prize out of the way]
STEPHANIE KING: Good evening, it's so nice to see you all. Please, enjoy the worthy doctor's ... prattle. It won't last much longer, I assure you. If you have any questions, come to me. I'm the one with all the answers.
[she steps back, as Dr. Prize resumes his position at the podium]
DR. PRIZE: [under his breath] Harlot.
STEPHANIE KING: [turns] Giggolo!
DR. PRIZE: Now, may I introduce you to--
[the audience laughs]
DR. PRIZE: Silence! Now, may I introduce you to my best ward nurses.
[he looks behind him]
DR. PRIZE: Misses Legosi! Mister Karloff! Front and center!
[a woman in a straitjacket and a man wearing green makeup approach the podium]
DR. PRIZE: These two assist in care for residents. They both have been here for years. Misses Legosi is a little ... batty, shall we say. And Mister Karloff has issues with loud noises and bright lights. He really detests lightning.
[he looks over at the nurses]
DR. PRIZE: Now sit down!
[they turn to leave, when Doctor Prize takes a large book from behind the podium and drops it loudly on the ground, causing Mister Karloff to fall and crawl up into the fetal position]
DR. PRIZE: Ha ha, I could not resist!
[the audience laughs]
MALE VOICE: [from off camera] You're a cruel man!
DR. PRIZE: [yelling] Be careful! You never know when you might find yourself at our tender mercies!
[he quickly composes himself]
DR. PRIZE: I mean our tender care ... Now, on with the introductions. Mister Poe, please step forward.
[a large male resident steps forward]
DR. PRIZE: Remove your earplugs. It's alright, it's safe.
[he slowly takes his earplugs out, then starts freaking out]
MR. POE: [screaming] Do you hear it?! I hear it! The heart! It beats, it beats!
DR. PRIZE: Belosi! Karloff! Take Mr. Poe away!
[the nurses step forward and lead him off camera]
MR. POE: Please, Doctor Coleman! I'll suffocate!
DR. PRIZE: [calmly] My apologies, ladies and gentlemen. I think this time up here is taking its toll on some of our residents ... And speaking of which, may I introduce you to another one of our residents.
[he looks behind him]
DR. PRIZE: Miss Jackson, please step forward.
[a young lady walks up to the podium and snuggles up next to Doctor Prize]
MISS JACKSON: Hello, Doctor Prize. I haven't seen you today, and I do miss you so. We haven't ... "talked" in nearly three days!
[as Miss Jackson begins stroking Doctor Prize's beard, his wife steps forward]
MRS. PRIZE: [coldly] My dear, you seem to have attracted yourself another female admirer ...
DR. PRIZE: [yelling] Karloff! Karloff! Come get Miss Jackson!
MRS. PRIZE: Yes, Mister Karloff, remove her from my husband!
[the male nurse leads her off camera, as Igor comes back and shoots off a noise maker (for no apparent reason) then leaves]
DR. PRIZE: I have no doubt this lovely lady is my wife, Jo Prize ...
[he tries to put his hand on her shoulders, but pushes him away]
MRS. PRIZE: Get your filthy hands off me!
[she storms off, so Doctor Prize returns to the podium]
DR. PRIZE: Now, I hope you enjoy the tour of our little asylum ...
[a ghost suddenly appears above the audience, moaning and wailing, as Igor rushes up to grab Doctor Prize]
IGOR: Doctor Prize! Doctor Prize! It was ... the banshee! Somebody is gonna die tonight!
DR. PRIZE: You fool! She is nothing more than a flimsy urban legend! Now get outta here!
IGOR: Yes, master ... Um, master, is it time for my medicine yet?!
DR. PRIZE: Yes yes, you idiot. Go to my study and I will be there directly.
[Igor claps his hands in glee and runs off]
DR. PRIZE: Get outta here ...
[he turns back to the audience]
DR. PRIZE: It is so hard to find good help these days! Pay no mind to him ... "Banshee!" I am sure it was one of our more troubled residents. Now, please embark on a voyage of discovery, at the Kirkpatrick Asylum for the Severely Confused.
[he leaves, then somebody can be heard screaming]
DR. PRIZE: [from off camera] Hey! What're you doing? Get away from me! Stop it, no noooo!!

From ucmo.edu:

What do private eyes, detectives and bloodhounds have to do with the James C. Kirkpatrick Library? Ok, leave out the bloodhounds. Still can't figure it out? It has everything to do with solving a Murder at the Library!

This entertaining murder mystery event was the brainchild of Alice Ruleman, access services librarian, and was designed to help celebrate JCKL's 10th Anniversary this past March. It was also a unique tool to teach students a thing or two about searching materials within the library and familiarizing patrons with what the library offers.

The event attracted approximately 150 students who buckled down to solve the mystery in teams of 10. The novice gumshoes set about the task of solving the tricky murder of one Franklyn Lloyd-Wright, just one of a cast of many fictional characters in this whodunit. Ms. Ruleman said at least 22 individuals volunteered, including JCKL's own Les Lynam, Carol Smith, and Dean Mollie Dinwiddie. Other colorful characters were portrayed by UCM faculty and students.

The mystery began when a storyline was acted out by cast members. Then each team was given a set of instructions which had students scouring the library from top to bottom in search of additional clues. Simultaneously, students were learning how to use the library's resources. While one team was busy checking online course reserves, title or author searches, or discovering where oversize books were stored, another team was busy finding clues among government documents or the microfilm cabinets. Other areas for clues included the bestsellers corner, the Clyde Bulla piano, the News Center, the reference desk, and the study rooms. The location of clues took participants to all floors of the library including the pitch black basement where flashlights were a necessity.

Participants of the first team to correctly identify the "killer" were awarded a $20 gift certificate each to the UCM Bookstore. Congratulations gumshoes! Second place winners received $5 gift certificates. Oh, and whodunit? One Miranda Alexander Graham Bell (portrayed by Professor of English, Miriam Fuller).

Ms. Ruleman said the murder mystery was quite successful and may grow in popularity. A survey taken shortly after the event suggests that participants would welcome future murder mysteries as a recurring activity at the JCKL.

Thrall & Zorga in... Let's Ask A Librarian

[scene opens with black and white footage of one caveman running up to another caveman digging around some rocks]
NARRATOR: Friend, have you ever needed help finding books, articles, or videos for assignments? Have you ever been in an argument with a friend who cannot show proof that you saw a sabertooth jackalope?
[the two begin grunting and arguing with one another]
NARRATOR: Meet two modern cavemen with a question that needs answering. Come, let's journey with Thrall and Zorga in ... "Let's Ask a Librarian!"
[one of the cavemen storms off, as the other goes back to digging through the rocks]
NARRATOR: Through the "Ask a Librarian" service, you can reach a librarian who will help you locate materials, verify facts, use databases, and teach you how to find information. You can ask one of our talented librarians a question, using one of the new marvels in technology ... the telephone.
[the caveman picks up one of the rocks and puts it to his ear]
REFERENCE LIBRARIAN: [from off camera] Library Reference.
[the caveman reacts as if the librarian is speaking through the rock/phone to him, and throws it away in fear]
THRALL: Aaaaah!
[cut to the caveman chiseling his question into a stone tablet]
NARRATOR: Here, Thrall uses the online "Ask a Librarian" form to email his question to the library ...
[once he is finished ("Name: Thrall, Question: How big sabertooth jackalope?"), he hangs the tablet in a nearby tree, as a bird picks it up and (presumably) flies it back to the library]
[cut to the other caveman wandering around the library parking lot]
NARRATOR: Now, let's see what Zorga's up to at the library ...
[he runs towards the front door, as several nearby patrons scream and run at the sight of him]
NARRATOR: Librarians will provide help as needed in the library.
[cut to Zorga inside the library, jumping up onto the chair in front of the reference desk and gesticulating wildly at the young African American female librarian]
NARRATOR: Simply walk up to the Reference desk, and a librarian will assist you.
[the librarian looks down at her schedule, which reads "2pm Zorga. 1. Information on jackalopes. 2. How to make the wheel. 3. Where does fire come from"]
NARRATOR: For faster service, Zorga has made an appointment ahead of time. You can request a specific reference librarian to help you.
[Zorga begins pantomiming antlers and large teeth]
REFERENCE LIBRARIAN: You want information on jackalopes?
[Zorga grunts in the affirmative]
REFERENCE LIBRARIAN: Okay ...
[cut to the librarian looking through the stacks while Zorga follows]
NARRATOR: Making an appointment with a reference librarian is like having your own personal librarian.
[she shows him a book, so Zorga bops her over the head with his club (knocking her unconscious) and carries her out of the library]
NARRATOR: They will pair you up with someone familiar with your topic.
[cut to the librarian being dragged by the feet back to Zorga's cave]
NARRATOR: "Ask a Librarian" is a service the library provides for Yavapai College students, staff, and faculty.
[cut to Thrall and Zorga arguing again]
NARRATOR: The email and telephone service is especially helpful for those in a distance-learning program.
[Thrall shows Zorga the reference answer he received to his question (via stone tablet)]
NARRATOR: They will also gladly assist anyone in the world with their research needs.
[cut to the librarian regaining consciousness, then slowly standing up while holding Zorga's club]
NARRATOR: Remember, while they will guide you to resources that will help you, they will not do your work for you.
[she walks up behind them and bonks them both on the head, knocking them out]
REFERENCE LIBRARIAN: [laughs and throws the club over her shoulder]

[cut to the reference librarian reading from a book, while Zorga and Thrall sit and listen]
REFERENCE LIBRARIAN: Sit!
[she waves the club at them to keep them quiet]
REFERENCE LIBRARIAN: Okay now ... The jackalope! Mythical beast of the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains.
THRALL: Unnh!
REFERENCE LIBRARIAN: Combining a jackrabbit's body with deer spike antlers or antelope horns. The jackalope is the favorite subject for picture postcards in its mounted state, as a taxidermist's joke. Jackalopes are said to be extremely shy, and when stirred to anger, they will charge viciously.
THRALL: Ohhh!
REFERENCE LIBRARIAN: And they can be brought down with a buffalo gun ...
THRALL: Oh!
REFERENCE LIBRARIAN: The "warrior rabbit" of Nebraska and South Dakota has pheasant wings and a tail, in addition to horns. In the Southwest, the beast is often termed "antelabbit" ...
THRALL: Ahhh!
REFERENCE LIBRARIAN: The origins of the American jackalope tradition are obscure, although much of the initial activity seems to have centered in Wyoming ...
THRALL: [laughs]

"Ain't Got Rhythm"
From The Disney Channel original series "Phineas and Ferb"
Episode: Dude, We're Getting the Band Back Together

[Phineas and Ferb enter the Tri-State Area Public Library]
PHINEAS: Who would have thought that a drummer from a rock 'n roll band would end up in a place so quiet?
[Phineas stops as he hears the rhythmic sounds of a rubber stamp hitting the front desk, then looks at his Love Handel poster to compare it to the male librarian he sees]
PHINEAS: Say, could it be?
[they walk up to the librarian]
PHINEAS: Pardon me. Would your name be Swampy, ex-drummer for the band Love Handel?
SHERMAN: That, my friend, was a past life ...
[he points to his nametag]
SHERMAN: The name's Sherman. Why you asking?
PHINEAS: Because they're reforming for one night only! It's a celebration of our parents' anniversary.
[Sherman continues stamping his books, barely paying attention to the conversation]
SHERMAN: Well, that sounds charming, boys, but I-I haven't played drums since the accident. Fell asleep in a metronome factory, when I awoke I'd completely lost my sense of rhythm. I've been hanging out here ever since ...
[Phineas stares at him stamping the books, then starts singing along with the beat]
PHINEAS: So you're saying that you don't have rhythm, but listen what you're doing right there! With that stamp and a book, you've got a real nice hook! Sounds to me like you've got rhythm to spare!
SHERMAN: [obliviously starts singing along] I have no idea what you're talking about, I've got as much rhythm as that chair. What happened to me was a tragedy, but I don't have to be a millionaire. Look, I got a sweet deal going on here, I've got all the books that I can read.
[cut to two old women sitting at the desk reading]
SHERMAN: All these sweet old ladies and this carpet from the 80's, what more could a librarian need?
[one of the old women shushes Sherman]
SHERMAN: [quietly sings] Besides, I ain't got rhythm. No, I ain't got rhythm. Said, I ain't got rhythm. I ain't got rhythm!
[Ferb is snapping his fingers and shaking a pencil holder to the rhythm of Sherman's stamping, while the other patrons around the library are banging their books to the same beat]
PHINEAS: You're kidding me right? You're-you're kidding me! Don't you see what you were doing right then? That's a wicked groove you were starting to move. Mister, you got rhythm times ten!
[Sherman places the books on a cart and starts reshelving them, but subconsciously starts slapping each book to the same beat]
SHERMAN: I think perhaps that your not listening. I find it tedious to repeat. It's no big crime. I just can't keep time. I'm telling you I lost the beat!
[the patrons continue pounding their books on the table to the beat]
SHERMAN: I don't need my face on t-shirts, or hit a power chord guitar ...
[Sherman opens and closes the drawers of the card catalog to the beat]
SHERMAN: They were screaming my name, I guess it's a shame, but I don't need to be a rock star!
[Sherman starts drumming on his desk with a ruler and his nameplate]
Besides, I ain't got rhythm. No, I ain't got rhythm. Said, I ain't got rhythm. I ain't got rhythm! I ain't got rhythm!
PHINEAS: Sounds like rhythm to me!
SHERMAN: No, I ain't go rhythm!
PHINEAS: [motioning to the patrons] Seems like they all agree!
SHERMAN: Said, I ain't got rhythm!
PHINEAS: But you're laying down some funky syncopation!
[Ferb pushes a full drum set in front of Sherman, and he starts to play]
SHERMAN: I ain't got rhythm!
PHINEAS: But you got that beat!
SHERMAN: No, I ain't go rhythm!
PHINEAS: [looking at the patrons under the desk] Look at them, they're stomping their feet!
SHERMAN: Said, I ain't go rhythm!
PHINEAS: It's time for you to rock a brand new generation!
[all of the patrons get up on their desks and continue singing]
PATRONS: Brand new generation!
SHERMAN: [closing his eyes] Gonna rock a brand new generation ... because I ain't got rhythm!
[Sherman stops and realizes what he's been doing]
OLD LADY: Would you just go join the band?
[Phineas and Ferb wheel the drum set out of the library, as Sherman excitedly keeps playing]
SHERMAN: Hey! Hey, lookit that! Hey, I got rhythm!

From wikia.com:

Sherman, better known by his stage name "Swampy," is a librarian and former drummer of the 90s hair band Love Händel. Sherman was a part of the band for as long as is known, though infighting and other complications lead to the band sizzling out and going their separate ways. The band would reunite a decade later to celebrate a wedding anniversary between Linda Flynn and Lawrence Fletcher.

Sherman first known event in life was being a member of the band Love Händel during the 1990s alongside Danny and Bobbi Fabulous. Sherman donned the pseudonym "Swampy" and played as the band's drummer. Love Händel met generally critical acclaim - their song, "You Snuck Your Way Right Into My Heart", was a huge success, topping the charts for eleven consecutive minutes.

After the hit song, the band began to sizzle out of the spotlight. Sherman and Love Händel began to perform at smaller and smaller venues and began to in fight. Sherman especially had heated hatred with Fabulous, who generally was his opposite and hated his slovenly behavior. The fan base continued to dwindle and the band decided to break up. They performed a farewell concert, in which they spotlighted Linda Flynn and Lawrence Fletcher, who eventually would wed on June 15. Afterward, the band broke up and went their separate ways. ("Dude, We're Getting the Band Back Together")

After the band went their separate ways, Sherman either began working at or stumbled upon a metronome factory. He fell asleep and awoke seemingly "losing" his sense of rhythm.

Afterward, Sherman began to work at the Tri-State Area Library, seeing the change as conformable, enjoying the 1980s era carpeting, the access to literature, and the kind elderly ladies he worked aside. ("Dude, We're Getting the Band Back Together")

After working at the library for over a decade, Phineas Flynn and Ferb Fletcher, the sons of the couple Love Händel spotlighted at the farewell concert, approached him wondering if he was the "Swampy" of the band. Sherman informed them of his detachment with the band anymore and they asked if would join the band in a reunion concert for their parent's wedding anniversary.

Sherman told them of his rhythm issues, though Phineas was disbelieving due to his rhythmic beating of books, and attempted to convince him otherwise through song. Sherman, throughout it, continued to deny his abilities with rhythm, though eventually came to realization and accepted to join back for the reunion concert.

When the band reunited at the boys' garage, Sherman was the only one to refuse to wear the old outfit again. While they were waiting for Linda Flynn to return to the house and begin, Sherman began eating a slice of cake that had been thrown out. Danny pointed this out in shock, Sherman arguing you couldn't "let good cake go to waste." Fabulous made a comment after this that insulted Sherman, and they began to argue. Danny was going to leave and break up the band again, but the roar of the crowd made want to continue. The band started the performance as Linda arrived. ("Dude, We're Getting the Band Back Together")

Personality:

Sherman has shown signs of professionalism and sophistication. His career as a librarian and his stated enjoyment of access to "all the books [he] can read" shows that he takes interest in literature and therefore has a sense of refinement. ("Dude, We're Getting the Band Back Together")

Despite this, however, Sherman has as well displayed several signs of slovenliness. During practice for the reunion concert, he ate a piece of cake that had been thrown out, giving the excuse "You can't let good cake go to waste." Since Love Händel's breakup, he has gained a "beer belly" and generally seems somewhat pudgy than his more youthful days. ("Dude, We're Getting the Band Back Together")

Other than the displays of sloveliness, Sherman as well has showed signs of being rather layed back and lazy. Sherman's current attire best demonstrates this - his sleeves are rolled up, his tie is loose, and he appears to wear a suit without a jacket. This behavior and his slovenly attitude leads him to have constant bickering with his band member, Bobbi Fabulous. ("Dude, We're Getting the Band Back Together")

Sherman appears to take great enthusiasm in his drumming capabilities. When he was younger, while performing, he was always seen smiling and being very excited. When he seemingly lost his sense of rhythm, he tried to cope by taking on a new career as a librarian, convincing himself it had enough perks and he didn't need to be famous. When he reestablished his sense of skill, he was once again vibrant and performed happily in both the reunion concert and the performance for Doofenshmirtz's flashback. ("Dude, We're Getting the Band Back Together", "Thaddeus and Thor")

Background Information:

* Sherman is based off of Phineas and Ferb co-creator Jeff "Swampy" Marsh. His design is a parody of Marsh's, while his nickname "Swampy" is based off that of Marsh's own nickname. The point of spoofing Marsh, as well as other co-creator and executive producer Dan Povenmire and writer Bobby Gaylor, in the form of Love Händel members was to humorously mention the fact that all three of them were themselves members of bands throughout the years.[1]
* "Swampy" first appeared in the Season 1 episode "Dude, We're Getting the Band Back Together." He and the rest of Love Händel would later appear in the Season 2 episode "Thaddeus and Thor" to perform the song Couldn't Kick My Way Into Her Heart in Heinz Doofenshmirtz's flashback.
* Sherman's voice is performed by Steve Zahn, an American actor and comedian who has performed in prime time shows such as Monk and Friends and films such as Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Rescue Dawn and Chicken Little.
* Ain't Got Rhythm, a song performed in the show by Sherman, was nominated for an Emmy for songwriting in 2008. However, it (and the as well nominated Theme Song) did not win.
* He is the one from Love Händel who seems to have changed the most since the 90's, the differences being that his hair got shorter and began graying, he got a goatie, and he put on some weight.
* He wore an earring during "Dude, We're Getting the Band Back Together" and in "Thaddeus and Thor", but not in any other episode, nor at their farwell concert.

VOX: Welcome to Vox System. How may I help you?
[he turns, slightly stunned, but addresses the figure as if "he" were an actual person]
ALEX: Oh, I didn't see you there ...
VOX: Always seem to have that effect. How may I help you, sir?
[Alex points to a large silver structure in the middle of the room]
ALEX: What is that thing?
VOX: That is my photonic memory core, or PMC, as we say in the trade ...
[Alex notices Vox "fade" in and out, and tries to understand what is going on by looking behind the screen]
VOX: [waves at him from the other side] Over here, sir.
ALEX: What are you?
VOX: I'm the Fifth Avenue Public Library Information Unit. Vox Registration NY-dash-114.
[he displays a holographic image of his "license", which reads "NY-114"]
VOX: How may I help you?
[Alex pauses, still trying to process what he is seeing]
ALEX: Oh, a stereopticon of some sort.
VOX: Stereopticon?
[Vox seems initially confused by the term, but it quickly turns to a look of bemusement]
VOX: Oh, no sir. I am a third-generation fusion pod photonic with verbal and visual link capabilities connected to every database on the planet.
ALEX: Phototonic?
VOX: [speaking slowly] A compendium of all human knowledge.
ALEX: Oh ...
VOX: Area of inquiry?
ALEX: Do you know anything about physics?
VOX: Ah, accessing "Physics" ...
[he brings up a "file" marked with the image of a molecule]
ALEX: Mechanical engineering?
[Vox brings up another file]
ALEX: Dimensional optics. Chronography. Temporal causality. Temporal paradox.
[the once-eager look on Vox's "face" seems to drain away]
VOX: Time travel?
ALEX: Yes.
VOX: [matter of factly] Accessing "Science Fiction" ...
ALEX: No no, practical application ... My question is, why can't one change the past?
VOX: [slowly] Because one cannot travel into the past ...
[Vox begins to "walk" away]
ALEX: What if one could?
VOX: One cannot.
[Alex runs up to catch him]
ALEX: Um, excuse me ... This is something you should trust me on.
[Vox blandly begins pulling up more files]
VOX: Accessing the writings of Isaac Asimov, H.G. Wells, Harlan Ellison, Alexander Hartdegen--
ALEX: Oh, tell me about him!
VOX: Alexander Hartdegen, 1869 to 1903. American scientist given to eccentric postulation. Bound writings include "Treatise on the Creation of a Time Machine."
ALEX: Tell me about the time machine.
VOX: "Time Machine" was written by H.G. Wells in 1894. It was later adapted to a motion picture by George Pal and a stage musical by Andrew Lloyd Weber which ran on Broadway for twenty years.
ALEX: No, that-that's not what I mean ...
VOX: Would you like to hear selections from the score?
ALEX: No.
VOX: [singing] There's a place called tomorrow, a place of joy ...
[several holograms of Vox appear and surround Alex, still singing]
VOX: Not of sorrow! Can't you see, it's a place for you and--
[Alex starts walking away]
ALEX: Thank you, that's quite enough.
[Vox re-appears to him as a single hologram]
VOX: Will there be anything else?
ALEX: Uh, no no. I-I think I'll have better luck in a few hundred years.
[as Alex leaves, Vox gives him the Spock hand signal]
VOX: Live long and prosper!
[Vox drops the fake smile and rolls his eyes]

He visits the New York Public Library where he talks with Vox 114, the library's holographic, artificially intelligent librarian. He is given information on H. G. Wells, Isaac Asimov, Harlan Ellison and even one of his own papers, but the library does not have any information on time travel theory; Vox states that such a thing is impossible.

From earthlink.net:

THE TIME MACHINE

Wells, Simon (Director). The Time Machine. United States: DreamWorks, 2002.

Starring: Orlando Jones (Vox, future hologram librarian); Guy Pearce (Alexander Hartdegen)

Based on the Novel: Wells, H.G. The Time Machine. London: William Heinemann, 1895.

In the year 2300, visitors to the NYC Public Library (yes, the lions are still there) are greeted by a flat hologram named Vox who conducts a strange reference interview (missing the point, of course, but he does sing show tunes; how cool is that?). 800,000 years later, when the library and books are in ruins, he still provides information and carries the library in his 2-D head. Story hour is his recitation of Tom Sawyer. Notable quote: "If you don't like the answers you should avoid asking the questions." (The book differs a great deal; books have turned to dust and are otherwise not mentioned, and no libraries.)

[Lazarus enters the school library]
LIBRARIAN: [from off camera] Quiet!
[Lazarus continues, when the steps on the stairwell leading up to the second floor of the library begins floating by themselves]
LIBRARIAN: [from off camera] No talking, please!
[Lazarus captures a ghost (causing the steps to return to their normal position), when the ghost of the old female librarian suddenly rises up from behind the front desk and floats towards him]
LIBRARIAN: I've had my eye on you, young fellow! Oh yes, I'm busy busy busy! But not too busy to seize upon a promising young library monitor!
[she continues floating around the room in front of Lazarus]
LIBRARIAN: A noisy rascal, I don't deny ... but some of my best monitors have always had a bit of "bang" and "clatter" about them!
[Lazarus walks up to the desk with a look of bewilderment]
LIBRARIAN: Vim's the word, or - thesaurus ascending - spark! Verve! Vigor!
LAZARUS: Hey, listen to me, lady--
[she floats over and shushes him]
LIBRARIAN: Shh shh shh! Silence is golden, monitor ... And what else is golden, hm? The monitor's pledge! Lunchtime breaks and after school library time, your golden rule!
LAZARUS: Yeah, but I'm not even a--
LIBRARIAN: Shh!
LAZARUS: I haven't said I'm--
LIBRARIAN: Nonsense! Think not what your school can do for you, but what you can do for your school!
[she floats into the air and begins singing]
LIBRARIAN: Sing hey hey hey, for old Montsaye!
[Lazarus points his gun into the air and fires, momentarily silencing the librarian]
LIBRARIAN: [calmly] Indeed, time for your first assignment. Are you ready? Silence isn't that golden ... This is what you came for! Do it! Are you ready?
[Lazarus says nothing]
LIBRARIAN: Books borrowed and never returned! Somewhere in the school building, find and return - nursed to a fit state of shelf - the following items.
[Lazarus gives her a dirty look]
LIBRARIAN: Firstly, "An Astral Odyssey, the Diaries of Professor Peter Richmond." And, missing from our history section, "The Black Hawk, the Medieval Legend" ...
[she flies up into the air and disappears]
LIBRARIAN: Begone!

[...]

[Lazarus finds "The Black Hawk" (labelled in his inventory as "History Book") inside a school bus in the parking lot, and returns it to the front desk of the library]
LIBRARIAN: Thank you, young monitor! You're a credit to Montsaye!
[she picks up the book and inspects it]
LIBRARIAN: Ah yes, a true story ... Return it to our History section.
[she hands the book back and disappears, so Lazarus heads for the stacks on the second floor and places it in the correct area, causing him to teleport to an old castle]
LIBRARIAN: [from off camera] Sir William Hawksmoor, the origin of the legend of Black Hawk's Night. And for a time in Europe, the Feast of Black Hawk's Night was as important as our Halloween or Mardi Gras.
[Lazarus starts climbing the stairs, where the librarian is floating above him]
LIBRARIAN: Eventually, it became a happy "family festival", but it began as a dark anniversary ... the one night of the year when parents never dared to leave their children alone.
[she starts floating away, so Lazarus follows her]
LIBRARIAN: In England in the thirteenth century, there lived a legendary knight, Sir William Hawksmoor. To some, he was "The Royal Hawk," a loyal and brave crusader, fearless protector of the King. To most, though, and they would never breathe it in his presence, he was "The Black Hawk." Valiant, yes, but deadly!
[she starts floating in the middle of the room]
LIBRARIAN: At home, an aristocrat to be feared. Abroad, a bloodthirsty warrior, slaughtering wildly in the name of King and God. Just as with his favorite hunting bird, the King would go nowhere without his protector, Hawksmoor. The knight became a great favorite in the royal court, loved for his bravery and unswerving loyalty. Admired for his charm and wit. Frank and fearless in his conversations with the King, he became an increasingly valued counselor.
[Lazarus continues watching her, as the librarian has her back turned to him]
LIBRARIAN: But, such a close affiliation with the King was doomed to breed envy and political enemies ... A powerful group began plotting against The Black Hawk. They had to decide which of their feelings was the stronger, their hatred or their fear.
[the librarian disappears, as Lazarus watches a group of knights approach Sir Hawksmoor on the lower level]
HAWKSMOOR: You?! The King will avenge this treachery! This slaughter!
KNIGHT: The King? Every last arrangement, which tiny throat to cut first, the undressing of your ... lady.
[Hawksmoor gets a look of defeat on his face]
KNIGHT: Everything was commanded by the King.
[they surround him, as Lazarus checks his notebook (which reads "Need to find two books. So 'Wormboy' is some medieval prince."), then is suddenly transported back to the library ... so, he heads back to the front desk, where the librarian is waiting for him]
LIBRARIAN: Somewhere in the school, a second book to find ... Begone!

[...]

[Lazarus finds "An Astral Odyssey" (labelled in his inventory as "Diary") and returns it to the front desk of the library]
LIBRARIAN: Ah yes, "An Astral Odyssey, the Diaries of Professor Peter Richmond" ...
[she picks up the book and inspects it]
LIBRARIAN: What's this? This is an outrage! Just look at it, monitor, just look at it!
[she floats around the room in anger]
LIBRARIAN: One page remaining, the final entry, and the rest ... torn asunder! Shocking's the word!
[she stops floating and seems to think to herself]
LIBRARIAN: Now, let me see ... Who was the last borrower? Oh yes, they won't fool this librarian!
[she looks at the back of the book, then gives out a gasp]
LIBRARIAN: Shock upon shock! A member of the faculty ... Is nothing sacred? The vandal, the phillistine, is our own Professor Brook!
LAZARUS: He may be guilty of a lot worse than that, ma'am.
[she floats towards him]
LIBRARIAN: You don't mean ... pen in the margin?!
[Lazarus gives a look of disbelief, but the librarian continues]
LIBRARIAN: Well, monitor, I suggest you read this final page and then return the book to the Biography section.
[she hands the book back and disappears, so Lazarus reads the final page]
LAZARUS: [reading] "How stupid I have been, so blind to the events around me, thinking I could separate my two worlds. From the beginning then. I returned from my latest journey to find my centre of operations compromised. My machines in a state of dis-repair. This was only the beginning. Kate's body gone, and if it could not get any worse, when I emerged into the school itself I found a scene of death and destruction, far in excess of what has gone before. Ten schoolkids dead in the wreckage, police crawling through the area, how can I explain to them what has happened, they will think I'm mad. My only chance is to try and build a gate, and go after the murderers myself. I have sealed off the area until I return."
[Lazarus heads for the stacks on the second floor and places it in the correct area, causing him to teleport back to the old castle, where he finds The Black Hawk standing over an injured Professor Richmond]
HAWKSMOOR: I wonder ... can they see me now? Standing victorious in this very room.
RICHMOND: Aah ... urgh ...
HAWKSMOOR: Is it as painful as you feared professor? You ran away to hide, didn't you? Pure fear ... but then you chose not to remain hidden.
[Professor Richmond tries crawling away, but The Black Hawk grabs him]
HAWKSMOOR: You had to search, to "hunt", to challenge things beyond your simplistic comprehension ... and that way, I found you.
RICHMOND: I was never looking for you ... You were nothing!
HAWKSMOOR: You should have respected your fear, Professor. Known your limits.
RICHMOND: Why ... why murder so many innocents?
HAWKSMOOR: Huh ... They won't stay innocent. All my pretty ones had no love for me, nothing but contempt, on the other side of death.
[he kicks Richmond]
RICHMOND: You killed ten students ... who had nothing to do with this.
HAWKSMOOR: Was ten a little excessive? Would one have been enough? Or four? Six? After all, I had to snare you ... How else could I kill you?
[he reaches down and grabs him by the throat]
HAWKSMOOR: And then eat your soul!
[Professor Richmond reaches into his jacket and pulls out a ghost grenade]
RICHMOND: Eat this!
[he shoves it into The Black Hawk's chest, which causes him to explode]
HAWKSMOOR: Ahh!
[Lazarus checks his notebook (which now includes the line "Richmond is innocent!", then is suddenly transported back to the library ... so, he heads back to the front desk, where the librarian is waiting for him]
LIBRARIAN: And now, monitor, it is time for us to go.
[she points towards the hallway leading to the school auditorium and disappears, so Lazarus enters and finds The Black Hawk standing over an unconscious Anna, as if acting out a scene from a play]
HAWKSMOOR: "So foul and fair a day I have not seen ... "
[he looks up and sees that Lazarus has entered]
HAWKSMOOR: Ah ... an audience at last.
[Lazarus runs up to the stage]
HAWKSMOOR: "Me thought I heard a voice cry, 'Sleep no more. Macbeth doth murder sleep.'"
[Lazarus points his gun at him]
HAWKSMOOR: "Is this a dagger I see before me?"
LAZARUS: No, it's a Glock 17 ... police issue!
HAWKSMOOR: [feigns panic] "Thou canst not say I did it! Never shake thy gory locks at me!"
LAZARUS: Take your tights off, Worm Boy, you've lost your audience ... unless you hadn't noticed.
[Lazarus points towards the empty seats in the auditorium]
HAWKSMOOR: Caviar to pigs, I'm feeding! I shall succumb to the spirit of Barnum and Bailey ... give 'em what they want to see!
[Lazarus looks over at his unconscious partner]
LAZARUS: Steele! Steele!
HAWKSMOOR: She cannot hear you, cretin ... Well well, have you enjoyed yourself, chasing up and down, firing popguns at my little troupe of pets?
LAZARUS: Cut the crap, Hawkface! I don't care how many times you've died on your ass before, I'm taking you down!
HAWKSMOOR: You intend to arrest ... a ghost?
LAZARUS: Whatever, I know what you did in this school two years ago, and all of that's real!

From wikipedia.org:

Ghosthunter is a video game based on ghost hunting developed by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. The game was released on the PlayStation 2 in Europe on December 5, 2003, North America on August 17, 2004.

Ghosthunter follows the adventures of Detroit police Officer Lazarus Jones (voice by Rob Paulsen) on his first day on the job. He is sent with his partner, Anna Steele, on a routine call to investigate a disturbance in the abandoned Montsaye High School (which also was the scene of an unsolved massacre). After the two split up to investigate the building, Jones discovers a paranormal research laboratory along with a digitized version of its creator, Professor Peter Richmond (voiced by Joe Morton). As Jones investigates the laboratory, he inadvertently releases the ghosts contained within it, including an evil ghost named Lord William Hawksmoor (voiced by Sir Michael Gambon).

Anna is subsequently kidnapped by Hawksmoor and Jones, aided by the digital Richmond, is sent to recapture the escaped ghosts and rescue his partner. Lazarus' secondary quest is to find Professor Brooke, the reason behind Lazarus and Anna's visit to the school, and to question him about the massacre that happened two years ago. Lazarus is told early in the game that Professor Brooke is actually Professor Richmond, who was actually a Ghosthunter, searching for Kate Heller's / Astral's body in order for her to regain her true form.

Early in his adventure, Jones meets and bonds with the ghost of a woman named Kate Heller (Astral). Astral supports Jones by granting him the ability to see dead people as well as use her other abilities to help him on his quest to rescue Anna Steele and stop Hawksmoor in his quest to regain a living body. Professor Richmond gives Lazarus new equipment suitable for ghost hunting, including a rifle, which uses ghost energy, and a special grenade, which captures weakened ghosts.

Case Study No. 0209: Romney Wordsworth

From wikipedia.org:

In a future totalitarian state, Romney Wordsworth (Burgess Meredith) is a man put on trial for the crime of being "obsolete". His occupation as a librarian is a crime punishable by death, as the State has eliminated literacy. He also believes in God, also punishable by death, as the State has declared that there is no God. He is prosecuted by the Chancellor (Fritz Weaver), who announces in front of the assembled court that Wordsworth, in not being an asset to the State, shall be liquidated.

After being convicted, Wordsworth is allowed to choose his method of execution. He cryptically requests that he be granted a personal assassin to whom he may privately disclose his preferred method of execution. He also requests that his execution be televised. Both requests are granted by the court.

A camera is installed in Wordsworth's study to broadcast his final hours and execution live to the nation. He summons the Chancellor, who shows up at exactly 11:16 p.m. After some discussion, Wordsworth reveals to the unsuspecting Chancellor that he has locked the door, and that his chosen method of execution is by an explosive hidden in the room that is set to go off at midnight. He intends to show the nation how a spiritual man faces death, and proceeds to read Psalm 23 and the beginning of Psalm 53, among others, from his illegal copy of the Bible. He also points out that, as the events are being broadcast live, the State will risk losing its status in the eyes of the people by trying to rescue the Chancellor. As the time draws to a close, Wordsworth's calm acceptance of death stands in sharp contrast with the Chancellor's increasing panic.

Moments before the bomb explodes, the Chancellor, in a desperate plea, finally begs the old man to let him go, "in the name of God." Wordsworth remarks that "in the name of God" he will let him out, and immediately releases the Chancellor.

The Chancellor bursts out of the room and down the stairs just as the bomb explodes and kills Wordsworth.

In the final scene, he returns to the courtroom to discover that a new Chancellor has been appointed to replace him and he is accused of obsolescence: "You are a coward; the state has no use for a coward!" Immediately convicted, the crowd in the courtroom physically assaults him and carries him off.

In his closing narrative, Rod Serling says the Chancellor was wrong about one thing: any state capable of judging its own citizens obsolete is itself obsolete.

"Twilight Zone" (Season 2, Episode 29) - "Obsolete"

The Obsolete Man
Written by Rod Serling

ACT ONE

Setting: A large board with a long table and humongous podium. On the side of the room are many government officials robotically and sequentially next to each other. At each end of the table is a microphone with one end having seat with a State secretary. Above the secretary, is a podium with the State Chancellor Standing at top with a grip of files and his own microphone as well.

Secretary: Wordsworth, Romney, Obsolescence. (Turning to Chancellor) He's waiting, Chancellor.

Chancellor: Order him in.

Secretary: Wordsworth, Romney, Obsolescence.

(A feeble man walks through two large doors. Behind him are other people awaiting their fate in a waiting room. As the two doors close, he is led by a guard to his microphone. His eyes have a look of confusion, awe, and fear as he looks around the word. The Narrator's voice comes over the scene.)

The Narrator:You walk into this room at your own risk, because it leads to the future; not a future that will be, but one that might be. (Camera pans to Narrator)This is not a new world: It is simply an extension of what began in the old one. It has patterned itself after every dictator who has ever planted the ripping imprint of a boot on the pages of history since the beginning of time. It has refinements, technological advancements, and a more sophisticated approach to the destruction of human freedom. But like every one of the super states that preceded it, it has one iron rule: Logic is an enemy, and truth is a menace.(Camera switches to the convicted man) This is Mr. Romney Wordsworth, in his last forty-eight hours on Earth. He's a citizen of the State, but will soon have to be eliminated, because he's built out of flesh and because he has a mind. Mr. Romney Wordsworth, who will draw his last breaths in the Twilight Zone.

Chancellor:Wordsworth, Romney, Field Investigation Finding Obsolescence. Do you know why you're here Mr.Wordsworth?

Wordsworth: Yes sir...

Chancellor: I'd ask you to speak up a little if you will, Mr.Wordsworth.

Wordsworth: Yes, sir, I know why I'm here....

Chancellor: You've been under investigation, Mr.Wordsworth for the mandatory period of 1 year and 11 months, you are found to be obsolete. The purpose of this hearing to make a finding in the matter and make a sentence accordingly. Do you understand that?

Wordsworth: I understand that.

Chancellor: Your occupation Mr.Wordsworth?

Wordsworth: A librarian, sir....

(Crowd jeers confusingly)

Chancellor: (Puzzled and angrily).....A what!?

Wordsworth: A librarian, sir...

Chancellor: (To Secretary) Has this man had counsel?

Secretary: Yes,sir, he has.

Chancellor: Has he been given orientation?

Secretary:Yes, sir.

(As this goes on, Wordsworth steps back into the darkness, as if knowing his fate)

Chancellor: Mr.Wordsworth, I've been told you've been given couns(notices he's out of the light)...STEP BACK INTO THE LIGHT, MR.WORDSWORTH!

(Wordsworth steps back into the light)

Chancellor: I'm told you've been given Counsel,Mr. Wordsworth. but I'm still not sure, in my own mind, you understand the nature of this hearing. The field investigators in your sector have classified you as obsolete, this finding carries with it serious implications. Do you understand that, Mr.Wordsworth?

(Wordsworth nods)

Chancellor:I'd ask you again, your occupation Mr.Wordsworth?

Wordsworth: I AM a librarian, that IS my occupation, that is my PROFESSION. If you people choose to call that obsolete...

Secretary: Request clarification of the term...

Chancellor: Yes...Mr.Wordsworth, the term "You people," you make reference to The State?

Wordsworth: I make reference to The State.

Chancellor: And you persist in declaring your occupation as being that of a librarian. Is that correct?

Wordsworth: Yes, sir, that's correct.

Chancellor: A librarian. Having to do...with books.

Wordsworth:(Proudly) Yes sir...books!

Chancellor: Since there are no more books, Mr.Wordsworth, there are no more libraries, and ,of course, as it follows , there is very little call for the services of a librarian. Case in point: A minister. A minister would tell us that his function is that of preaching the word of God. And since it follows that since The State has proven that there is no God, that would make the function of a minister quite academic as well....

Wordsworth: There IS a God!!

(Crowd jeers in shock. The chancellor looks angry)

Chancellor: You are in error, Wordsworth. There is NO GOD! (To the crowd) The STATE HAS PROVEN THAT THERE IS NO GOD!!

Wordworth: You cannot erase God, with an edict!

(Crowd is even more in shock at Wordsworth)

Chancellor:You are obsolete, Mr.Wordsworth!

Wordsworth: A lie, no man is obsolete!

Chancellor: You have no function, Mr.Wordsworth. You're an anachronism, like a ghost from another time....

Wordsworth: I am nothing more than a reminder to you that you cannot destroy truth by burning pages!

Chancellor: You're a bug,Mr.Wordsworth. A crawling insect. An ugly, misformed, little creature, that has no purpose here, no meaning!

Wordsworth: I am a human being...

Chancellor: You're a librarian, Mr.Wordsworth. You're a dealer in books and two-cent finds and pamphlets and closed stacks and the musty insides of a language factory that spews out meaningless words on an assembly line. WORDS, Mr.WORDSworth. That have no substance, no dimension, like air, like the wind. Like a vacuum, that you make believe have an existence, by scribbling index numbers on little cards.

Wordsworth: I don't care. I tell you: I don't care. I'm a human being, I exist....and if I speak one thought aloud, that thought lives, even after I'm shoveled into my grave.

Chancellor: Delusions, Mr.Wordsworth, DELUSIONS!! That you inject into your veins with printer's ink, the narcotics you call literature: The Bible, poetry, essays, all kinds, all of it are opiate to make you think you have a strength, when you have no strength at all!!! You are nothing, but spindly limbs and a dream, and The State has no use for your kind!!!! (Calming down) You waste our time, Mr.Wordsworth, and you're not worth the waste. Instruct him!

Secretary: Romney Wordsworth, step back to await the finding of this board...

Wordsworth: Yes, sir...

(Wordsworth steps out of the light once again.Three state officials walk forward)

Chancellor: Ladies and Gentlemen, how do you find?

Official 1:Obsolete.

Official 2:Obsolete.

Official 3:Obsolete.

Secretary:Obsolete.

Chancellor:I concur...

Secretary: Romney Wordsworth, Step forward.

(Wordsworth steps forward)

Secretary: The board finds you obsolete.

Chancellor: Your rights are as followed, Mr.Wordsworth, you are to be liquidated within a period of 48 hours, but you have a option as to method and precise time. There are several prescribed methods, Mr.Wordsworth: pills, gas, electrocution...and it can be done immediately, or an hour from now, or any specific time you request.

Wordsworth: (Pauses and smiles with glee and inspiration) I am a very rich man...

Secretary: Louder!

Wordsworth: Oh, I merely said that I am a very rich man, I have such a luxury of choices.....that I choose the following: to be given an assassin to whom I shall tell the method of my execution...

Secretary: (To Chancellor) This is unheard of!

Chancellor: Mr.Wordsworth,we don't understand the nature of the request...

Wordsworth: Simply, that you are to assign me my assassin, but only he and I are to know the way that I am to die.

Chancellor: That would be acceptable Mr. Wordsworth, provided that you are eliminated within the 48 hour period.

Wordsworth: Oh, yes...and one final request... I should like to die...with an audience.

Chancellor: Ahhh, Mr.Wordsworth(looking gleefully) that can be arranged indeed. It is not unusual that we televise executions, it has an educative effect on the population.

Wordsworth: I have no doubt...

Chancellor: Now as to the time of the liquidation, Mr.Wordsworth?

Wordsworth: Midnight.

Chancellor: And the place?

Wordsworth: In my room...

Chancellor: Agreed, Mr.Wordsworth. We will choose your liquidator and send him over to you. He will be duty bound not to divulge the method you have decided upon. That will be all Mr.Wordsworth. You may leave and return to your room.

(The Doors open back up as Wordsworth walks out.)

Secretary: *whisper* An odd one and with very bizarre requests...

Chancellor: Bizarre, yes, but to our advantage. We will show the people how this...obsolete man...this librarian...dies...

The Flenniken Public Library
In collaboration with
The University of Pittsburgh Library and Information Program Marketing Class
Present
The Case of the Missing Catalog Cards

[scene opens with an elderly couple entering the Flenniken Public Library and speaking with the elderly female librarian at the front desk]
DONNA: Hi.
LIBRARIAN: Hi! May I help you with something?
PAUL: No, we can find what we need. We've been here before.
LIBRARIAN: Okay, well, just let me know if there's anything I can do to help you.
DONNA: Thank you, we will ...
[cut to Donna and Paul talking in another part of the library]
DONNA: Paul, you should have let her help us.
PAUL: No, we don't need her bothering us. As a kid, I learned how to use the card catalog. I can find that book on mystery you're looking for.
DONNA: I hope so, because I need it for book club.
PAUL: I can't understand the way you ladies choose your books ... Murders! who would wanna read a book on murders? Especially a book where a cat is the murderer!
[cut to a shot of Paul sitting by himself in the library, writing something down]
PAUL: [in voice over] There are more important things to do ... For instance, writing letters to the editor.
[cut back to Donna and Paul]
DONNA: Well, Lilian Jackson Braun is very popular. And the cat is not the murderer, the cat helps solve the murder. And the book club is for men and women. So, how are you gonna help me find this book?
[cut to Donna and Paul walking towards another part of the library, then stopping at an empty space]
PAUL: Hey, the last time we were here, there were drawers here with cards in 'em!
DONNA: Well, they're not there now. Maybe we should ask someone.
PAUL: No, we can find them by ourselves ... I'm sure there must be cards here somewhere. Somebody must've put 'em somewhere.
DONNA: Well, I'm gonna ask that group of people over there, because they seem to have been here before, and maybe they'll know.
[cut to Donna and Paul walking up to three elderly women huddled around a book cart]
SHIRLEY: [picks up a book] Wow, look Kathi ... Isn't this the book you wanted at Wal-Mart? You can get it here.
KATHI: [takes the book] Oh great, I've been wanting to read this.
DONNA: Do any of you people know what happened to the cards in the card catalog?
SHIRLEY: I'm not sure. What cards are you talking about?
DONNA: Well, they used to be in those drawers over there, but now there's books.
SHIRLEY: Sorry, I've never been over there before. I just stay around the new book cart ... I've read everything in that section already.
KATHI: Maybe the librarian would know.
[cut to the front desk, where the librarian is speaking with the female janitor]
DONNA: [in voice over] She really looks busy, I don't think we should bother her now.
[cut back to Donna and Paul]
PAUL: Besides, I don't think she wants us to find anything ... If we find the books on our own, she won't have anything to do. I think she took the cards for job security!
KATHI: Oh, that's ridiculous ... She helped me get a book the library didn't even have during their library fair. That's why I'm here, to pick it up.
PAUL: [rudely] We're still not asking her.
[cut back to the librarian and janitor at the front desk]
SHIRLEY: [in voice over] Well then, maybe you should ask the janitor. She might know something ... She works here, after all.
[cut back to Donna and Paul]
PAUL: She looks suspicious ... I think she took the cards! That way, she won't have to clean 'em!
SHIRLEY: No, of course not! She's really nice. Just go and ask her ... She can probably help you if you're still afraid of the librarian!
PAUL: First of all, I'm not scared of the librarian ... Secondly, if the janitor took them, she'll never admit it. We can find the cards by ourselves, and use them to find the book we need. It'll be just like those mysteries you're always reading. It'll be like Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Missing Card Catalog Cards!
DONNA: Whatever you say, honey ...
[the camera pans around to show the childrens' section of the library]
DONNA: [in voice over] We can either spy on the librarian from the kids' room ...
[the camera pans around the stacks area]
DONNA: [in voice over] Or the janitor from the stacks.
[cut back to the women standing around the book cart]
SHIRLEY: Oh, for pete's sake! Why don't the two of you just go to the drugstore and buy the book? It'll probably be easier, especially on everybody else!
PAUL: I think it would be better if we stayed in the library ... Should we go look for the cards in the kids' room, or in the stacks?
[cut to a cloesup of a stuffed dragon toy on top of one of the bookshelves]
[the player selects "Visit the children's room (and spy on the librarian)", then cut to Donna and Paul hiding in the room while peering over at the front desk]
PAUL: Look at her ... I know she did something with those cards! She had such a smug smile on her face, when she offered to help us.
DONNA: Paul, will you quit looking at the librarian? We've gotta find the cards, and only Watson ... I'm sorry, Holmes, make sure the man's first. Holmes and Watson can find them.
[she holds up a finger]
DONNA: The game is afoot!
PAUL: Patience, patience! All shall be revealed ...
[cut to Donna looking at one of the books in the childrens' section]
DONNA: Gee, I didn't know they had so many neat books here! I'm gonna have to bring Hunter, my nephew, the next time I babysit ...
[Paul picks up a book]
PAUL: Gee, they even have a book on Tarzan! That was my favorite book when I was a kid ...
[he starts reading, but then stops and looks over at the librarian]
[cut to Donna speaking with a young boy and his mother]
DONNA: I didn't know you had puppets. Do you guys come here often?
BOY: Yeah, we come here all the time.
MOTHER: Are you looking for something? We can help. We know all about this library.
BOY: Yeah, I come here for tutoring and summer reading programs.
PAUL: That's okay, you guys wouldn't understand our needs.
MOTHER: Why don't you just ask the librarian? She's really helpful.
DONNA: No, I'm sorry ... We can't do that because she's our "suspect."
[Paul angrily walks up to Donna]
PAUL: [whispers] Don't tell them anything, they might alert her!
[cut to Paul standing away from the others]
PAUL: I'm gonna go look over there ...
[he walks over to a table and picks up the dragon puppet]
PAUL: Hey, you forgot this puppet ...
[he notices some catalog cards stuffed into the puppet]
PAUL: There's some cards in here!
[cut to Donna and Paul looking at the cards]
DONNA: Well Sherlock, how did they get in there?
PAUL: I don't know, but that's all there is ... It must've been the librarian!
DONNA: Does that mean we're letting the janitor off the hook, Holmes?
PAUL: No, not yet ... I saw her conspiring with the janitor.
DONNA: Well, they were probably just discussing what to clean next.
[the janitor suddenly walks in and takes the puppet]
JANITOR: I wondered where that was!
[she leaves]
DONNA: So we're not ready to let anybody off the hook yet, eh Sherlock?
PAUL: Not until they've been able to prove their innocence! Besides, I thought you liked this mystery stuff.
[he reaches down and opens a book on a nearby shelf]
PAUL: Hey, what is this? Maybe the cards are in here!
[cut to the young boy sitting at a nearby table]
BOY: That's the book with the computer games in it! If you memorize the number on the green sticker, you can tell the librarian that number. You can even take out two at a time!
[cut back to Donna and Paul]
PAUL: Well, I won't do that right now ...
[he turns and looks towards the front desk]
PAUL: The librarian is talking to the janitor!
[cut to the librarian and janitor at the front desk]
PAUL: [in voice over] See? They're conspiring with each other! They both did it!
DONNA: Okay, honey ... Why don't we go see if we can find what "they" did with the cards? We can check out the room next door.
PAUL: No, we should go look at the adult room. The janitor is in there, I saw her!
[the player selects "Visit the adult room (and spy on the librarian)", then cut to Donna and Paul standing in the adult stacks section]
PAUL: Okay, so where do you think they would've hidden the cards?
DONNA: Ah, so it's "they" now, is it?
PAUL: If it was the janitor, she probably had an accomplice. So what did they do with the cards?
DONNA: Maybe they fell behind the books. Maybe we should look on the shelves. Wadda you think, Sherlock?
[Paul pulls a book from the shelf, and a bunch of cards fall out as he opens it]
[cut to Paul and Donna sitting at a table with a pile of books on it]
DONNA: I don't get it, we only found six cards in all of these books.
PAUL: My dear Watson, that's why I told you we should be investigating the library workers. They know where the cards are, because one of them is a thief!
DONNA: Yes, dear ...
[the janitor walks by, notices the messy pile of books on the table, shakes her head at the couple and leave]
PAUL: [whispers] See? She was hoping to be alone, so she could hide more cards!
DONNA: I don't think there's anymore cards to hide. I think we're on the wrong track. Why don't we just go grab a sandwich?
PAUL: How can you be thinking about your stomach at a time like this? I think we should follow the janitor. She's out by the computers ... Or maybe we should follow the librarian? She went to the Blue Room. Wadda you think?
DONNA: Hmm, interesting.
[cut to another closeup of the dragon puppet on the table]
[the player selects "Visit the Blue Room (and spy on the librarian)", then cut to Donna and Paul checking out the DVD rack in the multimedia room]
DONNA: Look at the DVDs ... I've been wanting to see "The Devil Wears Prada," I wonder if they have it?
PAUL: Watson, what're you doing? I'm trying to spy on the librarian and see what she did with the cards. Why don't you stop looking through those DVDs, and help me ...
DONNA: But they have CDs too!
[Paul leans in and gives her a stern look]
DONNA: Alright, let's sneak in there when she's not looking ... Ready, set, now.
[they head into the Blue Room and try to spy on the librarian from behind the stacks, but she notices their poor attempt at "hiding"]
LIBRARIAN: Hi, can I help you with anything?
DONNA: Could you help us--
[Paul quickly reaches over and covers her mouth]
PAUL: No, that's alright. We don't need any help. We can find what we need.
LIBRARIAN: Well, just let me know if you change your mind.
[she walks away, as Paul takes his hand away]
PAUL: We sure will ...
DONNA: [angrily] Why did you do that? She could've helped us find the cards from the card catalog, and I could've gotten my book!
PAUL: She is still a suspect ... You want to find what happened to the card catalog, don't you? We are Watson and Holmes, remember?
DONNA: [sighs] I guess ... Hey, look. What's that on the table?
[they walk over to a computer terminal, and Donna picks up another card]
DONNA: It's more cards, but it's got some kind of writing on it.
[Paul takes the card from her and stares at it intently]
PAUL: It looks like some kind of weird librarian lingo!
[cut to a closeup of the old-time catalog cards (with handwritten notes that read "J743 Gsto J394.2 Dis"), then back to Donna and Paul]
PAUL: I told you she was guilty, and this is the proof!
DONNA: Well, it's proof of something, alright. But I think we need to go talk to the librarian ...

Who stole the cards?
The dragon
The librarian
The janitor

[the player selects "The Librarian", then cut to Donna and Paul confronting the librarian at the front desk]
PAUL: We know who stole the cards from the catalog ... It was you! Everyone thinks you're so nice and helpful, but all the while you're just preventing people from finding what they need, and you're just protecting your job!
DONNA: I don't think it quite works that way, Paul ...
LIBRARIAN: That's right, I have more than enough work without having to hide the card catalog. My main job is helping people find the resources that they need.
PAUL: Well then, where are the catalogs?
LIBRARIAN: Well, we automated our catalogs, so we no longer have paper cards, we have electronic ones ... Here, let me show you how it works.
[Paul and the librarian walk over to a computer]
LIBRARIAN: Okay, this is how we search for things like title, author, subject, or keyword. Keyword is a way it will search if you don't specify one of the other areas.
[cut to a closeup of the Flenniken online catalog]
LIBRARIAN: [in voice over] I believe I heard you and your wife talking about the "Cat Who ... " novel by Lilian Jackson Braun?
PAUL: [in voice over] Yes.
LIBRARIAN: [in voice over] Well, if you wanted to look and see any book we have with the author last name of "Braun," we can type that in here, and click "Author," and hit "Search." And this will come up with all of the author fields that have "Braun" in them. Most of them, you'll see, have "Lilian Jackson Braun." If we scroll down, there are lots and lots with her name. But there are also a few that don't list "Braun" anywhere. But, if we click on that title, that will show us the entire record. And, this has "Daniel Brauning" as one of the authors.
[she pulls up a record for "The Birds of Pennsylvania" by Gerald M. McWilliams and Daniel W. Brauning]
LIBRARIAN: [in voice over] So, the search engine in the catalog picked up the B-R-A-U-N. So, if we go back to our original list, if you wanted to just find out which books we have by Lilian Jackson Braun, if we go back and redo our search by putting "Lilian" in there as well ...
[a new list of entries comes up]
LIBRARIAN: [in voice over] And now, all of the books that are on the list have Lilian Jackson Braun. Most of them are the "Cat Who ... " books. And it will tell you on the right side whether the book is checked out or not. If it says "In," then it's on the shelf. If it has a red "Out," then someone's checked it out. That way you know, before you go to look on the shelf, if the book you are looking for should be there. Another way you can search is by the "Advanced Search." This way, we have the author Lilian Jackson Braun, and if we only want the books that start with "The Cat Who," we can put the beginning of the title in here and tell it to look for "Title," and we are also going to search by copy type, because I like to know if there are some books on audiocassette or audio CD by Lilian Jackson Braun. So I'm gonna select "AC" which means "audiocassette," and because they have the little cassette icon on them, it tells me that those are audiobooks, if I want some to take and listen to in my car.
[cut back to the librarian talking to Paul]
LIBRARIAN: So that's the basics of the catalog. I hope that you'll use it a lot, and as you'll get more comfortable with it, you'll find out some of the other features and keep using the library!
PAUL: Well, thank you very much.
LIBRARIAN: You're very welcome!
[they shake hands]
